His democratic manners made himself pleasant to everybody. Was surprised to see the Princess smoke cigarette. The dinner―which was meaning to me―was as elegant as it was unsubstantial.

She has won the love of the people of Korea as the unselfish pioneer in the education of the blind and dumb and in the training of women physicians. Dr. Esther Kim was the first Korean woman doctor whom Dr. Hall gave to Korea. She is perhaps the only American woman missionary who dared to invite Korean guests to sleep in her home.

Seoul home. A goodly shower between 8 and 9 a.m. This year has been hard on rice crops with every ill that a farmer fears. Drought, flood, windstorms, hail, insects all over the country. This season we must have good weather for harvest. Yet this unceasing and unseasonable visits of unwelcome rain will cause a great deal of damage the crops to be gathered.
