1st. Tuesday. Blazing sun.

3
Seoul home. 11 a.m. Mr. Hong P.S. and his wife called. Went to Bu-Am-Jung out side North Gate with them and had lunch there. Returned home about 5 p.m. Our Bu-Am-Jung is a charming place so quiet and green with good supply of cool well water. I wish I could spend some days here.

2. 8월 2일

6
Seoul home.

3. 8월 3일

3rd. Thursday. Blazing sun.

9
Seoul home. Blazing sun with burning heat. East wind drying up everything.

4. 8월 4일

11
4th. Friday. Cloudy―Steamy.

12
Seoul home. Steamy and cloudy with occasional spray of misty rain―but no real rain at all.
13
The Anglo-Japanese Tokyo Conversation seems to have come to a deadlock. The English appear to contend that they are to refrain from any acts or measures that might hurt the Japanese and benefit the Chinese only in the regions under the Japanese control; that they are free to help Chiang Kai Sek outside that region. Wonderful loop-hole! How is it that the Japanese negotiators failed to plug up that hole.

5. 8월 5일

15
5th. Saturday. Dull sun. Very hot.

16
Seoul home. A paper says there are something like 800 destitute people from the drought stricken districts in the South who are living under the Han Kang Bridge where there is no water. I went out this morning to see them. It is an awful sight. So many families with all their worldly goods in a paper box, with nothing but straw mats as curtains while many of them haven't even that much. Old women, little children―worn-out women and starving men―huddled together under the arches. What will they do when rain swells the river? Tens of thousands of bags of barley are being collected from the parched up village just to feed the horses in the war zones. War is cruel.

6. 8월 6일

18
6th. Sunday. Blazing sun. Baking heat.

19
Seoul home. Yesterday afternoon, at 5 about 60 delegates from local Anti-English Associations met at the Chosun Hotel to form an All-Korea-Anti-English Union. They elected me the nominal president of the same with Mr. Yanabe for Vice President. There were Anti-English speeches etc. Some of them proposed to taboo the use of English words―such as Cafe hotel etc.
20
Those Japanese who, in their intense nationalism, advocate the abolishment of the English language from the higher school curricula seem to ignore 2 important facts: 1. The English language is not only the mother tongue of 40 million English people but it is the mother tongue of 120 million American and of millions upon millions of the English speaking commonwealths throughout the world. It is the official and intellectual language of 300 million Indians. Can a Japanese go to Africa without speaking English? Besides two nations may engage in war speaking the same language.

7. 8월 7일

22
7th. Monday. Blazing sun. Baking heat.

23
Seoul home. 64 years(丙子) ago we had a fearful drought. Early frost on the day of 8th Moon, destroyed what war left by the drought. This year we haven't had the frost yet, but the east wind that has been blowing for days and nights on end.
24
Our 琦善 and 泰燮 left Seoul 11:05 p.m. for Song Jun Beach. 琦善 has been devoting his time to piano lessons day and night since his return.

10. 8월 10일

32
10th. Thursday. Awful hot.

33
Seoul home. 璋燮 left Seoul 8:20 a.m. for Song Jun Beach. The accumulated heat of the days and weeks past seems to have reached its summit today. Rooms in our home are like baking ovens. Am happy. Wife and children are at the seaside away from these terrible hot days in the city.
34
10 a.m. with Mr. Yanabe called on Governor-General, Civil Administrator, Commander of Gendarmery, Director of Police Department, Commander-in-Chief of the Army of Korea, the Director of Information Section to report the establishment of the Anti-English Associations.

11. 8월 11일

36
11th. Friday. Steamy heat.

37
Seoul home. Papers say thermometer rose to 103˚F. yesterday, the highest the Weather Bureau has ever recorded since its foundation some 30 years ago. Last night it was so hot at home that one could hardly sleep.
38
Went to Local Court 10 a.m. to answer questions which the judge asked me concerning the miserable Shin Jum Dong affair. Left Seoul 3:10 p.m. for Song Jun via Wonsan. Reaching Wonsan a few minutes after the schedule time I missed the Song Jun train. Had to put up at a Korean inn (東亞旅館) for the night.

12. 8월 12일

40
12th. Saturday. Sun and heat.

41
Had a poor rest. Up at 5 a.m. Left Wonsan 5:05 reaching Song Jun 6:58. Found our dear ones all safe and sound, thank God.

50
Song Jun Beach. We all enjoyed sea bathing.

16. 8월 16일

52
16th. Wednesday. Scorching heat.

53
Left Song Jun Beach per 6:01 train for Wonsan to catch the express for Seoul. Wife, 璋善, 珽善, 寶姬, 暎姬, 奉嬋, 恩姬 and her little baby and I formed a goodly company. The cars so crowded that I let wife and 恩姬 take second class while rest of us travelled 3rd. 璋善 had to make the entire trip standing. We left Wonsan 9:02 a.m. and reached Seoul a little past 2 p.m. Thank God our children had even this little of the seaside vacation. Altogether I spent a week. We all wished we could stay a week even longer.
54
While we had two good rain falls at Song Jun Beach, they tell me there wasn't a drop of rain Seoul during our absence.

17. 8월 17일

56
17th. Thursday. Blazing sun. Burning heat.

19. 8월 19일

62
19th. Saturday. Blazing sun.

63
Seoul home. This terrible drought and scorching heat are parching up grass and plants. Hares, deers, wild hogs having nothing to eat come down to villages seeking food in some mountainous districts. This is the greatest drought Korea has had in a century to say the least.

20. 8월 20일

65

66
Seoul home.

69
Seoul home.

22. 8월 22일

71
22nd. Tuesday. Cloudy early a.m. Burning sun p.m.

72
Seoul home. While Korea is suffering from a unprecedented drought and heat they are having too much rain and flood in Tientsin. Papers report the Japanese settlement with its population of 40,000 is under water 7 to 8 ft. deep. The French and English settlements are also flooded. Yet the Japanese blockade of the English settlement is kept up with all strictness.
73
It is announced in the papers that Germany and Russia have concluded an agreement of mutual nonaggression. This will enable Hitler to deal with Poland without fear of Russian intervention while Stalin may now feel free to devote his whole strength against Japan.

23. 8월 23일

23rd. Wednesday. Cloudy. Steamy a.m.

26. 8월 26일

84
26th. Saturday. Beautiful. Scorching heat.

85
Seoul home. 7:30 this morning went to Chosun Hotel where a number of Y.M.C.A. men gave a breakfast party in honor of Professor Yamada of Waseda University and a prominent Y.M.C.A. man from Tokyo. He has just come from an extended trip in Manchuria. According to him in 10 years, Japan may become self-sufficient in iron, cotton, oil, coal, aluminium. He believes the yellow Sea will become more important than the Mediterranean Sea in the matter of population, material resources and civilization in a near future.
86
The dirty trick Hitler has played in making a Russo German alliance without committing Japan seems to hurt the Japanese to the quick. Hitler had played with Japan as a mean fellow would have played with an innocent child. One good thing is that the boundless and crazy Hitler worship in Japan will be somewhat cooled. It is reported General Terauchi and Admiral Ohsumi 大角 who were despatched by the Japanese Government to attend the great Nazi's Assembly to be held in Berlin in September have decided to stop in Geneva without going to Germany.

92
Seoul home. 12 morning went to Kai Ko Sha 偕行社 where a luncheon party was given by Mr. Yesaka, the Chief of the Seoul Soldiers' Affairs Bureau (whatever it mears) in celebration of the opening this new Bureau.
93
Real rain began about 1:30 and continued more or less steadily until 6:30.
94
The Tokyo Cabinet tendered resignation en toto as an apology to the Emperor and to the nation for the wretched Hitler worship from which they (the Cabinet) have so recently been disillusioned by the rude and contemptuous attitude of their idol―Hitler. This wicked demon of Europe has simply slapped the face of the Japanese nation by concluding a military mutual defensive treaty with Russia.

29th. Tuesday. More or less rain from 12 a.m.
