Seoul home. From 2 p.m. 彰文社, 重役會. The Committee of Auditors presented report, showing among other things (1) 朴容羲 had embezzled ¥500.00 substituting the cash with a promissory note (of no value) ; (2) 朴鵬緖 the present 專務 had followed the example of his predecessor to the amount of ¥700.00; (3) Of the capital of ¥87,500.00 only ¥73,618.00 paid up while ¥13,882.00 in notes; (4) During the last six months the office expenses had amounted to ¥3,955.00 averaging ¥659 1/6 per month; (5) The cash balance now in the banks stands only ¥40,557.59. 朴勝鳳 and 朴鵬緖 who boastfully told the 總會 on the Nov. last year that if they failed to secure the paying up of first instalment of 2,000 shares inside of 1 month and half, they would make up the amount by (said 朴勝鳳) , selling his body, havent paid in the first instalment of 100 or more shares they have so enthusiastically taken. Worse than that; the two 朴's are at dagger's end. Everything has turned out as predicted to 朴勝鳳, 兪星濬 and 李商在 when they first proposed to start the company; viz: we could never raise ¥1,000,000.00; and if we did we haven't anybody who could manage the money.

43
Poor rest last night on account of bed-bugs.
44
Left Seoul 12:15 p.m. train for Song Do. This dreadful drought is telling not only on the body but also on the mind of people. The wife of second cousin, a unusually steady woman has been suffering from mental disorder for the last three weeks. She suspect everybody as a thief one day; the next day she next day she tries to run out of her room saying that some stranger is entering the room. The serious operation she had undergone last Spring seems to have left her weakened in body as well as well as in mind. So many women telling her she looks unwell etc. must have had a bad effect on her nerves. The Korean seem to think it a high toned politeness to tell a friend that he does not look well.

So far as the Korean residents of 堅志洞 and 安國洞 are concerned, there are neither more nor less reasons today to have the electric car lines between Chong no and the 安國洞 square, than there were, say, 3 years ago. But no sooner the Industrial Bank has built its official residences in 安國洞 than the line is laid. Thus in every sort of improvement, the first and last question with the Japanese authorities is "Will it benefit the Japanese?" and not "Will it benefit the Koreans." If the Koreans get the benefit of any such improvement it is no fault of the Japanese authorities. Take the rail-roads, telegraph and telephone instalments, the reforestation, the harbor improvements, the improvement of country roads etc., this principle of serving the Japanese first holds good in every instance. The Japanese and foreign apologists point to the introduction of modern facilities of transportation and of communication as the great blessings Japan have conferred on the Koreans. The neglect or absence of these improvements will hurt the Japanese infinitely more than the Koreans.

Farmer boys as soon as they taste the luxury of education desert their farms and go for politics, philosophy, economics, sociology, law or anything that will give them a soft living not by the sweat of the brow but by the wagging of the tongue. Who will then till the land by and by? This is certainly a serious question. By the way, the desertion of farms by educated young men seems to be a crying evil in India as well as in Korea. The only difference is that in India the people have other means of livelihood while the Koreans have none. Thanks to the benevolent Japanese rule.

Left Song Do 6 a.m. train for Seoul. Arrived home about 10:30 a.m. Went to the office of 彰文社 to attend the 取締役會. The main questions up for prolonged discussion was the 內容證明 of 朴鵬緖, the former 專務取締役 who had the brass to demand over ¥5,000(00/100) for 報酬 and 手當 and 慰勞金!!!
112
He is a perfect brigand. He actually sealed the safe and the chest of archives declaring that he wouldn't open them unless the Company paid in full the amount he demands. I am simply disgusted with these Koreans―朴容羲, 朴鵬緖, and whole bunch of their likes. 朴勝鳳, who is one of the worst tempered men I have ever seen thinks and insists he can make the magazine 新生命 pay! Pay figs! There is no paying magazine in Korea. The whole business is sickening.
