1. Intro

On March 28, 2018, Mr. Raymond Leduc (Vice President, Business Development of Volvo Group (Nova Bus and Prevost Divisions) and Dr. Pascal Bécotte paid a visit to Dalhousie University to share their career experience and thoughts on an organization’s strategy and leadership. The summit was conducted in a very interesting form. For one hour, two speakers asked each other questions and responded on those questions. It was an hour and a half conference, however, students were eager to ask many questions which resulted in another one hour of Q&A with students.

2. Mr. Raymond Leduc

Raymond Leduc joined the Volvo Group, Nova Bus and Prevost Divisions on February 1, 2016. Presently, he is responsible for new business development, with a focus on emerging technologies. Prior to joining Volvo Group, Raymond was President, Bell Helicopter Textron Canada, responsible for the development, assembly, and certification of Bell’s commercial helicopter portfolio. He joined Bell in 2012 after a 31 year career with IBM which included leading the IBM Bromont microelectronics operation, product development, and site financial controller.

Key takeaways from Mr. Leduc's speech on importance of an organization’s strategy and leadership

1) “Organization’s biggest strategic challenge isn’t strategic thinking – It is strategic acting”
Mr. Leduc emphasized that despite having exceptional strategic planning, an organization can face severe failure when they cannot execute the plan. Not only did this sentence delivered the lesson to businesses, but as a student I could apply this to the progress of achieving my goals. It is always easier to set the ‘good’ plan than to put my plan into action. Therefore his point of strategic acting was a good lesson in many perspectives. Then, he asked us a question, “What would you choose between two options: 1) brilliant strategy with mediocre execution or 2) average strategy with flawless execution?” Students evenly chose between two options and he responded, “Brilliant strategy with flawless execution would be the best” half in jest. He then continued his speech and said his answer to this question is somewhat close to the second option. “Don’t dither.” said Mr. Leduc. Even you have a brilliant strategy, if you miss the timing, you lose the strategy. Though, your strategy is not perfectly planned enough, execute it when you find the right timing and resources, otherwise the bus will never come back.

2) How to form an organization’s strategy? Listen to your customers
When a company is formulating a strategy, Mr. Leduc considers his customers as number one factor. Then he emphasized two things: 1) connect to your customers and 2) do something that will be bring true value to your customers. The core of strategy formulation should be focused on customers and it also helps that company build long-term relationships with its customers. When you plan and initiate your strategy based on your customers’ needs, it will eventually boost sales and build a lasting business.

3) Leadership – Building relationship with your employees
When talking about the leadership, Mr. Leduc underlined the value of building good relationships with employees. When he joined Bell Helicopter Textron, he spent the first 2 weeks on the shop floor of hi company learning operations of plants and manufacturing process of helicopters. Then he said “earn your stripes by working together instead of sitting.” He explained that he tried to know employees as ‘people’ not as ‘employees’.

4) Bus Manufacturing Industry
Mr. Leduc is the Vice President of Nova Bus and Provost Divisions under Volvo Canada. He interestingly described the bus manufacturing industry as “Designer suits, sold at Walmart that has customers, who have twice as many lawyers as we have.” It was an insightful comparison to explain us about the bus manufacturing industry. Manufacturing bus requires sophisticated technologies and buses need to be produced at a decent quality (which is similar to designer suits), which then will be sold in a highly competitive market (Becoming Walmart’s suppliers is extremely competitive) to customers who have resources to sue bus makers if something go wrong.

3. Dr. Pascal Bécotte

Dr. Pascal Bécotte leads the firm’s global Operations & Supply Chain Officers practice. He is also a key member of Russell Reynolds Associates Healthcare and Industrial sectors, where he advises global clients on their overall talent strategy; particularly with respect to leadership assessment and succession planning.

Dr. Bécotte’s speech was more focused on providing advice to graduating students who will be soon entering into a job market. Since there were many students who are graduating this year, many of them asked Dr. Bécotte useful tips about job searching and hiring processes. Here are summary of Dr. Bécotte’s speech.

Dr. Bécotte's career advice

1) How can I be differentiated from other candidates in my application?
Dr. Bécotte asked us a question. “Have you ever seen any failures on resumes or on LinkedIn profiles?” No one nodded. He then recommended us to mention what we did wrong in the past and how we solved the problem. Admitting what you did wrong while presenting approaches we apply to solve the problems can differentiate you from others. As a lead at the head-hunting company, he listed three criteria that he always considers when he hires someone: 1) Can you do the job, 2) Will you love this job? , and 3) Can we work with you? First question is to examine if a candidate has sufficient skills that the company requires. Second question is to look at candidate’s passion and interest in this company and the position. Third question helps him identify if candidate is a good fit to the employer. When we apply for jobs or have an interview, he suggested us to tailor our resumes to answer those three questions.

2) Job searching tips
He suggested us to make a list of top 10 companies we would love to work for and then research those companies including their organization structure, culture, products, almost everything you can. He encouraged us to connect (commonly through LinkedIn) with the “decision makers” from those companies. Decision makers are people who make final decisions to hire new employees. Students should be cautious on identifying who the decision makers are. It is not always a HR manager. It is more likely someone who you will be reporting to if you are hired. Sending a LinkedIn invitation to grab a lunch or coffee is a great way to know about the company and deliver our passion. Surprisingly, we as a student will have a good shot at getting accepted by those managers. In this way, among hundreds of applications, we can be the unique one who actually took time to know more about the company and people in person.

3) Family Comes First – Always
During the whole summit, Mr. Leduc and Dr. Bécotte couldn’t emphasize enough on importance of putting their family first. At the end of the speech, Dr. Bécotte reminded students, who will be going into workforce soon, to keep in mind that we work because we want to have a happy family. What would be the point of being successful in your career when you cannot succeed in family life? Family should always come first.

4. Overall Thoughts on the Summit

It was such a privilege for me to attend this summit and I found the whole summit very interesting, insightful, and informative. Various materials were covered such as strategy planning and execution, leadership, career tips, and the way both speakers delivered their messages to students was energetic. I wish all the best to Mr. Leduc and Dr. Bécotte for their careers and sincerely appreciated their time and willingness to share their experience.
