1. 9월 1일

2
1st. Saturday. Beautiful.

3
Seoul home. I find in the Articles of the Y. Juridical Person the following explicit provision in regard to money belonging to the Foundation: "Art. 6. Money belonging to the Foundation Property shall be deposited in a reliable bank or converted into reliable negotiable securities". Therefore to use the money in any other form or manner would expose the trustees to the danger of being hauled into the Criminal court for having misappropriated a public fund on fraudulent pretext. Well I have definitely made up my mind not to consent to any proposal to either borrow from the Foundation Fund or to use it as security for a loan, however profitable the buying of the Chang Moon Sa Press may look.

2. 9월 2일

5
2nd. Sunday. Beautiful.

6
Seoul home. Went to the station 8:25 to welcome Dr. Underwood and family back to Korea. They all looked hale and hearty as ever.
7
Worshipped at the Jong Kyo Church.
8
Went to Bu Am Jung with 珽善 at 1:30 p.m. I enjoy the green foliage the silvery stream, the sweet atmosphere and the quietness of Bu Am Jung.

3. 9월 3일

10
3rd. Monday. Beautiful.

11
Seoul home. This morning Hyon and Hong came and told me that they have given up the idea of buying the Chang Moon Sa Press for the Central Y. I am glad of it.
12
8 p.m. attended a call meeting of the Pai-Chai Board of Directors. Except Dr. Becker, all members, 11 in all, were present Cynn in the chair, and announced the good news that two men―one a graduate of Pai-Chai―have consented to give ¥200,000.00 to make a Zai Dan for the School. One of them became a mining "narikin" while the other amassed a fabulous amount of money by selling his land at Na-nam(羅南) at ¥20.00 a tsubo which he had bought for a few sen a tsubo. Certainly the old Pai-Chai School is to be congratulated for this God given windfall. Mr. Kim Bong Hyuk deserves the entire credit for securing this magnificent gift for pai-Chai.

4. 9월 4일

14
4th. Tuesday. Cloudy―Rain from 6 p.m.

15
Seoul home. The Directors' Meeting of the Chang Moon Sa Press, from 5:30 to 8. Kim Chin Ho of the Han Sung Press, proposed to buy the Chang Moon Sa Property at ¥15,000.00. Koo Ja Hyuk opposed saying we must get at least ¥20,000.00 to clean up the liabilities of Chang Moon Sa. Committed the question to Messrs. Hong, No and Ko.

5. 9월 5일

17
5th. Wednesday. Rain.

18
Seoul home. Steady and heavy rain all last night and this morning until 11:30.
19
Went to Lily Garden Restaurant at 12 to wait for Mr. Yu Han Ik whom I had asked yesterday to take lunch with me. He didn't show up until 1:25.
20
Hyon tells me that Cynn had made an appointment with the prospective donors to meet them at the Chosen Hotel at 11 yesterday morning. Cynn didn't go until 1 p.m. saying he had thought the hour fixed was 5 p.m. Just like Cynn. He is a typical yangban in his notion of dignity.
21
Yu Kwang Nyol is a pro-Cynn writer. He had some printing to be done, but the Chang Moon Sa Press wouldn't give him credit. So Cynn stood as Yu's security. Yu failing to pay for the work Chang Moon Sa, of course, asked Cynn to pay. Cynn had the cheek to say that as the Principal Yu is still living he(the security many) wasn't obliged to pay for him! From every angle, Cynn is shown to be a thoroughly unreliable man. He has no interest in any person or institution except so far and as long as, he can make him or it a stepping stone to his personal gain or power.
22
If the Pai-Chai H.C.S. gets on a secure basis of permanent endowment, young Appenzeller will have to look after his position.

6. 9월 6일

24
6th. Thursday. Pretty.

25
Seoul home. Under the joint auspices of the Dong-A-Il-Po and the Society for Dramatic Studies a musical and theatrical show was staged in the Public Hall for the benefit of Flood Relief Fund. Our 埼善 played a piano solo.

7. 9월 7일

27
7th. Friday. Sun―Steamy.

28
Seoul home. Rained last night about midnight. Spent about 3 afternoon hours in Bu Am Jung.
29
Fifteen States in America have suffered from unprecedented drought this year. China has the double visitations of drought and flood in different sections of the country causing death and misery to millions of people. Canada also has had its share of drought so that cattle has no grass to feed on. The Southern sections of Korea have had flood not once but two or three times in succession. There seems to be no country in the world which is free from natural or political troubles or both.

8. 9월 8일

31
8th. Saturday. Cloud. Sun.

32
Seoul home. This morning Hyon Dong Wan came and told me that he had informed Dr. Cynn yesterday that he would quit work in the Central Y. The immediate cause for this decision on the part of Hyon is the open accusation of Jung Sung Chai that H. had sold some valuable article belonging to the Y. and "ate" up the proceeds. Jung and Hong Pyong Duk are the two right hand men of Cynn. In spite of the fact that Hong P.D. had, as the Principal of the Y. school, "eaten" up all the money there was in the school, over a thousand Yen, he has bee made the "Kansa" of the Religious, Membership, Social and Agricultural Sectins―simply because he is a handy tool to Cynn. I wish H. could hold out.

9. 9월 9일

34
9th. Sunday. Beautiful.

35
Seoul home. Today being the 45th Anniversary of wife's birthday we had a family reunion, our children from Song Do also being with us. God bless her and us all!
36
2:30 p.m. with Mr. and Mrs. Hong Pyong Sun went to Dook-Sum(纛圖) for a visit to Hyon D.W's Summer home. The ride was tedious, the gasoline car being crowded to capacity with flies thick on the ceiling. Well, from the little car station we had to walk half an hour. We got a warm welcome from H. and his charming wife. Had a hurried supper we started out 6:30 to catch the 7 p.m. car. Reached home about 8.

10. 9월 10일

38
10th. Monday. Cloud and sun.

39
Seoul home. Hyon D.W. thinks Cynn is rather nonplussed at his(H's) decision to quit the Y. May it be true? May it not be the fact that Hyon has done exactly what Cynn has been working to force Hyon to do? Cynn played very much the same trick―not by him of course, but through his cat's paws―to edge Koo Ja Ok and Yi David out of the Y. If Hyon wants to stay in the job, he must absolutely surrender himself to Cynn―as a Juk Kuk Bandit to obey him unconditionally. A mere compromise will not help H. What C. demands of H. is not reconciliation but surrender.
40
Called on Mrs. Gorman 4 p.m. with Dr. Jung to arrange an hour a week for our Ki-Sunie to get piano lessons from her. She consented to teach him 4:30 to 5:30 every thursday.

11. 9월 11일

42
11th. Tuesday. Beautiful.

43
Seoul home.
44
Strong Westerly wind both yesterday and today. Hyon and family returned to their city home this morning. He let himself to be persuaded by Cynn to stay in the Y. Hyon says Cynn and Jung Sung Chai―the latter the real trouble monger this time―was closed with Cynn for more than 4 hours yesterday evening. They must be up to something. Hyon thinks they will concoct some scheme to get him out.
45
Hear the would-be donors of ¥200,000.00 to Pai-Chai are demanding 5 seats on the Board of Directors to be composed of 9 members.
46
6 : 30 attended a Korean feast at Myong Wol Kwan given by General O-Kushi, the Chief of Staff of the Army of Korea.

12. 9월 12일

48
12th. Wednesday. Pretty.

49
Seoul home. From 2 p.m. the 10th Annual Inter-Middle School Basket Ball Championship Contest was staged on the Central Y. Ground. Fiften middle grade schools on the list. Four "senmon" schools. It is rather unfair to pit the First H.C.S. team against a private H.C.S. team. The boys of former school are all under 18 while the latter boys are above 18 or 20.
50
Hyon told me that he had asked Cynn to give him a leave from his work in the Industrial Dept. as Jung continues his disagreeable attitude.

13. 9월 13일

52
13th. Thursday. Rain all day.

53
Seoul home.
54
Rain from 7 a.m. Quite cold in the morning.
55
4:30 p.m. with Lambuth went to Mr. Gorman's home to begin piano-lessons. She showed him what her ideas of the primary technics are. The bother is every new teacher has his or her own set of technics more or less different. Music is a science as well as an art. Why is it that piano teachers have no uniform and universal technics?

14. 9월 14일

57
14th. Friday. Lovely.

58
Seoul home. 4 p.m. the Chang Moon Sa Directors had their meeting at the Tai Suh Kwan Restaurant. Mr. No Ik Hyong informed us that Kim Jin Ho had consented to buy the Chang Moon Sa property for ¥19,000.00, the highest bid so far not only, but, I am sure, that we can reasonably expect anybody to make. But Koo Ja Hyuk insisted that we should not close the bargain as someone might offer more! Here is a fellow who hasn't succeeded to get a buyer who offers anything, yet who wants others to bring customers willing to pay ¥20,000.00 or even more. He is a dog in the manger.

15. 9월 15일

60
15th. Saturday. Beautiful.

61
The final day of the Basket Ball Contest. Watched the games from 2:30 to 7 p.m. Then I was invited to an entertainment given by the Joong-Ang Il-Po at Myong Wol Kwan in honor of its Directors, consulting members and advisors, so called. Mr. Yuh Woon Jyong being a sportsman, the table talks drifted into matters pertaining to various forms of sport. A teacher from Yang Jung H.C.S. said the Japanese are showing signs of jealousy toward the unbroken successes of the Yang-Jung boys in field and track meets held in great cities in Japan.

16. 9월 16일

63
16th. Sunday. Cloudy―Steamy.

64
Seoul home. Went to a Grape Garden―once started by the German Priests, now run by the Koreans inside the Small East Gate. Took 瑛姬, 寶姬, and 珽善 with me. We were disappointed―the so called Garden very ill kept. The men handling the grapes more or less like coolies. They sold grapes very dear too. Everything so unattractive.
65
Called on Hyon D.W. about 5 p.m. Met Lady Ahn(安尙宮) whom I saw 50 years ago when I frequented the Palace 1883―4. She recognized me at once. Her informations of what she experience in the Palace in 1882(壬午) , 1884(甲午) , 1894(甲午) and 1895(乙未) was very interesting.

17. 9월 17일

67
17th. Monday. Cloudy―Cool a.m.

68
Seoul home.
69
This afternoon Kim Tai Won called on me and asked me to attend the Annual Meeting of the C.L.S. to be held in the Pierson Memorial Hall and to use my influence and vote to elect Cynn the President or Vice President of the Executive Committee. Nothing seemed to be easier than that so I cheerfully promised to do so. 7:30 p.m. went to the Pierson Memorial Hall. I was made Chairman of the nominating committee, composed of Hugh Miler, Clark, Hardie and Nam Koong Hyuk besides myself. They elected Swainhart for President, Ryang for Vice President, Koons and Pail for Secretaries and Miller for treasurer. Cynn was elected one of the remaining three members of the Committee(Executive) .
70
When we reported our nomination to the meeting each man was voted individually. All got elected except Cynn! The Presbyterial Missionaries don't want Cynn.

18. 9월 18일

72
18th. Tuesday. Pretty and Heatish.

73
Seoul home. At her request, I called on Helen Kim at her home 9 this morning. She said something like this: "In spite of all our efforts to Koreanize(朝鮮化) our Ewha College, in its atmosphere, in its curricula, in its discipline, we can't, simply we can't. The missionary teachers from a block and no wonder they can't see things as we do. I am in danger of losing the precious friendship I have had with Miss Appenzeller because of the conflict in our opinions. Now we must have a person whom we both Appenzeller and I, can trust as our advisor and leader. We want you to be our president"! I was dumbfounded.

19. 9월 19일

75
19th. Wednesday. Pretty.

76
Seoul home. Appropose of what Helen Kim said to me yesterday, I wonder what she really means. Is it her desire to have someone in the school to back her up for the realization of what she regards to be the best policy for the College? Or does she and Miss Appenzeller―want to have me to become the head of the College in order to raise or give the necessary fund for the endowment of the institution? I learn that the Japanese authorities have asked Miss Appenzeller to withdraw her petition for raising the fund by public subscription on the ground that a school that can afford to put up buildings at the cost of hundreds of thousands of Yens needs not go to the public for money. At any rate I can't take any responsible position in the College either as its president or as its founder(設立者) without making the public to believe that I am to donate the bulk of the fund needed―say 100,000.00 Yen. I know I can't do that―so no use of thinking about the matter.

20. 9월 20일

78
20th. Thursday. Cloudy. Very cool.

79
Seoul home. By the way, Cynn has started a series of park preaching. I understand he to preach and Miss P.I.D. to play the piano. What an exquisite combination for evengelization of sinful Seoul! The courage of this couple is simply superb.
80
A Society for Prevention of Narcotic Habits has been formed by the well meaning Director of Police Bureau. All good: but the police could have almost eradicated the habits years age.

21. 9월 21일

82
21st. Friday. Cloudy a.m. Cool sun p.m.

83
Seoul home. Papers report a terrible visitation of typhoon on the cities of Osaka, Kyoto and Kobe―the greatest elemental calamity in Japan since the great earthquake of 1912. Details later.
84
This being the 25th Anniversary of the day on which father left this world, we had a family memorial service, 8:30―9:30 p.m.
85
On the last day of Aug. Mr. Choi Rin organized a new Association or Club, calling it Si-Joong Hoi(詩中會) . Its chief sponcers are Messrs. 金思演, 趙基栞, 張稷相, 朴熙道, 鄭大鉉, 河駿錫, 鄭廣朝, 金大羽, 朴駿榮, 崔碩連, 鄭應琫, 朱鍾宣. Its Cabinet Members are 崔麟, 朴榮喆, 金恩演, 鄭大鉉. Its object to be announced when the Society or Party is formally organized sometime in Octover.
86
This new movement, whatever its ultimate goal may be, has lately received a shock, when the Joong-Ang-Il-Po and Dong-A-Il-Po published the report that 羅蕙錫 had filed a suit against Choi Rin that he had violated her chastity etc. The Police authorities are protecting Choi with all their might.

22. 9월 22일

88
22nd . Saturday. Lovely.

89
Seoul home. 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. the Annual Fieldday for the Seoul Normal School and its affiliated Primary Schools. Our 寶姬 and 瑛姬 are of the Girls' Primary School. So our family gladly attended the show―our mother, too.
90
1 p.m. attended the wedding ceremony of Kim Tai Yun, (Mr. Kim Il Sun's son) and Miss Pak. The wedding feast at Myung Wol Kwan at 4―6 p.m.

23. 9월 23일

92
23rd. Sunday. Cloudy all day. Rain 7―9 p.m.

93
8 a.m. train went to On-Yang with 珽善 and 寶姬 to pay our filial respect to father's grave. Reaching the Hot Springs a little after 11 had a refreshing bath. Then to the old On-Yang-Up where father's tomb is-in a "riksha”. Returned to Seoul by 3:20 train leaving the Hot Springs Station―changed car at Chun-An Station―just this side of Sung whan Station, the engine got into trouble causing two hours delay in its schedule. Arrived home 9.
94
Miss Helen Kim in a letter received today gives three reasons why I should accept a position in the Ewha College. 1. The college needs a central personality. 2. It needs a Zaidan Hojin with a capital of say ¥300,000.00 She want me to give this big sum either entirely or partly. 3. The College needs the background of my experience. etc., etc.

24. 9월 24일

96
24th. Monday. Cloudy. Cool.

97
Seoul home. 9:30 a.m. went to the Seoul Stadium to see the girls inter-high-school tennis tournament. What interests us most is that one of the participating teams is of the Seoul Girls' Higher Common School. After due eliminations, the final contest was between our Higher Common School team and the team of the Japanese First High School. About 5 the exciting match began when a shower flooded the court so that the game had to be called off and postponed to 3 p.m. tomorrow.

25. 9월 25일

99
25th. Tuesday. Cloudy―Cool.

100
Seoul home.
101
3 p.m. with wife and 珽善 went to the Seoul Ground to see the final contest between the Korean team of the Seoul Higher Common School and the Japanese team of the First Girls' High School. The Korean girls won―to the undisguised delight of the Korean spectators.
102
If you want to know what the popular feeling is among the Koreans toward the Japanese, go and observe the attitude of the Korean crowds where and when a match game of any kind is being played between a Japanese team and a foreign team. Last year a boxing contest was staged in the Seoul Stadium between a Philippino and a Japanese. Everytime the Philippino landed a telling hit on the Japanese the Koreans cheered frantically. One of the reasons why Korean young men are so enthusiastic about boxing, is said to be the fact that a Korean, may or do maul a Japanese as much as he wishes without being hauled to the police station. I don't think that's right spirit but right or wrong, it's fact.

26. 9월 26일

104
26th. Wednesday. Lovely a.m.

105
Seoul home. 2 p.m. our family went to the An Dong Church to see the wedding of 5th son of cousin No. 2 to Miss Yi Kui Wha. To the usual feast at the Myong Wol KWan.
106
7 p.m. with wife, 恩姬, went to the Seoul Stadium to see the amateur boxing matches. Was surprized to see 恩姬 so interested in the sport that she insisted to see through nearly half of the program.

27. 9월 27일

108
27th. Thursday. Pretty. Pleasant.

109
Seoul home.
110
This morning's Seoul Press gives the toll of the recent typhoon disaster in Japan. 3 great municipalities and 32 prefectures affected. Osaka, Kyoto and Hyogo hardest hit. Altogether 2,305 persons killed, many of them school boys and girles; 2,839 injured; 399 missing; 28,221 houses completely demolished; 34,576 partly so; 20,414 swept away; 298,235 inundated; 289 school buildings collapsed; 1,114 bridges damaged and 8,845 vessels damaged. Property destroyed estimated at over 400 million Yen! All that inside of a few hours.
111
Hyon D. W.'s story. A week or so ago, Yi Hyuk, the anarchist young man threatened to publish the Cynn and P.I.D. affair in the Sam Chun Ii magazine. Cynn hearing of this was so scared that he begged Hyon to see 元世勳 to stop Yi. Hyon with Hong P.S. begged 元世勳 to save Cynn from the disgrace, Hong guaranteeing that Cynn would not go about with P.I.D., or pay her nocturnal visits. Won succeeded in stopping Yi. Then Cynn asked Hong to tell Hyon to get the manuscripts from Yi, or else the whole story would be regarded as Hyon's fabrication! Cynn further told Hong that Hyon is trying to hurt C.'s reputation in order to get the General Secretaryship of the Central Y. Thus the breach between Cynn and Hyon or rather Cynn's hatred of Hyon is irremovable.
112
Hyon simply has to leave the Y. under circumstances.

28. 9월 28일

114
28th. Friday. Pretty. Began raining about 11 p.m.

115
Seoul home. Rather heaty, preparing for rain.

29. 9월 29일

117
29th. Saturday. Rain from last night.

118
Seoul home. This morning about 9, Hyon called and said that yesterday afternoon Cynn, looking rather haggard from a week of illness came to the Y., to have an or two hours' talk with him. Cynn asked Hyon in his suave way, to stay in the Y.―promising that (1) he would quit any objectionable intercourse with P.I.D.; (2) that he would stop anybody in the building from interfering with Hyon's work; (3) that Hyon would be given the authority to sign all the vouchers as before. Hyon taking Cynn's assurances at their face value consented to return to the work in the Industrial Dept. to finish something he had left unfinished. So Hyon left me to go to the Central Y. About 11:30 Hyon came again and said: "I have been fooled again by Cynn. When I got to the building Jung Sung Chai, Cynn's right hand man, suddenly called the staff with Barnhart and Wilber, thrown in, to a conference. Jung in a rather excited manner began to explain that he didn't mean I had defrauded the Industrial Dept. of its fund and that I had made untrue reports to Mr. Kim Il Sun and you. In the meantime Cynn was brought in by Barnhart. Now if Cynn was sincere in his promises and protests made to me yesterday afternoon, he would and ought to have at once ordered Jung not to open up a quarrel that had been closed. But Cynn dropped a remark now and then to encourage rather than to stop Jung. Cynn even went so far as to say that I shouldn't have told a family affair to you and Kim. So in disgust I left the room and sent my resignation to Cynn". C.'s trick seems to have staged all this drama just to be able to say that he had tried his best to keep Hyon but that Hyon left Y. because he had a quarrel with Jung.
119
4 p.m. the Chang Moon Sa Co. held an extraordinary meeting of its shareholders to pass a resolution for its final disposal. Mr. Koo Ja Hyuk asked the meeting not to sell the Press but to let him manage it on his single responsibility. He proposed to (1) binding himself not to call for any additional payment. The holders voted to hand over the Press to Mr.
120
Koo. Mr. No Ik Hyung and I voted to dissolve the Chang Moon Sa Co.

30. 9월 30일

122
30th. Sunday. Rain―like summer rain!

123
Seoul home. Rain all day long. 10:30 with wife went to Kyong Bok Palace ground to attend the 6th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Women's Patriotic Society. Princess Higashi Fushimi presided. An immense crowd of women and umbrellas.
