With Mr. 李商在 went to 大田 to meet Dr. Mott and his party. Had to spend several hours in Tai-jun. Visited the home of the 宗孫 of 宋太菴.

As everywhere else, the important sections of the town of 大田 are in the hands of the Japanese. The Koreans are picking up what leftovers there may be in the trade of the place―and the devil knows well enough that the Japanese don't leave much over.

Returned to Seoul with Dr. Mott and party.

20th. Monday. Cloudy. Very cold. 34˚ then 30˚―then 20℉. by 11 a.m. Northwest wind most of the day with snow flakes flying.

Lunch at 總督官邸 at 12:30 in honor of Dr. Mott. 6:30 p.m. Korean supper given in honor of Dr. Mott, Prince Pak, Count 宋, Viscount 李載◉, 李夏榮, and 李 present. Dr. Mott spoke to a packed house. Dr. R. of Holland who is traveling with Dr. Mott said to me: "The Japanese talk about the good relations now welding the two peoples of Korean and Japanese into one in the face of the teachings of history. No one race will always consent to remain in subjection to another race but sooner or later, they will shake off the bondage. Look at Poland, Slovakia, Ireland, Serbia and other Balkan States. The Japanese seem to be blind to these facts. Are they self-deceived or deceiving?

Thick snow piled up on roofs and street corners―wretched muddy streets. Worshipped at 宗橋 Church. Mr. Hodkin, a friend missionary from West China preached a good sermon on the triumph and subsequent depression of Prophet Elijah. He contrasted the means of violence which the Prophet used to build up the Kingdom of God with the message of love and forgiveness which Christ died for the overcome the evil. The late war with its windstorm of patriotism, its fire of destruction, its earthquake of social upheaval have failed to bring peace and happiness to the world as men hoped they would. We are yet to learn the Christ's means of conquering the world is better than that of force and love is mightier than hatred. God is stronger than devil.

The Korean yangbans used to affect a great contempt for money. It was regarded an insult to talk about money with a gentleman. Many an old man prided himself on the fact that he had never put a cash in his pocket. All that was foolish affection. but now money is having its contempt for the yangbans. Everybody is hard up for money. Wherever I go or whomsoever I meet money is the first thing to talk about. People, old and young, strangers and old acquaintances come to see me now for friendship but to beg money, money, money! This is certainly money worship all right!

Mr. Y. "Well, to you who have to spend ￥15,000.00 one thousand yen more wouldn't make so much difference." Now this is the favorite argument of the heartless and thoughtless beggars. To beg was after all a necessity before but it is regarded as a privilege now.
