1. 6월 1일

2
1st. Friday. Beautiful. Warm.

3
Seoul home. Candler tells me that Dr. Ludlow thinks it may be possible to treat C's finger without further operation.
4
Pastor Ryang tells me that when Dr. Byron Koo left Song Do for Pyong Yang, Dr. Kate of the Ivy Hospital actually deducted so much a day for Dr. Koo's absence from his half month's salary. Dr. Koo was so indignant that he told him(Dr. Kate) to keep the entire amount―which Dr. Kate did! If the foreign doctors in charge of the Hospital do not treat Korean doctors better, they will lose all bright young men.

2. 6월 2일

6
2nd. Saturday. Beautiful. Warm.

7
Seoul home. The other day when I told Mr. Snyder how Japanese were rapidly dispossessing the Koreans of farms―the only means of living now left to the latter, he said "Why the Koreans can buy raw materials from the Japanese and devote themselves to industry―farms are not as profitable as manufactures." This remark reminded me of the naive saying of a french queen who, when told the people were starving, asked why they didn't eat cakes!

3. 6월 3일

9
3rd. Sunday. Pretty. Cool.

10
Seoul home. There is something comforting in the Darwinism theory that man has descended from the Chimpanzee; we can easier be reconciled with the unspeakable meanness of human nature than if we believed in the doctrine that man is made after the image of God.

4. 6월 4일

12
4th. Monday. Beautiful. Warm.

13
Took lunch with wife and children at Y. restaurant. Left Seoul for Song Do with 璋善 per 4:44 p.m. train. Arrived home about 9 p.m. Alien tells me that the authorities(police) insist on surrounding the dairy compound with a plank fence instead of bob-wire fence, though the Provincial Office had instructed Alien either to use bob-wire or plank for the fence. These Japanese bureaucrats are simply horrid in their efforts to keep Korean out of any industry which a Japanese may profitably exploit.

5. 6월 5일

15
5th. Tuesday. Beautiful. Warm.

16
Song Do home. Office as usual. Hot and dry.

6. 6월 6일

18
6th. Wednesday. Cloudy. Hot.

19
Song Do home. Office as usual. Steamy. Farmers are wishing for rain very much.
20
The Southward Primary School teachers seven in all have combined to expel the head teacher, Mr. 許興龍. Not that 許 is guilty of anything worth expulsion but because the young fellows who had their own way before find the supervision of the head teacher irksome. Koreans are past masters in forming factions camouflaging their meanness and selfishness with fine phrases of virtue and of public spiritfulness.

7. 6월 7일

22
7th. Thursday. Cloudy.

23
Song Do home. Office as usual. About 7:30 a.m. a little shower―then clear sky―very tantalizing.
24
The Methodist missionaries who don't know where they may go next year should make no promises of help to the Korean people of a district where the Bishop may have placed him this year. Mr. Stokes while in 春川 district promised generous financial help to Mr. 南宮檍's school and the 光宣學校 in 洪川. When he left 春川 last year, his successor, Mr. Branum, had to go back entirely or partly on the irresponsible promises. Thus through no fault―except the carelessness―of Mr. Stokes, the mission, the religion itself is placed in a bad light among the Koreans―both believers and non-believers.

8. 6월 8일

26
8th. Friday. Pretty. Very hot.

27
Left Song Do 11:55 a.m. train for Seoul. The young teachers of the Southward Primary School persist in anti-Huh strike. 金聖烈 told me that the teachers of the Northward Primary School have or are planning to join the Southward fellows in the strike. Too bad. If I could get a dozen good teachers at once I would let all these fellows go. That will do them and others more good than keeping them. But where am I to get the teachers. I can't afford turn loose over 1,000 little children from their studies for 1 and half mouth―1500 months! I told 金聖烈 to get 許興龍 to consent to serve as ordinary teacher instead of being the head teacher. I understand the conspirators would accept this concession.

9. 6월 9일

29
9th. Saturday. Beautiful. Hot.

30
Seoul home. Had a little rain last night.
31
These teachers, twenty young men who profess to be Christians combine to sacrifice the interest of a thousand innocent little children to the gratification of their personal spite and jealousy against the head teacher. That's what makes me pessimistic about the future of the Korean people. They have no sense of unselfish service. Where there are a number of Koreans you are sure to find factions ready to fly at each other's throat quarreling over private rights and interests neglecting greater common welfare. In Shang Hai in Russia, in America, in Manchuria.

10. 6월 10일

33
10th. Sunday. Cloudy. Steamy.

34
Seoul home. Worshipped at 宗橋 Church. A vigorous shower at noon.
35
The other day in the car I heard an old man advise his friend to buy as much rice as he could and hold it for a month or two. "In the 7th moon" said he, a 小斗 of rice will fetch ¥2.00." Mr. 白雲祥 tells me that in 牙山 and 天安 farmers predict that in the coming Autumn the rice would sell for ¥20.00 per bag. I wonder what is the basis of their calculation.

11. 6월 11일

37
11th. Monday. Cloudy. Warm.

38
Left Seoul with 璋善 12:15 p.m. train for Song Do. Two or three spasmodic showers―just enough to tantalize the rain thirsty farmers.

12. 6월 12일

40
12th. Tuesday. Cloudy. Cool.

41
Song Do home. Office as usual.
42
Mr. DeCamp, thinks the reason why the Koreans surround their homes with high walls―which the Americans don't do―is that the former haven't had Christianity giving them security of life and property. If the good old man's argument is true then the Japanese are the most Christian because their homes, even hotels, have nothing but paper partitions between the rooms, while the Americans and Europeans are the greatest heathens because the padlock has reached among them the highest perfection.

13. 6월 13일

44
13th. Wednesday. Bright. Warm.

45
Song Do home. Office as usual.

14. 6월 14일

47
14th. Thursday. Pale sun. Steamy.

48
Seoul home. Left Song Do 9:05 a.m. train for Seoul.
49
Commemoration of the 30 years of great and varied service which Dr. Avison has rendered to the Korean people. All the grades of Korean society was represented. There is no other foreigner in Korea who could have brought together such a universal appreciation from all classes of the Korean people. Pity the program was not more carefully prepared. A life like that of Dr. Avison is worthwhile to have been lived.

15. 6월 15일

51
15th. Friday. Pale. Steamy.

52
Seoul home. Signed a 委任狀 authorizing the change of name. 名義書換 for the 100 shares of the(奉天) 協濟公司 which I subscribed a year ago but which I didn't pay up. Messrs. 朴泳孝, 李允用, 趙鎭泰, 金漢奎 also subscribed but haven't paid.

16. 6월 16일

54
16th. Saturday. Bright. Hot.

55
Sent the 委任狀 of yesterday to Mr. 張斗鉉.
56
Seoul home. All the symptoms of rain have gone and another sunny and dry hot day.

17. 6월 17일

58
17th. Sunday. Bright. Hot.

59
Seoul home. Worshipped at 宗橋 Church. Invited by Miss Esther Kim to lunch at Ladies' home. Her brother, 金裕淳, Mr. and Mrs. Ryang were also present. Esther is a bright girl. She has been living for the last two years with the American ladies in their home. Her position must be awkward to say the least.
60
This morning the Nor. M.E. people had a big tent meeting on the 培材 Athletic ground. The tent however only canopied the platform on which the Bishop and some of the notable sat while the big congregation were made to sit on bare ground with nothing between them and the scorching sun. Just before the service began shout arose demanding the taking down of the canopy over the platform―which had to be done―and which naturally spoiled the service.

18. 6월 18일

22nd. Friday.Fine. Hot.

75
Seoul home. My 季嫂 the wife of 致旺 had to undergo an operation for 痔疾 at Severance Hospital.

23. 6월 23일

77
23rd. Saturday. Fine. Hot.

78
Seoul home. Yi Sang Choon from Song Do came and told me that the boys, 140 in all, who work half day in the Textile kept and study half day in the school had struck from the noon of last Thursday. One of their nine demands is the dismissal or 金壽天 a young fellow who has been playing a sort of autocrat under Mr. Deal. There is no doubt that the little Kim is too conceited and impudent. He is responsible for much of strained relation between the Textile Dept. Staff and the Song Do High School faculty. The Annual Meeting of the Central Y. from 4 p.m. to 6. All passed off quietly.

24. 6월 24일

80
24th. Sunday. Parching sun. Very hot.

81
Left Seoul with 璋善 and 恩姬 for Song Do per 6:50 a.m. train. Arrived home about 10:30 a.m. Worshipped at the Chapel
82
Today is the 돌 birthday of 鳳求. God bless the child; may he grow to be a strong man in the Lord!
83
Rather cloudy a.m. but brilliant afternoon. So dry and hot. The drought is dangerously prolonged.
84
In regard to the strike Mr. Deal insists that the boys should individually come to him and apologize. This the strikers refuse to do lest their leaders might be singled out. There is the dead lock.

25. 6월 25일

86
25th. Monday. Fine. Hot.

87
Song Do home. Office as usual. 8:30 a.m. addressed the Textile students, trying to persuade them to return to work. They positively refused to do so on the ground that Mr. Deal had insulted the whole Korean race by telling them that the Korean people can't be patient for 5 minutes; that on Thursday night the steam was raised to the highest temperature or pressure with hoses ready to be sprayed on the strikers in case they attacked the factory; the police was called in to terrorize the boys, All efforts seemed to be futile on the part of the faculty. The boys stuck to their position. We had to give them their return home expenses about 5 p.m. Through the mediation of the Y.M.C.A. boys I had one more chance to speak to the boys. Mr. Deal was generous enough to take back what he had said about the Korean people and resigned the boys who apologized in turn. All's well that ends well! Praise God!

26. 6월 26일

89
26th. Tuesday. Fine, Hot.

90
Song Do home. The Textile boys' strike is over. Justifiable or not, they managed the strike very business like. Deal or rather his over conceited subordinates did their best to separate the Textile Dept. from the general administration of the Higher School. The strike has proved their folly. On the other hand, the teachers of the Higher School, regarded the Textile Dept. as an entirely foreign part from the Song Do High School. Both sides must mend their ways and make the Textile Dept. an essential part of the Higher School. We are all wise after events. God grant we may learn the lesson to the profit of all.

27. 6월 27일

92
27th. Wednesday. Fine. Hot.

93
Left Song Do 9:05 a.m. train for Seoul with mother, sister and 璋善. Very hot.
94
Pastor 金弼秀 wants me to lend him ¥3,000.00. What right has he to ask me for such a large sum? Once I lent him ¥150.00 trusting to his honor. He never even mentioned the matter in the way of apology for not returning the money. While I was sick for a whole month that year in Song Do, this Reverend gentleman, as the religious director of the Central Y. didn't even drop me a card. He actually came to Song Do on some business but didn't think it worth while to call on me in the hospital. This man actually came to see me at home in Song Do to demand ¥3,000.00! I told him I would let him have it if he could give me some substantial assurance that I would have the money back on the date to be fixed.

28. 6월 28일

96
28th. Thursday. Fine. Hot.

97
Seoul home. While Mr. Frank Brockman was with us, I didn't realize how much I appreciated his friendship. But since he left Seoul I feel decidedly lonesome. Whenever a prominent foreign visitor came to the town Frank almost always tried to arrange an interview between him and some Koreans to give the Korea side of the situation. Frank has been undoubtedly one of the best and sincerest friends we have. His charming wife always seconded his efforts. God bless them.

29. 6월 29일

99
29th. Friday. Rain. Steamy.

100
Seoul home. Welcome rain from about 11:30 a.m. all day.

30. 6월 30일

102
30th. Saturday. Cloudy. Cool and steamy alternatively.

103
Seoul home. Wife for the last four days, has been in one of her hellish fits of ill humor. Nobody has done or said anything to her. Yet she rages against mother, we and everybody else. I haven't said a word― knowing well it is only fist language that can make her understand. Since I can't indulge in that kind of argument, I have to bear with her as patiently as I can. This silent mental suffering is giving me a headache. Great God, I would gladly see her leave me and mine―go wherever she wants. Yet she is too wise to go―for where will she find another man like me who would be so patient with her abominations! For the sake of our precious children, I say nothing. This, how ever, encourages her to be as perverse as a demon can be.
