Seoul home. This morning's extras report that armed collision between the Japanese troops and the Chinese soldiers began soon after the noon yesterday in San Hai Kwan(山海關) and that the Japanese troops occupied the city or fortress of San-Hai-Kwan about 8:30 last night.

Seoul home. At 6 p.m. went to the official residence of the Govn. Genl. where a crowd of notables, Korean and Japanese, were invited to a New Year Banquet. This is the first time I have ever been invited to this kind of official feast and I am puzzled to know why I was invited. I went because while my presence wouldn't be noticed my absence would be duly noted. The banquet was very simple as it should be considering the fact an elaborate feast would be unbecoming to a Japanese dignitary when the whole Japanese nation is straining every nerve in a gigantic struggle against the whole world.

Left Seoul with 珽善 by the 8:40 a.m. train for On Yang Hot Springs. The little fellow seemed to enjoy the ride. Arriving at the Springs about 11:30 went into bath hall after a light refreshment. Happy to see 璋, 琦, 寶 in the hall enjoying themselves.

Seoul home. Had 明善 and his wife take lunch with us. Went to the station to see them leave Seoul for Shinkyong of Manchuria by the 7:20 p.m. express. God be with the young couple in that land of great possibilities for good as well as for evil.

Left Seoul 9:05 a.m. train for Song Do. Returned by the 4:08 p.m. slow train-which took 4 hours to reach Seoul. The crowd in the car, both young and old, Japanese and Koreans, smoked and smoked as if their dear lives were dependent on smoking.

The Kye Myong Club(啓明俱樂部) celebrated its 15th birthday with an elaborate program from 5 to 10 p.m. Its main feature was the speeches by four of the leaders of Club on (1) the objectives of the club; (2) the observance of the new year day according the solar or official calendar instead of the old or lunar calendar; (3) the use of honorifics in speaking to our children; (4) the benefit of wearing dark-colored dress. All very good; but I don't agree with Mr. 朴勝彬 in his contention that use of low talk to our children is source of our racial evils.

Seoul home. Three divisions(師團) of the Japanese troops are scheduled to pass through the Seoul Station between Feb. 1st and 6th on their way to Manchuria. The exact number of soldiers is unknown. A Shina-Japanese war, without any formal declaration, seems to be imminent on a big scale. Whether this will usher in a world war or not will depend on what America or Russia or both may do.
