Seoul home. To read what philosophers have said about the eternal mysteries―God, matter, mind, immortality―etc. etc. etc. is an interesting but, at last a tiresome affair. Not two of them agree in anything; not one of them seems to know more than the most ignorant human beast. They―these philosophers―are like those who paint dragons or other fabled animals; they can write books on books on these abstract subjects―all out of their more or less fertile imagination―and who can say they are wrong or right? May put a dozen wings on a dragon―who can say I am not right?

Seoul home. Wrote Dr. Mott thanking him for the book "The X.Y.Z. of Communism" which he sent me. Said: "The story of the Russian Communism is a terrible story―as terrible in its way as the story in The All Quiet in the Western Front. My nerves were shaken for days when I got through with the "Western Front". I fear the X.Y.Z. will give an another never-shock. After all, what is the Russian Communism but the natural sequel of the Great War?"

Seoul home. Our Helen left Seoul once more for America―for no reason whatsoever except that she has found no place to fit in. I wouldn't be surprised if she return to the East six months or a year later at most. If nobody wants her in the East what right has she to expect that anybody would want her in the West? All I can say is "God be good to her!"

Seoul home. Lunch hour at the 百合園. Mr. Paik Sang Kyu happening to speak of Dr. Cynn said: "Your know he is scheming and intriguing always trying to raise himself up at the expense of others." I had known all along that there was no love lost between Paik and Cynn, but I was rather amused to hear, for the first time in my hearing at any rate, Paik voice the consensus of opinion in regard to the leading traits of Cynn's character. Yet I could not help asking in my mind which of the two men was serving the Korean society between the bright minded, chatty and sociable Paik or the dignified strong and domineering Cynn? Undoubtedly Cynn is making himself a leader of no common calibre. In a better fated country than KoreaCynn would have made himself a name as a diplomat. He is painstaking, thoroughgoing and far-seeing in all his plans. Pity; he didn't have more of personal magnetism and less of that aloofness which borders on arrogance.

Seoul home. Took Paik Woon Sang to the Government Hospital to give him the chance of being examined by Dr. Paik, the well-known Korean surgeon. Mr. P.W.S. has a tumor under his right ear which has become a malignant tumor. The doctors of the Severance Hospital told him two months ago that his only chance was operation. After a careful examination, Dr. Paik―tells me that the time for operation has passed, and that in a few months the tumor which has extended far into the abdomen will become so malignant that it will kill the patient. Returning home I had to tell Mr. P.W.S. part of Dr. P's diagnosis and suggested that he, Mr. P.W.S. would at once put his affairs in order and hand over to Allen the work of superintending my plantations; and that he should then return to his Song Do home for complete rest. Mr. P. agreed to do so.

Seoul home. Allen came to Seoul this afternoon. He tells me that Mr. P.W.S. doesn't believe what the surgeons of foreign Medical Schools have told him about his tumor. A Korean doctor of the Chinese medicine a Mr. Wang has assured him that he(Wang) could cure him by first relieving him(P.) of his indigestion and then by driving all the putrefying matter back into the original tumor which then can be cut off. Mr. P.W.S. thinks the Korean doctor is wiser than the foreign surgeons and is going to try the Korean medicine―as prescribed by Dr. Wang. I hope he is right―for it is a fact a Korean doctor has time and again cured diseases which Western doctors have given up as hopeless.

Left Seoul with 明燮 for 溫陽 hot springs per 8:42 a.m. train. Arriving there about 11:30, we put up at 光成旅館 where cousin 致昭 is stopping. After lunch and bath, 明燮 and I went to 舊溫陽邑 to pay our respect to my father's tomb. Returned to spring about 6 p.m.

31. 5월 31일

93

溫陽溫泉. After breakfast left the hot springs by an auto for 新項里 via 舊牙山邑 and 貢稅里. Had to foot it from 南昌 to 新村 about half a mile. Got to our native village a little past 12. Rested until 4 p.m. Then walked to 道谷 to pay my respect to the graves of grandfather and grandmother. Cloudy with a drops of rain. Had to hurry back―very tired and foot sore.
