Mr. 竹內, the Japanese editor of 半島時論 gave a talk to the boys. The small lecture room was full. I was too sleepy to hear any he said.

Yesterday's rain seemed to have cleared off but a cold strong north-western gale blew all day long.

Left Seoul by 8:40 train for 新村 to pay consolatory visit to the family of 再從兄致奭 who had died a week ago. Arrived 平澤 about 11. The road execrably bad―and angle deep―wind so strong that rickshaw couldn't move forward―the lazy, no acc't rickshaw men, two of them at ¥1.00 per fellow couldn't manage the little vehicle―had to send back the rickshaw and to walk. Arrived 新村 about 11 p.m.

Up early and after breakfast left 新村 for 平澤 8:20 a.m. Waited nearly two hours in the station.

On the train met Viscount Mr. 李根澤 and had a chat on the economic conditions of the Yangban families in Seoul. He is of the opinion that the reason why so many young men of Yangban families go off into life of debauchery is that they have no high aim to strive after―such as the high official positions they used to hope to fill.

Arrived Seoul 3:30 p.m. Supper at 山本牧師's home 6-9:30 p.m. Rev. 宮川 was there too. Had a nice evening.

Went to 石橋 Church to be present at the Baccalaureate sermon preached by Mr. Stokes to the graduating class of the 神學校. Too sleepy to hear much.

Went to 貞信女學校. Spoke with girls. Met Miss Kim Pil Yei, the sister of Dr. 金弼淳. Charmed with her beauty and sensible manner.

Received letters from Mr. P.J. Lim(林炳稷) , the son of 林潤相 to whom I sent ¥52.00 at the request of the later. A sweet letter from Helen.

For no cause I know of, wife has been in fits of ugly temper for last two days. She is so ill bred, so absolutely selfish that nothing can satisfy her self-love. She is a heartless and thoughtless woman; But I must bear all this patiently for the sake of my precious little children.

Mr. 上田 the representative of Mr. Usami said: When I first came to the exercises I couldn't help asking the question in my mind "Are they turning out living dictionaries or living men?" But when I heard Dr. Van Buskirk make a make a speech in Japanese the question answered itself thus: If the president of the institution speaks in Japanese so well the students must be well up, too, in the use of national language. Now I know you are turning out living men. The criterion or standard of manhood in Korea is the ability of speaking the Japanese language in high standard that...

2 p.m. went to Church to see the Easter celebration of the little children. Grace, now only about 3 years old, voluntarily went up to the platform and behaved herself with such cuteness and gracefulness that the whole church could hardly keep back hand clapping cheering. She is certainly a jewel and a treasure. Such a 재롱구럭이 she is.
