Seoul home. General Iwasa, the Commander of the Korean Gendarmes gave a lunch at his home in honor of Mr. Pak Choon Kum and his wife. A score of Korean guests representing various walks of life in Seoul were present. This Pak is a remarkable man of his kind. He says he went to Japan 20 or more years ago as a coolie with ￥36.00 in all . He had no education except that he had read 千字 when he was a child. By sheer personal courage and horse sense he has won himself a name as a pro-Japanese Korean. He is the only Korean M.P. in the Japanese Diet.

Genl. Iwasa has published a book named 內地人反省資錄 “An Appeal to the Japanese for Reflection" In it he, through his subordinates had gathered about 70―exactly 68―authenticated stories of the insulting acts or words which the Japanese residents in Korea have been in the habit of heaping on the Koreans. The Genl. heartily deprecates such conduct on the part of the power―intoxicated Japanese of the baser sort. I certainly feel grateful to Mr. Iwasa for his samurai-like spirit. Yet until we Koreans catch up with the Japanese in economic and intellectual status, the Japanese will never cease insulting us. Quicker and surer way of curing the Japanese of the superior complex disease will be that Koreans learn to fight. A Japanese will think twice before he insults a Korean in words or acts, when only when he knows he will be hit back in good measure.

Seoul home. Supper at the home of Mr. 朴榮喆 at 6 p.m. Messrs. 呂運亨, 宋鎭禹, 曺晚植, 申興雨, 韓圭□, 方應謨, 吳兢善, 朴熙道, besides myself. Mr. 朴 has an interesting collection of the calligraphs of notable Koreans both ancient and modern. Returned home 10:30

By the 1:05 p.m. gasoline car, wife, 文姬, 光鉉, took our little ones, 寶, 瑛, 琦 and □嬋 and 雄 to C.C.C. to have them undergo second injection of anti-diptheria medicine by Dr. Smith. The afternoon so windy and chilly until 3 that we enjoyed staying in the house of Mr. and Mrs. Choi Soon Ju until 3:30. Dr. and Mrs. Smith were very kind to us.

Seoul home. Lunch at the home of Mr. Han Sang Ryong at 12 m. to meet Mr. 町田□次郞, a specialist on labor questions in Japan. Many of the director(局長) grade of the Gov.-Genl were present. Of the Korean side Messrs. 宋鎭禹, 催麟, 魚擇, 趙根□, 申錫麟, 金明濬, were present. Mr. Han is a shrewd and strong man. He has succeeded in winning the graces of the influential Japanese in and out of the Government. He knows how to do it. He had the powerful backing of Mr. Yi Wan Yong to start his career―then he wrecked the Han Sung Bank to buy the favors of the Japanese rulers of Korea. An example: He said the other day Genl. Iwasa in Korean dress proper for winter. He had a summer suit made in a night and sent it to the General.

Seoul home. 3 p.m. went to the Chosen Hotel to attend the Promoter's Meeting(發起總會) of Tourist Association whose object is to make tourists feel at home in Korea. Like all other co-operative activities where Japanese and Koreans are invited to work together for a common objects, the Koreans are made to feel that they have nothing to do in the affair except to help footing the bill. An Korean proverb says 굿이나 보고 이나 먹지 "We have nothing to do but to see the sorcerers perfrom and then let us eat the cake". We may modify the proverb thus: "We have nothing to do but to supply the cake and to see the sorcerers perform and eat".

Seoul home. From 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. attended an Economic Conference called by the Governor General to meet at the No. l conference room(第一會議室) in the Government General Building. The object of the Conference is to exchange views with, and hear the opinions of the leaders in farming, manufacturing, commercial, mining, fishing, forestry, industries. Of the 44 men invited only 9 were Koreans. Since the opinions of the Koreans, good or bad, would no more affect the fixed policy of the Gov. G. their presence was rather ornamental than useful. As for the Japanese they were all men of power in the lines of business they represented. I simply filled a seat.

Seoul home. A little rain began about 10 a.m. turned into real good refreshing rain from about 11. From 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. attended the Economic Conference. As soon as the Conference closed I hurried to 傅巖亭 where wife and little ones with 文姬 and 光鉉 had gone to entertain a few C.C.C. friends. A most welcome rain the whole afternoon. Mr. and Mrs. 兪億兼 were among the friends invited.

This morning at the Economic Conference I just for the sake of saying something, expressed my wish that in Korea at least machine shouldn't be allowed to displace altogether human labor in industry. In the matter of division of crops between land owners and tenant farmers the ta-jak or half and half method should be universally adopted until some better method is discovered. Then I called the attention of the powers-that-be to the fact that the vile vituperations of the vile woman Mrs. Bird Bishop against the Koreans―whom she characterized as liars, thieves etc.―were unnecessarily quoted in the little pamphlet which the Government General had distributed under the title "What Has Our Country Done in Korea?" Since there are Foreign writers who have said kindly things about the Koreans and since the quotation of the vile woman's passage was unnecessary. It should be struck out of the pamphlet.

Seoul home. Papers report that in Berlin, truck-loads of un German books were burnt at the great public squares. The famous Einstein has been deprived of his citizenship and his property confiscated because he happens to be a Jew. Incredible! Nearly 23 centuries ago the great Emperor of a unified China -秦始皇- burned libraries of Confucian classics and butchered Confucian scholars, hoping thereby he could perpetuate his dynasty to 10 thousand generations. His dynasty came to an end soon after his death. After annexation of Korea by Japan, the new masters of Korea cut car loads of anti-Japanese or patriotic books and pamphlets into bits to throw them all over the muddy streets of Seoul. That didn't and hasn't and will never make Koreans love Japan any better. Nor will Hitler and his crowd succeed in eradicating un-German thought in the Jewish heart or in the German heart either, by burning all the books in Germany. On the meanness of human nature!

Seoul home. A little rain in the early morning. From 2 to 6 p.m. the first field day for home keeping women(家庭夫人大運動會) was celebrated at the Jang-Choon Dan Park. The program was arranged by the members of the Women's Vocational Association(職業婦人會) . Mr. 呂運亨, the President of the Choong-Ang-Il-Po Co. took an enthusiastic part in the affair. Wife and our little children went to the show.

Marquis Pak Yung Hyo invited a group of men whose boys are now attending the First Higher Common School to a supper to discuss the ways and means of raising ￥20,000⁰⁰ to enlarge the athletic ground of the school. None of the men present seemed to like the idea but all felt that the parents must do something toward the fund just for the sake of their boys.

These two women hate each other like poison. Yet they are remarkably alike in their love of vain show; their absolute selfishness; their airings of yangbanism; their heartlessness to servants; their excessive lust for self-ease. They emulate each other in everything that is mean and vain. This woman who complains of aches of every description from morn until p.m. becomes furious when a servant is sick―of stomach ache for instance. She who spends 50% of the time in sleeping scolds and cusses the little girls who shows signs of sleepiness. These women who knows or ought to know, how hard it is to get servants now-a-days never hesitate to fire a servant on the slightest provocation. They multiply servants just to promote their self-ease. Indeed, if their ideal of self-ease(便한 것) , their summum bonum of life were to be realized as they want it, they must need go to sleep six feet under the sod. Where did they get these notions of happiness of life? From the rotten aristocracy who monopolized the political powers of the Yi Dynasty and the Middle Caste who monopolized the exclusive foreign trade with China and Japan.
