2
1st. Saturday. Beautiful.

3
Seoul home. Entertained three teachers or the 女子師範 to a Chinese supper at the Bong Nai Kwan (蓬萊館) .
4
Pyon Hoon volunteered the gossip yesterday that an anti-Cynn movement is on foot and that its most active manipulators are 卞榮魯, 李寬求, 張澤相 and 白象圭: This Club, they are using is the questionably relation between Cynn and P.I.D. If these fellows were among the crowd who accused the unfortunate woman before Christ, they would certainly have had the cheek to throw the first stones at the woman.
5
However, it is a fact that Cynn is a very unpopular man among young men of his age. His exceedingly unattractive―positively impolite―way he behaves himself has alienated the good will of many who admire his ability.

Spent the afternoon at Pu-Am Jung(傅巖亭) . Dr. Kim Hellen, Miss Pak Maria and few others from the Ewha College, as the guests of Jung Kwang Hyon and my Mary had a picnic with us. They seemed to enjoy the fresh air and quietness of the place. Returned home about 7. Little 珽, 瑛, 寶 liked the outing very much.

11
3rd. monday. Cloudy a.m.

Seoul home. Papers have it that an intense and bitter anti-Jew movement is raging in Germany. Pickets are placed in the front of all Jewish stores to keep customers away. This in the land of Luther and of Einstein.

24
A large attendance. The topic for discussion was an "Appraisal of the Re-appraisal of missions" or of rethinking missions by Dr. Cynn. His way of expressing his views was so diffused and so quasi-scholarly that one could hardly catch the point he was driving at.

37
Attended a regular meeting of the Board of Directors of the Japanese Y. Met there Mr. Saito, the Genl. Secretary of the Japanese National Council. The Japanese Y. has the backing of the business men and of officials. For instance, the Bank of Chosen has agreed to send a bunch of its young clerks to a Chinese language class in the Y. with the tuitions all guaranteed by the Bank. Lately a net income of 1,200 yen was cleared by the Japanese Y. by exhibiting a popular film. The Korean Y. has absolutely no such backing.

We were told by Mr. Ikeda (池田淸) , the Director of the Police Dept. That the subscriptions toward the fund reached ¥1,600,000 or more than 5 times the sum which the promotors had hoped to raise when they started the movement 6 months ago. Cash payment has reached six hundred thousand yen. An entire island has been bought at price of ¥150,000.00 Buildings and equipment will be put up as soon as possible for the accommodation of 4,000 patients―which is however, only about 1/3 of the estimated number of lepers in Korea.

The Japanese apologists for the new State of Manchuria assert in season and out of season the Manchukuo is founded on 王道 or "Kingly Way" and that its laws and policies will be so shaped as to realize the high ideals of "Wang-taw." Now what is "Wang-taw". Mencius, the most eloquent exponent of Wangtaw said 22 or more centuries ago―"To make people live in comfort, and die in peace is the beginning of "Wang-taw". To a prince who asked him how he(Mencius) could make visit profitable to his Kingdom, the sage answered "Why do you say profit? There are also Benevolence and Righteousness―If princes and people vie with each other in the pursuit of profit only, no Kingdom can de saved". During the last 22 centuries no state has yet appeared in China or the East where these high ideals of "Kingly Way" have been carried out in practice. The whole trouble with the Kingly way business is that you must have a success of good Kings and wise ministers of the higher kind to carry out the "Kingly" principles. That's simply impossible. Will Manchukuo succeed better?

Seoul home. Im Yung Bin 任榮彬 used to be the secretary of Mr. Wasson. Thanks to the kind offices of Mr. Wasson, Im went through the theological course in the Methodist University in Texas. The young fellow returned to Seoul sometime last autumn. Naturally enouge he was invited to lead a Chapel Service at the C.C.C. one day. To the astonishment of all he spoke on divorce, saying that Christ made a mistake in placing any limit to divorce even adultery. In conclusion he said "You may forget everythings I have said but this one thing you must remember: namely: adultery is an act of charity. If it is an act of charity to give food to the hungry and drink to the thirsty it is certainly an act of charity to give a satisfaction to a person who starves or thirsts in sex gratification."
67
This fellow must have been fed on judge Lindy's companionate marriage theory. In an article Im wrote for the New Life: He said something like this. "O God, give me employment, I will pawn heaven and eternal life. Nay let heaven and eternal life tumble into hell only give me employment". What a talk from a theologie!

22. 4월 22일

75
22nd. Saturday. Pretty.

76
Seoul home. 5:30 p.m. about 70 or more Christians gave a welcome supper at the Myung Wol Kwan in honor of Dr. and Mrs. Hardie and Mrs. Bunker. The food was wretched. It's a well known fact that restaurant people don't welcome Christian customers whom they have nicknamed "Amen party". When Church folks entertain anybody no wine or smoke or dancing girls are required. They eat up everything on the table leaving the plates clean―so that the restaurants suffer loss first by being enable to water their bills on wine and women and secondly by having no food left for the next entertainment.

23. 4월 23일

81
24th. Monday. Cloudy a.m.

Seoul home. Entertained Dr. yang and his American wife of Hawaii and Mr. Carl, the editor of a Los Angeles Paper to a Korean lunch at our home. Dr. Yang and his wife have shown themselves such hospitable friends to every Korean who touch Hawaii either to or from America that they have a lot of men and women in Seoul who are only too glad to see them here.
83
Mr. Carl, the Los Angeles editor is a typical American restless and impatient. He cussed the Chosen Hotel for not keeping clerks and boys who speak English well enough to understand him etc. etc.

Seoul home. Sometime ago the Choong-Ang-Il-Po(中央日報) published a pitiful story about 21 families in the village of Pan Mak-Ri (板幕里) in the district of Tong Chun(通川) who had nothing to eat, even a corns for three or four days and that they are absolutely hopeless and helpless in the face of certain death from starvation. Hyon Dong Wan so moved by the story that he begged me to let him go and do something for the poor people. I promised him ¥100.00 for the immediate relief. Hyon came this morning and reported that he found the 21 families living in hovels in a valley several li long altogether shut away from other villages. He had to walk 70 li from a little station. The poor folks didn't live in a cluster but 2 or 3 huts here and there. The sight of the starving people was enough to melt the hardest heart. He gave ¥4.00 to each household with 4 or 5 members. They were simply dumb with joy and told Hyon that they could manage to live three months with ¥4.00! They live on a corns and potatoes. The latter crop failed last Autumn, hence, the story. The authorities of 通川 district which levied actually ¥2,080.00 from the poverty stricken 踏錢面 to help construct the Ko-juh-harbor for the benefit of the Japanese wouldn't lift a finger to help the 板幕里 people.

Seoul home. This being an anniversay of the birthday of H.J.M. the Emperor, the Gov. General gave a garden party on the Old Palace ground from 2 p.m.
100
From 4 p.m. attended the 11th Annual Meeting of the Chang Moon Sa(彰文社) . The company was conceived in sin, born in sin, carried on in sin by men like 尹, 朴, 兪, 李. This den of thieves cost me ¥60,000.00. When I transferred the business to Mr. Ja Rok by selling to him and his colleagues @50 sen per share about 2,500 shares for which I had to pay ¥ 12.50 per share, the concern was free of debt. They began the work with a clean state. But business has gone from bad to worse and the press is worrying the very life out of Mr. Koo. He had to borrow money at the rate of ¥6.00 per ¥100.00 a day during the last year just to keep the press going! Userers are certainly heartless dogs―to charge 360% on a loan.

30. 4월 30일
