‘제5회 아시아-태평양지역 수중문화유산 학술회의’ 개최(11.13.~18./국립아시아문화전당)
문화재청 국립해양문화재연구소(소장 김성배)는 오는 11월 13일(월)부터 18일(토)까지 6일간 국립아시아문화전당(광주광역시)에서 APCONF 사무국과 공동으로 「제5회 아시아-태평양지역 수중문화유산 학술회의(컨퍼런스)(Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Underwater Cultural Heritage, APCONF)」를 개최하기로 하고, 14일 오전 10시 20분에 개막식을 개최한다.
이번 행사는 3년 주기로 아시아-태평양지역 수중문화유산 연구자들이 모여 연구 성과를 공유하고 현안을 논의하는 대표적인 국제 학술회의로, 국내에서는 처음으로 개최된다. 지난 40여 년간 우리나라 수중문화유산 조사·연구를 전담해온 전문기관이자 아시아 대표 수중고고학 기관인 국립해양문화재연구소가 그간 축적한 조사·연구 역량과 성과를 알리고, 아시아-태평양 지역 전문가들 간 교류의 장을 마련하는 자리이다.
35개국에서 250여 명의 수중문화유산 연구자들이 참석하는 이번 학술 회의(컨퍼런스)에서는 유엔에서 제시한 ‘지속 가능한 발전을 위한 해양 과학의 10개년 계획’을 의제로 6개 주제 아래 26개 분과(세션)에서 178건의 발표가 진행된다.
아태지역 수중문화유산 조사의 역사와 최근 조사 연구 성과를 공유하고, ▲ 수중문화유산 훼손의 주요 요인과 보존방안, ▲ 침수된 수중유적에 대한 사례와 조사방법, ▲ 유네스코 수중문화유산 협약과 각국에서 제정한 관련 법안 소개와 안전한 수중문화유산의 관리 방안, ▲ 첨단 기술을 활용한 수중문화유산 조사 방법과 자료관리, ▲ 수중문화유산의 효과적인 전시와 홍보 방법 등에 대한 주제 아래 발표가 예정되어 있다.
이외에도 각국의 수중문화유산 전문가들이 참여하는 기조강연과 원탁회의(라운드테이블), 자료 발표(포스터 발표) 등을 통해 다양한 수중문화유산 현안에 대해 함께 논의하고, 국립해양문화재연구소와 국립광주박물관 답사를 통해 국내의 수중문화유산 연구 현황을 소개하는 시간도 마련된다.

문화재청 국립해양문화재연구소는 이번 행사를 계기로 우리나라 수중고고학의 성과와 역량을 세계에 널리 알리고, 적극적인 교류 협력을 통해 아시아를 넘어 세계적인 수중문화유산 전문기관으로 도약할 계획이다.
The National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage, Cultural Heritage Administration (Director General, Kim Seongbae) will hold “The Fifth Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Maritime Cultural Heritage (APCONF)” at Asia Cultural Center (Gwangju) for six days, from 13th (Monday) to 18th (Saturday) of November, in cooperation with the organizing committee of APCONF, opening ceremony of which is planned at 10:20 on 14th.
The conference where underwater archaeologists from Asia-Pacific regions share their research results and discuss current issues is held in Korea for the first time. As the institute of being charge of domestic survey and research on underwater cultural heritage for almost 40 years and representative institute for underwater cultural heritage in Asia, the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage will introduce established capability and results of survey and research and give a networking place to the researchers from Asia-Pacific regions.
Under the title of ‘United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development’, this conference will have 178 presentations under 26 sessions of six major themes, with around 250 underwater archaeologists from 35 countries.
In order to share history of research on underwater cultural heritage and share its recent results, the presentations are planned under the major themes as follows: 1) major threats of underwater cultural heritage and its preservation methods, 2) cases of submerged underwater sites and methodology, 3) UNESCO convention on underwater cultural heritage, introduction of legislation of each country, and management methods of underwater cultural heritage 4) methodology and management of materials on underwater cultural heritage by recent technology, 5) effective ways of display and promotion of underwater cultural heritage.
In addition, current issues on various underwater cultural heritage will be discussed through keynote talks and roundtable with underwater archaeologists from the world, and poster presentations, as well as research status of domestic underwater cultural heritage will be introduced through field trip to the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage and Gwangju National Museum.
The conference will be in English, and anyone is welcomed by on-site registration. In addition, the conference will be streamed on Youtube channel of the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage. With this opportunity, the National Research Institute of Maritime Cultural Heritage is expected to spread its results and capability on underwater cultural heritage to the world, and become a world-class institute, not only limited to Asia, with dynamic networking activities and cooperation.
