Great floods in the Southern end of South Kyong Sang Do along the banks of the Nak-Dong River are reported.

Messrs. 李□鍾, 李相協, 沈友燮 with the help of Dr. 吳兢善, have started an Association whose four fold object is: (1) Abolishment of Vain Rituals; (2) Promotion of Habits of Frugality: (3) Abolition of Superstition: (4) Spread of Literacy. No same person can object to any of them. Yet the Korean papers stand aloof of the whole movement, their reasons appearing to be: (1) The name of the Association 中央振興協會 has the smack of the local Jin Hung Hoi which the Japanese authorities have organized in every district, the main object beg to teach the people the virtues and duties of putting up flag on national holidays and of paying taxes promptly: (2) So many out and out pro-Japanese men like 曺秉相, 金□演, 李□鍾 etc. are fathering the movement; (3) Where will the money come from to finance the Association?

In the districts through which the great river, Nak-Dong, flows embankments gave away before the over flooding water, submerging them and of cottages, rendering over 2,000 people homeless, clothesless and foodless. This flood disaster is reported to be greater then the flood-record of 乙丑年 of 1925.

Mr. 芮種錫 suggested to me some days ago that we start an Asiatic Association 亞細亞協會. He seems to have been inspired by a Japanese military officer. I told him that one of the Principal objects of such an association would be "Asia for Asians", that, if we Koreans were to start such an organization, everybody would laugh at us saying "You who can't run your own country by yourselves, what right have you to insist running Asia by the Asians".

Seoul home. The Extreme Right conspiracy case against the Government that convulsed the Japanese nation two years ago is still in the hands of procurators. Another plot of like nature was unearthed sometime ago, in Tokyo, its object being the assassination of this Cabinet Ministers and of some prominent figures in financial world. The Japanese nation fed on war from cradle to grave for centuries on centuries are never happy except when they kill or be killed. These wholesale assassination plots actively participated by young men of the Army and Navy will not stop until their object is accomplished. To cool off the boiling blood thirsty temperature of the nation, some great foreign war will be needed. Otherwise a civil war may break out.

Left Seoul 8:45 a.m. with family for Song-Jun Beach. The journey comparatively cool and comfortable-wife standing the trip much easier than she did last year-thanks be unto God. Arrived at the Beach home about 6 p.m., the train 40 minutes later than schedule. Enjoyed the first sea bathing of the year.

Song Jun Beach. To think or believe it is a part of aristocratic dignity to scold, scold, scold, the servants from early morning till late in the night―is one of the most disgusting vices of a Seoul bred women. Perhaps this woman is one of the worst of the tribe. She never gives instructions. She scolds and naggs on and on until her sulphureous temper and tongue are worked up to their unmost degree of violence. She―or they―seem to act on the presumption that servants ought to know intuitively what she thinks and wishes. If she―these two wicked specimens of the rotten Seoul womanhood will only transfer some of their lingual energy to manual work they wouldn't have to scold and scold.

28. 7월 28일

87
28th. Friday. Cloudy―Steamy.

88
Song Jun Beach. With 璋善, left Song Jun 11:11 a.m. for Won-San Song Do Won(松濤園) to see 禮卿 and her sister 義卿. Rain all the way from about 11:30 until 2 p.m. Arriving at Won-San about 1:30 p.m. found everything so dirty―the station waiting rooms, the streets etc. Went out to Song Dc Won Beach in a bus. Fortunately met 吳 the husband of 義卿 half way on the road, who acted our guide. He rather his father, Dr. Oh Kyong Sun, has built a nice little Japanese cottage for his new daughter-in-law in the Japanese section of the beach paying 10 sen per tsubo land rent per year. 義卿, the charming girl gave us good cups of tea and toasted bread. Called on 義卿, cousin 趙 집 in the Korean houses. Returned to Song Jun by 6:35 p.m. train.

29. 7월 29일

90
29th. Saturday. Cloudy―Cool. Calm sea.

91
Song Jun Beach. Too much cold sea bathing. Rain from about 9 p.m.
92
I didn't like Song Do Won(松濤園) . Too dirty, too noisy. In a few years this Song Jun Beach will become that way only on a smaller scale. The enterprizing Japanese will take the pine covered plain and the beach in the name of a lease and make a Japanese bathing resort, with no room for the Koreans. The quietness and natural cleanliness of the place will become an ancient history. But then that will be the fate of all the beauty spots on the beautiful coast of Kang Won Province as soon as the East Coast Line gets finished.

Song Jun Beach. Too cool for sea-bathing for me. Four young men from 通川宅, and two men from Pan Mak village came to thank me for the relief I gave to the starving families last Spring through the efforts of Hyon Dong Wan. They brought two bottle of wine―one of sake and another of Japan-made grape wine plus some cakes and "naing-myon."One of the two from Pan Mak was 73 years old. He said he was laid up three days without anything in the way of food with nothing but certain death in prospect. When my relief came.
