Mr. 崔南善 called about 10:30 and sat or rather besieged me for one hour and half urging me to pay for him in cash ¥30,000.00 for starting the 時代日報. He doesn't seem to realize the dreadful tightness of the money market just now. No matter what I said about the impossibility of my complying with his modest request he kept on repeating his demand. He is a scholar but not a business man. I fear men like 方斗煥 are making merchandize of his reputation. Mr.崔 will surely fail to make the proposed newspaper a paying concern for the simple good reason that he will not be allowed by the Japanese to out 東亞 the 東亞日報 in anti-Japanese attitude. If he falls short of 東亞日報 in Anti Japanese attitude, the Korean public will not patronize his paper. But if he should succeed to be equal with the 東亞日報 he wouldn't be able to supersede it in the matter of circulation. Why should I pay the enormous sum of ¥30,000.00 for starting another Dumb paper? I can use that money for education to far great advantage.

Directors' meeting at Y.M.C.A. The Y. is ¥10,666.36 short this year―to be made good by scraping all the Reserve Fund. That's bad; for, were there no Reserve, the Y. would have been in debt for 10, 666. Cynn is an able man―but he doesn't seem to have proper idea of economy. His idea is "We must spend in order to gain." That may be a good rule but the spending should not exceed the possible gain.
