Rain in the morning. Left Seoul 8:25 a.m. train for Song Do. From 水色 for miles and miles, the rice fields all under water―a disheartening sight. Poor farmers their hearts were scorched with a long drawn drought―then drenched with pitiless flood! Is Heaven hard on the Koreans? But think, just think! Had the rulers of the Yi Dynasty spent less time in reciting Confucian classics and in factional conflicts and more on building roads, bridges, proper dikes and reservoirs we would have been far better off today.

Hear that in taking stock of the goods in the Textile Dept. Mr. Deal discovered a shortage of 7,000 yards of stuff―estimated at ¥6,000.00 or more. R.S.Y. suspects Chang Yong Sup. Mr. D. employs too many young men in his office―young fellows who have given up old notions or standards of honesty and loyalty without having found new ones. To an average Korean young man the old virtues of honesty, loyalty and gratitude are not worth considering. Bolshevism is their religion and Lenin and Trotsky are their gods. But Bolshevism itself can not stand a day without these grand, eternal principles.
