Practically no Korean home in Seoul now keeps the new year's day according the Solar Calendar. The simple fact that the Japanese celebrates it seems to have driven the Koreans to the use the Lunar Calendar all the more.

Visited father's tomb early in the morning. Left the hot spring about 10 a.m. for Sai-Mal. The road to muddy―at places ankle deep―that two strong men pulling and pushing the rickshaw covered the distance of 40 li in nearly 7 hours. Rain all the afternoon. Arrived at Sai-Mal at 6 p.m.

The Koreans, in villages or towns have so little of public spirit―the spirit of cooperation, of discipline, of subordinating individual interest to the common welfare―that roads and bridges which it is the interest of everybody to keep in good order, are intolerably neglected. Nothing but force official or otherwise, can make the villagers to do anything in the way of fixing the roads or bridges. Yet there are Seoul-ful of half educated Koreans who are clamoring for Communism which can never be realized except among a people who have attained the highest degree of co-operative civilization. Even the Anglo-Saxons haven't reached that stage―leave alone the Korean. The Korean edition of the damned Russian Bolshevism is nothing more or less than down right Bragandism pure and simple. The Japanese, by depriving the Korean of every means of livelihood, are driving him into Bolshevism.

21. 2월 21일

70
21st. Wednesday. Cloudy. Windy.

71
Sai-Mal home. Snow early morning―thinly mantling fields and hills. Everybody prophesies a rain-ful year and good rice crops this year. The weather has turned decidedly cold.

22. 2월 22일

73

74
Cold enough to keep the road frozen all the day. Left Sai―Mal 9 a.m. for Seoul. The road to 成歡 so bumpy that I preferred walking to riding the rickshaw.
75
Leaving 成歡 at 12:50, arrived at Seoul 5 p.m. All well at home, thanks to God.

23. 2월 23일

77
23rd.Friday. Bright. Very cold.

78
Seoul home. Wife complaining aches everywhere, I took her to see Dr. 金容埰. He found nothing wrong but suggested that she might be enceinte and that we would do well to consult Dr. Fuji-i 藤井, the noted Japanese specialist on women's complaints of the kind. But wife refuses to see Dr. F. She is too modest as well as too afraid lest the Doctor might recommend some sort of operation.

24. 2월 24일

81

Mr. Crowninshield in an article on the changes which the social life of New York has undergone during the last hundred years, has this to say about the forces that "completely disorganized the social life" of the Empire State after the Great War. "Those sudden and terrifying changes included (1) a growingly anarchic attitude toward authority in whatever form; (2) the liberation of youth to its own whims and devices; (3) the removal of every ritual of escort or chaperonage; (4) the scant attention paid to older people; (5) a blinking at supposed or open liaisons; (6) the sudden growth of drinking, smoking, dancing and card playing among women; (7) an increased neuroticism; and (8) a fantastic increase in the number of divorces among people of fashion." With very slight modifications, all these causes are literally applicable, word for word, to the disorganization of the socal fabric in Korea. It is reported that a 抗父同盟會(Father-Resisting-Association) and a 離婚同盟會(Divorce Association) have recently been started among certain Korean youth!!!
