Coal risen to ￥18 or ￥19 per ton. Mr Gregg, when I repeatedly reminded him to buy coal while we can get it ￥14.50 per ton, said Mr. Koons was making arrangement to get coal cheap. Mr. G. said last Saturday "Leave it to me". This morning when he heard that the coal has gone up, he felt very bad about it. Last year we could have gotten coal at ￥9.00 per ton, but Brockman told me that Mr. Bun Hai was to get his coal at ￥8.00 per ton. A week later B. told me that ￥10.00… Japanese did some lack on…… Americans think too much of themselves.

Mr. Hugh Miller just returned from furlough tells me he saw my brother (1) 吉龍 was in a Quaker school―religiously all good but academically insufficient; (2) He had as much money as or more then he needs but wants more; (3) He is thoroughly comfortable but doesn't seem to study hard enough. Mr. H. says in spite of the war the living expenses in England cheaper than in U.S.A.; that there are not many English boys who get much as 吉龍 gets to go school on; that may an English family live well on income no larger than what 吉龍 gets. Steamy heat―Rain in the night.

As I passed the shoe-store just south of the 廣通橋 a woman accosted me. She was in a pitiable condition as to dress, etc. and said that she had just been driven out by her husband who is living with his concubine, etc. All the while I noticed a little child sitting by her with innocent wide open eyes. What a picture of the sufferings of the innocent on acc't of the sins of men and women. The sight of the poor little child wring my heart with sympathy and pity. I gave her ￥1.00.

Bishop Kilgo preached in the Su Pyo Kyo Church. I interpreted for him. A fine sermon it was.

At 2:30 p.m. the Birdman Smith gave a little talk in the Underwood's Church. I interpreted for him. At 3:30 Smith talked in the Y.M.C.A. Auditorium to a packed house. When he got through, Dr. Avison asked him to talk to a big crowd who are eagerly waiting outside of the building. Smith consenting we emptied room of the first crowd, and filled it the second time nearly as packed. The talk was simple. But what impressed every one most favorably was the blushing modesty of the young man. His immense success didn't seem to have spoiled him. He neither smokes nor drinks.

Pastor 鄭春洙 is decidedly dissatisfied with the exclusive methods and manners of missionaries. He said to Mr. 金 and me, "If the missionaries persist on their policy of exclusiveness ―not consulting Koreans on church policy and education, etc.―there will be a church revolution soon." On the conference floor 鄭 showed signs of resistance whenever he had chance.
