1st. Thursday. Rain from early morning.

3
Seoul home. The Korean Athletic Association has prepared an elaborate program for Four-day sports of all kinds in celebration of the 15th year of its existance. The games to begin this morning. But the inclement weather and the soaky condition of the ground have compelled the Association to postpone the plays.
4
Fifteen years ago baseball was about the only foreign support which a few Korean young men tried to learn and play. But now almost all the games of olympics are not only known and play'd by the Korean youths. but some of them have become even efficient enough in certain sports to take part in international contests.

2. 11월 2일

6
2nd. Friday. Cloudy a.m. Britht p.m.

7
Seoul home.
8
The athletic meets of various kinds took place on the Seoul Stadium after an appropriate opening ceremony 11 a.m. The weather was cold while the ground was nothing better than a paddy field. The foot ball teams had a hard time of it.
9
I couldn't help notice the conspicuous absence of any sign of appreciation or of encourageent of sports which the Korean youths are trying to learn, on the part of the Japanese authorities―municipal, provincial, or Governmental. If Japanese Athletic Association celebrated its 15 or 20 year's activities, the Japanese, official and private, would have given all the encouragements such a work deserves in words and in money. This indifference―the chilling indifference to the Korean's ambitions and asprirations, even in athletic fields, on the part of our Japanese rulers, tends to deepen the gulf between the two races.

3. 11월 3일

11
3rd. Saturday. Lovely. Bracing cold.

12
Seoul home. The socker teams of the Kye-Sung H.C. School of Tai-Ku and the Pai-Chai boys had a contest. The Pai-Chai team―or rather a few of them―behaved very badly. One of the Tai-Ku boys who knocked down and a Pai-Chai delibrately kicked the fallen boy in the face―a brutal act which shocked everybody.

4. 11월 4일

14
4th. Sunday. Beautiful.

15
9 a.m. went to the Seoul Stadium to see the tract and field games begin. Today being the 91st Anniversary of our Mother's birthday, we invited some of our intimate friends besides the members of our family circles, to a lunch. Mrssrs. 李根雨 and 李丙黙 were only two new guests―the rest being those whom we have been in the habit of inviting on such occasions.
16
The presence of our venerable aunt now 84 years old, was another happy feature.
17
1 p.m. I had to attend the ceremony of unveiling a bronze bust which the faculty and alumni of the First Higher Common School had eracted in honor of Mr. M.S. Oka(岡元輔) , the first Principal of that school. There were the usual congratulatory addresses from the Governor General down Marquis Pak Yung Hyo was the only Korean noble man who figured in the program. I was asked to make an address as a representative of the parents of the students. The whole program was all so cut and dried. Everything was neat and regular but the lack of humor made the proceedings cold as ice.
18
To the athletic ground from 4 to 6.

5. 11월 5일

20
5th. Monday. Bright.

21
Seoul home. The combined field and track meets came to end this afternoon about 5:30. Except the college teams of C.C.C. and of Po-Sung, the Pai-Chai, the Joong-Dong, and Chosun, football teams behaved very disgracefully.

6. 11월 6일

23
6th. Tuesday. Cloudy―Warm―Rain 7―8 p.m.

24
Seoul home. Well, my friend, Mr. Choi Rin has finally stepped out as a leader of a new party, Christened "Si-Joong-Hoi". The association or society or party was officially organized yesterday afternoon in the Chosen Hotel. Its Five Principles or Objectives, are:

25
1. The establishment of a new standard of life(新生活의 建設) .
26
2. The founding of a new philosophy of life(新人生觀의 確立) .
27
3. The coalescence of the Japanese and the Koreans into one family(內鮮一家의 結成) .
28
4. The practice of the sacredness of labor(勞働神聖의 實行) .
29
5. The practice of sincerity, courtesy, and integrity(誠 · 敬 · 信의 實行) .

30
6. p.m. went to the Tai Suh Kwan Restaurant where Dr. Ryang entertained some of his friends―about 14 to a sukiyaki supper. The affair was entirely informal and we all enjoyed the treat. A vigorous shower between 7―8.

7. 11월 7일

32
7th. Wednesday. Cloudy―Windy. Bright and cold.

33
Seoul home. 5 p.m. Mr. Yu Uk Kyum called. He evidently came by the request of Helen Kim. He said, in substance that he didn't approve of her proposal to get me elected the Principal of the Ewha College, but that he strongly hoped that I should consent to be made the Komoon or Advisor. That, he thinks, will help Capt. Swinehart in his next campaign for raising an endowment.

8. 11월 8일

35
8th. Thursday. Bright―Bracing.

36
Seoul home. 1 p.m. there was a Kyong No Hoi or a meeting for reverencing the aged. 301 old people, mostly women, assembled in the auditorium of the Soo Song Primary School. Our mother went there too to see a woman 103 years old! 99 was the next oldest. A box of rice cakes, a towel and a little "mochi" were presented to those above 80. People below that age weren't counted as old! This is one of the means by which the authorities are trying to revive the Confucian ethics to counter act the influence of beastly Bolshevism.
37
Kwang Hyoni(光鉉) told me that Pak Maria insinuated that Helen Kim's effort to make me the Principal of the Ewha College, is a step to supplent Miss Alice Appenzeller. 金永羲 told me that is a mutual distrust and antipathy between Alice and Helen Kim.

9. 11월 9일

39
9th. Friday. Bright. Bracing.

40
Seoul home. To Station 7 a.m. to see our 璋善 going to Song Do and 埼善 to Soo Won for School excursion.
41
4 p.m. went to Mr. Pak Yung Chul's home to attend a meeting of the parents of the boys go to the First H.C. School. The subscription raised for the enlargement of the athletic ground amounted to ¥7,000.00. The principal Mr. Wada, wants a few of us, (朴榮喆, 閔大植, 尹致昭, and myself) to give ¥200.00 more each. That will make my contribution to the School ¥850.00.
42
Helen Kim invited Mr. 兪億兼 and me to a sukiyaki supper at Yedogawa―to ask me to consent to be elected the "Komoon" or Advisor to the Ewha College. I had to tell them bluntly that since a whisper goes round to the effect that Helen Kim wants to put me in the College as a step to ousting Miss Appenzeller. I don't think it wise for me to have any direct connection with the College.

10. 11월 10일

44
10th. Saturday. Bright―Pleasant.

45
Seoul home. 7 a.m. went to the Seoul Shrine Square(神宮廣場) to hear the reading of the Imperial Rescript calling upon the people of Japan to revive and to preserve the ancient ideals of loyalty and filial piety. The square was overflowing with loyal and devout Japanese citizens. Middle Schools all represented.
46
3. p.m went to Yung Do Sa, where the Methodist Preachers' Association have a supper in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Ryang. Forty persons in the party including four missionaries. Returned home about 8.
47
England and America are howling for open door and equal opportunity in Manchuria. These great nations seem to never have heard such a thing as the exclusions bills of America and Canada against the Far-Eastern peoples. The people of Arizona have lately been amusing themselves by brutal attacks with bombs and dynamites on peaceful Japanese farmers. Not a Korean student can stay in the U.S. a day longer after he finishes his school. All this in a land which everlastingly brags about its declaration of Independence. Japan has as much right to monopolize the natural resources and opportunities of and in Manchuria as the Americans are monopolizing these of North America and the English, those of Austronesia and of Canada. In fact Japan can't commit one single international or interracial sin that Christian nations of the West haven't set an example and a precedent.

12th. Monday. Bright a.m. Cloudy p.m.

53
Seoul home. This morning at 9, by appointment, Miss Alice Appenzeller called. In substance she said that last year Helen Kim's mind was unsettled as to which she was to choose for her life work―the Y.W.C.A. or the Ewha College. There was some differences of opnion between her(Alice A.) and Helen on certain questions. But all that has passed away. Now Helen and she are one in purpose, plans and policy concerning the Ewha College. Both she and Helen think it would be the finest thing in the world if I could give them my personal help in the capacity of an advisor. I hnd to tell her frankly that my taking any official position in the College would raise a false expectation in the mind of the Korean public as to my furnishing a substantial contribution toward the endowment fund; and that some busy bodies would be only too glad to invent and circulate insinusations and rumors that Helen Kim is using me to further her ambition.
54
6:30 p.m. went to Myong Wol Kwan to attend a round table conference called by the Dong-A-Il-Po to exchange opinions as to the cause of the ugly unsportman-like conducts of the soccer boys and the means of remedying the same. The consensus of opinion was that the principal cause was the absorbing desire to win. Many mottoes suggested. Mine, 이겨도 正道로 저도 正道로 was adopted. Returned home abnut 9.

60
Seoul home. Cold no better. Stayed in bed.

According to Kim yung Hui, the literary and other departments in the Ewha College are losing students in a manner alarming. The College began the year with 290 girls of whom 70 or more than 1/4 have dropped out. When the College moves out to the new buildings the running expenses will be tripled while the number of students may decrease over more than now. Girls from the country may live in the Dormitory but those from the city will have to walk more than a mile or two through woods to and from the school. Many parents wouldn't care to have their daughters run the risks resulting from such long walks.

15. 11월 15일

63
15th. Thursday. Lovely p.m.

64
Seoul home. This morning Dr. Kim Yung Hui called. I asked him what he thought of Miss A.'s request to me to be actively connected with her College. Kim said that Helen K. does try to boss everything in the school that she uses Yi Kui Bok as a spy to keep her informed with what the teachers say or do; that everybody in the faculty, men and women, love Miss A. but hardly anybody loves Helen K.; that Helen K. treats him pretty much as Cynn treats Hyon; that while Miss A. tries to economize a cent Helen K. is rather too large handed with money; that Miss A. talks with Cynn while Helen K. consults with Yu O.K.; that he, (Kim Y.H.) would advise me to wait and see before consenting to have any direct connection with the Ewha.
65
4 to 10:30 p.m. the celebration, my 70th year Jubilee so called. A long program at the Jung First M. Church lasting over 2 hours. The great crowd of friends behaved all like ladies and gentleman. Then feast at the Myong Wol Kwan. Thank God all is ended well.

16. 11월 16일

67
16th. Friday. Beautiful.

68
Seoul home. Hyon Dong Wan called this morning and said, to my amazement, that Helen Kim gave Dr. Kim such a dressing down for doing outside work(my biography) not connected with the school afairs, that Kim begged his friends not to call on him during his office hours. When Kim Y.H. told Helen Kim that he had a summon from the Bureau of Police on a business connected with my biography, she flew into a rage and said: "What does that matter? Even if you had a summon from the Governor General you had no obligation to go except on school business".
69
When Cynn begged Hyon to withdraw his resignation, he promised that (1) he would have nothing to do with the Juk Kuk Band; (2) and that he would give Hyon free hand in the management of the Industrial Dept. and of the educational matters. But, by putting several of his Band men in the Night School, has silently crowded Hyon out of the School; and by relieving Hyon of all powers in signing cheques and vouchers and by centralizing every power into his own hand, Cynn has made Hyon's position in the Industrial Dept. nothing more than that of a workman. Thus Cynn has forgotten nothing and forgiven nothing. Hyon further said that Cynn has now set Yi Kui Tai on to the dirty trick of annoying and vexing Hong Pyong Sun; that the Hittlerized motto with Cynn and Helen Kim is: "Deal with men as tools. As long as they serve your purpose use them. The moment they become unhandy or useless throw them away without mercy".
70
12 morning went to the Municipal Hall to see the wedding of Paik Nam Sook to Miss Im.

17. 11월 17일

72
17th. Saturday. Cloudy.

73
Seoul home. Stayed in room with cold. This morning Dr. Cynn and Kim Chui Sung(金聚星) of Pyong Yang Y. came to me. I promised Kim ¥500.00 toward the furnitures for the new Y. building in Pyong Yang.

18. 11월 18일

75
18th. Sunday. Rain between 7:30 and 8:30.

76
Seoul home. Yesterday morning Cynn volunteered the following information. He is a wonderful tête-á-tête speaker. His voice never rises above an ordinary pitch. He said in substance; Hyon D.W. got mad with Barnhart because Barnhart, hearing that Hyon had resigned his position as a teacher in the Night School, put Kim Yung Sup in his place. Hyon's mind seems to get unballanced now and then. His close intercourse with the 7th Day Baptist(安息敎) missionaries appears to have made his mind more susceptible to some strange mental vagaries―including imaginary wrongs, visionary enterprizes etc. He seems to be impatient to be made the General Secretary of Central Y. His latest manifestation of mental disturbance is that he has asked for the advance of two months' salary for a trip to Shanghai. His imaginary wrongs, discontents etc. are abetted by Hong Pyong Sun. For the last 15 years Hong got Cynn into all sorts of trouble. In the General Conference Hong propagated among the delegates the rumor that Cynn had formed a clique to supplant Dr. Ryang by Kim Jong Woo. Cynn was so disgusted that he came near quitting the Conference; but Bishop W. restrained him from so doing. After the Conference Cynn told Hong that he(Cynn) would from now on have nothing to do with church affairs. Hong seeing that he shall not have Cynn as his shield behind which he could work his petty schemes is now doing everything to make Hyon to vex and worry Cynn to divert Cynn's attentions(!!!)
77
The above talk of Cynn, who is not given to confidential talk with me, surprizes and then scares me. What does he mean? Shall I revise my opinions concerning Cynn, Hong and Hyon? I still believe in Hyon's integrity and sincerity plus his level headedness. Before leaving the room Cynn said that Kim Yung Hui told him he had written my biography not with ink but with tears―so bitter was the persecution of Helen Kim for his doing the work. Very strange indeed. I can't understand why she should be so hostile to Kim's writing my biography. I hope she has no other reason for it than the fact that she considers it an act of thaft or treason on the part of Kim to give any portion of his time and service(which belongs to her) to an outside work. However, if she sticks to that kind of psychology, she will most likely fail in her great work in and for the College.

19. 11월 19일

79
19th. Monday. Pale a.m. Bright and bracing p.m.

80
Seoul home. Stayed in room. Mr. Pak Yung Chul phoned the members of the Saturday Club want to give me a celebration. Please don't!!!

20. 11월 20일

82
20th. Tuesday. Cloud and sun.

83
Seoul home. Hear Shon Won Il(孫元一) Chi-Chang's brother-in-law was arrested by the police to be sent to Kang Suh. Chi-Chang spares neither money nor time to help him out. When he married Miss Shon Jin Sil, did he know that he was to marry her whole tribe, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws, not only to help them living, but to defray extra-ordinary expenses―like the funeral expenses of pastor shon, traveling expenses of various members of the family to and from China and elsewhere and the prison expenses of the young man who is now in the policeman's clutch.

21. 11월 21일

85
21st. Wednesday. Bright―Mild.

86
Seoul home. For the first time in five days I took a walk to the Kunwha Kindergarten, then to the Y. Hear Hyon had left for Shanghai to attend an annual meeting of the Sabbatarians or 7th Day Baptists―so Cynn tells me.

22. 11월 22일

88
22nd. Thursday. Cloudy―Chilly.

89
Seoul home. 4 p.m. attended a historial conference at Mr. Appenzeller's home where a number of Koreans who had studied under the old pioneer Appenzeller in the early days of the Pai-Chai School, were gathered to give reminiscence of what they saw or heard or experienced 40 years ago. Dr. Noble and his wife also present with Mrs. Bunker. So sad to hear Dr. Noble and wife are soon to leave Korea for good. These old missionaries should stay with their wise counsels and conservative influence. But the younger missionaries don't like to have the old ones about them, I understand. Besides I hear Mrs. Noble's health requires her home going.
90
A little shower between 7 and 9 a.m.

23. 11월 23일

92
23rd. Friday. Bright―Mild.

93
Seoul home. 2 p.m. the Japanese Y.M.C.A. celebrated its 25th year of its existence and the formal opening of the new buildings. The building cost ¥15,700.00 of which ¥35,722.00 were contributed by 600 individuals and organizations-like the Bank of Chosen and the Industrial Bank. These two gave ¥3,000.00 each. The roomful of Japanese―looking all so substantial and intelligent, gave one confidence that they could plan and run great enterprizes. So many Koreans in a room―will they inspire as much confidence?
94
I entertained the members(40) of the Religious Educators' Association to a Korean supper at 明月館.

24. 11월 24일

96
24th. Saturday. Bright―Mild.

97
Seoul home. Left Seoul 8 a.m. train for Paik Chun Hot Springs with 珽善 where we arrived a little past 11. Put up in Chun-Il Kak, an inn run by a Korean company on Japanese plan. Rather too expensive for Koreans.
98
Dr. Ryang came about 4 p.m. For the first time he spoke to me about the dirty intrigues which Cynn had tried to oust him in the last General Conference. Ryang seems to know as much as I, nay, even more than I, Cynn's unprincipled lust for power and the unscrupulous methods or means which Cynn resorts to get it. Ryang tells me Miss Pak In Duk actually complained to him Hong Pyong Sun's ingratitude to Cynn! She meant thereby that Hong didn't stick to Cynn's "Tammany" tricks in the last General Conference. Ryang confirmed what I had heard from Hyon D.W. that when they asked Cynn to lend his name as one of the promotors(發起人) of my Jubilee celebration he declined to do so, but that he shamelessly asked to be made the chairman when he saw the movement was favorably received by the whole church.

25. 11월 25일

100
25th. Sunday. Cloudy―Mild.

101
Paik Chun Hot Springs. Had a comfortable rest last night. 珽善 has behaved well. Our 璋善 and 琦善 came by the 9 a.m. train. They left Seoul 6.00 this morning. So happy to see them.
102
Left the Springs by 3:17 p.m. train for Seoul boarding the main line at Tosung 4:22. Reached home about 7. Found all well. Thank God.

26. 11월 26일

104
26th. Monday. Pale a.m. Mild. Rain p.m.

105
Seoul home. The weather is more like the weather of mid-spring than that of mid-winter. Lunch at Whashin Dept. Store with wife. Rain began 2 p.m. continued with intermission all through the afternoon and the night.

27. 11월 27일

107
27th. Tuesday. Cloudy. Mild. Sun p.m.

108
Seoul home. Rain most of last night and this morning until 9. Sun afternoon.
109
With wife, Helen K., and Kim Melissa called on Kim Joo Whang and his American wife in the afternoon. This American girl, nee Miss Davis, is a fair and well educated young woman. I understand she fell in love with Kim, a poor Korean student in Ohio Wesleyan. She helped to educate him for 8 years. Her love for him was and is so desperately strong that she forsook all and came to him to live with him a life of poverty in a Korean hut―consisting of 3 small rooms with Korean kitchen at one end. No chairs, nothing to even suggest comfort much less luxury. I felt so sorry for the fair gold haired woman. How long will they keep the first love? Will she, can she stand the awful insanitary mode of life in that hut through Korea's rigorous winters and sickly rainny seasons? What science can explain this kind of feminine love?

28. 11월 28일

111
28th. Wednesday. Bright. Real cold.

112
Seoul home 12 morning went to Myong Wol Kwan to attend the wedding ceremony of Yi Tai Woo and Miss Kim Dai Wook. Then the usual wedding feast. Home about 3 p.m.
113
Mr. 徐廷禧 professing to have a great interest in my well being suggested this afternoon, that I should exert myself for promoting harmonious relations between Cynn and Hyon. Soh evidently doesn't know who Cynn is.
114
5:30 p.m. the Central Y. Board of Directors met to hear last month's report and to pass the budges for 1935. Cynn is his quiet and insinuating tone and manner reported that Hyon had to be replaced as a teacher in the Night School by someone whom Cynn didn't name. His wonderful trick of eliminating those who do not obey him unconditionally works like a charm. He has completely succeeded now in his plan of making things so disagreeable that a sensitive and honest man like Hyon will simply have to quit. Cynn is certainly a dangerous man. Every man who has had any dealing with him fears him. His smiles as well as his frowns are to be avoided.
115
The Central Y. has an annual income of ¥56,000.00. To turn a plant with such a building and such an income into the headquarters of an unscrupulous Tammany trickster is surely a sad business.

29. 11월 29일

117
29th. Thursday. Bright―Very cold.

118
Seoul home. It is now understood that Sohn Won Il, brother Chi Chang's brother-in-law, is charged with the "crime" of having graduated form the military school in Nan-King.

30. 11월 30일

120
30th. Friday. Bright―Cold.

121
Seoul home. This morning Kim Yung Hui called and confidentially told me that his position is growing more and more erksome as the friction between Miss Appenzeller and Miss Helen Kim is a matter of daily occurence. For instance: On the question of securing the official recognition of the Domestic Science Dept. of the college, Miss A. contends that they should inplicitly rely upon the good offices of the Educational Bureau of the Government General while Miss Helen Kim insists that someone(she) should go to Tokyo and appeal directly to the Minister of Education for the recognition. Kim Yung Hui had to side with Miss A.Kim says he can't help sympathizing with Miss Appenzeller for her loneliness.
122
6 p.m. went to the Kook-il-Kwan Restaurant to entertain the alumni of the old Anglo-Korean School. Altogether 14 people of whom 12 were the "graduates" of that school.
