Seoul home. Life is warfare. Hence the qualities which are essential to the success of a soldier are essential to success in all the walk of life. What are then these qualities? Vigilance, fearlessness; thorough-ness in planning and promptness in action; habits of discipline of co-operation and of command and obedience; a high and sensitive sense of honor. The pity is that no nation or race has acquired these qualities except through wars. Thus war-like-ness is the basis of all greatness, national as well as individual. Of course the instinct of warlikeness has been abused―but then what other instinct of passion or system hasn't man abused?

Warlikeness as well as peace-loving-ness should be rationalized to be of any benefit to man. Too much-irrational-warlikeness ruins a nation as we see in the bellicose Spanish-American States while too much-irrational-peace-loving-ness wrecks a nation as it has done to the Chinese and the Korean Kingdoms.

Norman Angell's book "The Great Illusion" is a wonderful reading in favor of peace but it doesn't change my opinion that all warlike nations are not necessarily great; but all great nations are necessarily war-like.

Had 白南奭 to take lunch with me. After lunch, with 白, Allen, took the 2:45 p.m. train to 新村. Paid a visit to Mrs. 任用弼 and then went to the foreign cemetery to pay my respect to my Angel Darling's tomb. Returned to Mr. Paik's home about 4:30 p.m. thoroughly tired. Had a nice supper. When I complimented Mrs. Paik for the abundance of the dishes provided for the supper saying that they were enough for a hundred guests, the sweet little hostess quickly answered: "Your honorable presence is of more worth to us than hundred ordinary guests." It was certainly a clever remark. Returned to Seoul 9:30.

The drought which began last August has continued all through the winter up until now. In Song Do itself wells fail to supply enough of drining water. Farmers are in great anxiety.

A month ago the Korean conductors of the Seoul Electric Street-Car Co., struck. After days of haggling with the Co. authorities over certain demands, the whole affair ended in a Fisco, landing a few of the leaders of the strike in prison. So far nothing out of the ordinary. The other day for about 65 new conductors to be recruited, there were 1,000(one thousand) applicants! Now, the senselessness of the strike mongers! Their idea seems to be this: The Americans and English have strikes; therefore we Koreans must have strikes just to be up-to-date! What's use of striking when there are nearly 16 men ready to step in for every vacancy?

An extra of the 東亞日報 reports that last night a colision took place between the police and the delegates of the "All Korea Mass Movement" 全朝鮮民衆運動 who tried to have a procession singing "Red" songs with Red banners etc. Now what puzzles me most is: why did the Japanese police authorities allow these delegates, hundreds of them, together from all parts of the country, to hold their congress, so called? The Korean paper have been full of the accounts of the preparations for the congress or 大會 last few days. The police could easily have stopped the whole business by timely warning. Why did they, the police, wait until the very eve of the meeting(the meeting was to be held today) .

Seoul home. 4:30 p.m. attended the tea party given to the large member of Japanese and Koreans and foreigners by Dr. 水野鍊太郞, a former 政務總監 at the Chosen Hotel. Dr. 水野, as was expected, gave a long talk on the prosperity of Korea, the success of Baron Saito's administration etc. The present Administrative Chief responded now praising what meritorious record Dr. 水野 had made as the 政務總監. Then the foreign guests, under the lead of Dr. Smith, sang Auld lang syne. So far all right. No Korean seemed inclined to say anything. I was asked to say something of Mr. 白寅基 but I didn't feel equal to such a delicate task when there were Marquis 朴泳孝, Viscount 尹德榮. Finally Mr. 朴 stood up and said "Let us drink to the health of Dr. 水野!”

Seoul home. The third day of the Foot Ball Meet. The final contest between 儆信 and 培材 resulted in the victory of the latter team. The improved and improving spirit of sportsmanship in Korea was apparent in the Meet. There was no ugly scenes of quarrel throughout the whole program.
