A disastrous earthquake visited the North-Eastern coast of Japan. Casualties nearly 3,000 persons injured of whom 1,535 dead. Of 10,796 houses more or less damaged 2,963 washed out, demolished 1,279. Of course these are very incomplete reports but the catastrophs seems very serious.
14
A few of us gave a farewell supper to Mr. Peters at the Song-Jook Restaurant. He has lived a real missionary life during the last 5 years, wearing Korean dress, eating Korean food and living Korean fashion. He has won the good will of the Korean people but is a black goat among his nationals.
16
5th. Sunday. Bright Biting cold.
17
Seoul home. The Japanese army captured the capital of Jehol Province yesterday morning having completely routed all the Chinese generals who tried to oppose the resolute advance of the victorious islanders.

Seoul home. 11 a.m. Ewha College Commencement exercises. I addressed the graduating class.
33
2 p.m. with Dr. Ryang went to the C.C.C. Commencement exercises. Dr. Ryang gave on "My Philosophy of Life" a very sensible address. He said he has tried to shape his life on the principles contained in or taught by three motoes: (1) "Know thyself" (2) Do unto others as you would have others do unto you". (3) God helps those who help themselves. Dr. Ryang is certainly one of the most lovable characters in Korea I have known.

The Annual Conference of the Central Division or the Central Conference of the Korean Methodist Church began its session at 9 a.m. in the Jung Dong Church. Delegates 300 or more. Say all you may or can and inspite of all the short comings of the Korean Christians, they are certainly incomparably better than any other group of the Koreans in general intelligence and discipline.
48
16th. Thursday. Snow much a.m.
49
Seoul home. From 9 a.m. to 12:30 the second day of the Annual Conference. As expected, Mr. Ryang proves his fitness for the position by his ability and knowledge in presiding over the conference. There is no other Korean who can take his place not only now but for some years yet to come.
50
In a meeting of Committee appointed by the Conference to consider and frame a plan how to raise an endowment fund for the Church, Miss Smith became white with anger or grief or both and said: This talks about self-support and endowment of the Church is a disease to the Church(自給이니 基本金이니 하난 말이 우리 敎會의 큰 病이오) . She believes it is sin to reserve anything; that we ought to live on daily manna.
53
Seoul home. The 3rd day of the Conference. Welcome reception given to the delegates by the Seoul Methodists 3 to 5 p.m. at the Central Y.
54
Dr. Cynn gave the welcome address. I didn't like the tone and manner of his speech―so sulky and long-faced. Evidently he was not at his best. There was not a word of welcome in his speech. He even said that he didn't come to the meeting because there was any honor or glory in the occasion. All this must have been due to the fact that Dr. cynn had lost his father a week or two ago.
56
18th. Saturday. Cloud.
57
Seoul home. Quite a quantity of snow from the early hours of morning to about 3 a.m. Pretty afternoon.

Now that he has to stand the entrance examinations of the First Higher Common School in a few days, we shall not feel easy until he passes the tests successfully.

The wedding ceremony of cousin Chi So's second daughter, 義卿, the bridegroom, being the second son of Dr. Oh Kung Sun, took place about 1 p.m. If he proves as fine a husband as she will as a wife, they will be very happy. She is a beautiful character. God bless them.

Seoul home. With wife took dinner at Dr. Hirst's home. His 69th birthday. Returned home near 9:30. Learned that Allen's wife 閔□姬, whose histeria has of late come nearer to craziness had actually assaulted our cook and said something like, "father-in-law is my real father-in-law, but mother-in-law is not my real mother-in-law etc. etc." These sayings of a half crazy woman have no more responsibility than the rovings of a drunken man. But wife became furious saying that she had made a mistake to have married a man who had children by former wife etc!
