Seoul home. For the months of March and April the right hand was bandaged and the right arm was slung by a band over the shoulder. I have just recovered the use of the right hand last few days. Yet the right arm can't be used as used to be. (This written in after I could handle my pen) .

Seoul home. 全鮮庭球大會 began 12 morning. Received a telegram from 定州 bearing the news that Mr. 李昇薰 had passed away early this morning. He came to see me on the 15th April to borrow ¥200.00 for his "self-supporting farm". He seemed in good health then. Well, a real man has gone. When I expressed my hope that he might live 20 years longer, he said that he couldn't hope that much but that if he could live 10 years longer he would see his school firmly established. He seemed to expect to live at least 10 more years. But he died only 25 days after our conversation. Blessed are they that expect not, for they shall not be disappointed!
29
10th. Saturday. Bright. Pleasant.
30
Seoul home. The second day of 庭球大會 1 p.m. a large number of men more or less connected with education etc. gathered at the 朝鮮敎育協會 rooms to discuss the best way to show our respect to the last remains of Mr. 李昇薰. It was decided to give him a 社會葬. I didn't approve of it; but the question was rather delicate, involving as it does, the sectional sentiments. The element, want to give equal honors to 李昇薰 as were given to 李商在. All vanity but one can underestimation. The 西北 people feel about such things. A committee of 13 was appointed to arrange the details of the funeral service.
32
11th. Sunday. Bright. Pleasant.
33
Seoul home. Lunch at 江戶川, having been invited by Mr. 宋鎭禹. Besides me there were present Messrs. 申興雨, 安在鴻, 兪億兼, 白寬洙 and Miss Helen Kim―an I.P.R. lunch given by Mr. 宋.
35
12th. Monday. Lovely. Warm.
36
Seoul home. The police very nervous about the 社會葬, so called, to be given to Mr. 李昇薰. Though funeral services to be allowed within the confines of the city of Seoul, I was called up by the 本町警察署 to apologize for having published a notice in the Korean papers informing the public that the 永訣式 is to be held at 訓練院, without having first gotten the police permit. Of course I didn't know anything about the notice but since the fool committee had given the notice in my name, I had to apologize for it!
37
Mr. Cynn left Seoul for America tonight.
39
13th. Tuesday. Beautiful. Hot
40
Seoul home. Real Summer has come.
41
The Spring with its flowers came and went without my being able to enjoy it. I was sick with influenza for the greater part of the month of February. I lost the sense of taste and of smell then and I have not recovered it yet. Then on the 23rd February I crushed the end of my little finger of the right hand. Having the whole hand bandaged for nearly 20 days, the fingers have become so stiff that I am still unable to use my right hand with ease. Rains, too, spoiled the flowers this Spring.
43
14th. Wednesday. Sun. Hot.
44
Seoul home. Our precious 珽善 has his baby lingo. He calls me 맙부. Mother 엄마야, sister 온야, auto 위야. Dog 비비, apples 와와, shoes 네네, chestnut 맘, riksha . There or outside 외. Clothes=, insects 매미.

49
16th. Friday. Sun with cloud on and off. Hot.
50
Seoul home. The field day for the kindergarten children of Seoul under the auspices of 朝鮮日報. 13 kindergarten participated. I think this is one of the best gatherings or outings that the people of Seoul have. Noticeable that none of the kindergartens under the control of the Japanese―those I mean for Korean children―participated. Thus the two races in everything are like drops of oil in a bucket of water―no cooperation, no common action, no sympathy for each other. The fault is largely of the Japanese who shows nothing but contempt for everything Korean.
52
17th. Saturday. Beautiful. Pleasant.
53
Seoul home. 7:10 a.m. Express train from 定州 brought the coffin containing the remains of Mr. 李昇薰. The Seoul police allowed no sort of ceremony or procession. No more than 3 representatives from any group. The coffin was conveyed in a funeral onto direct from the station to the dissecting room of the Medical Dept. of the Seoul University. No more than 10 autos allowed to carry the family and friends of Mr. 李.
55
18th. Sunday. Beautiful. Hot.
56
Seoul home. 6 p.m. went to 明月館本店 to entertain the 校長, and other teachers of the 歸範附屬普通學校, with other members of the 父兄會 or Parental Association lately organized. The new 校長 Mr. 渡邊 is a handsome looking man and is said to be more broadminded than his predecessor Mr. 赤木 who was a little too much up or beaurocrat. Rain began about 9 p.m.
58
19th. Monday. Rain. Cool.
59
Seoul home. Rain―drizzling rain most of the morning.
61
20th. Tuesday. Bright. Pleasant.
62
Seoul home. 隆熙 or 晶善, the second daughter of cousin 致旿 was married to 金鍾勳, the second son of Mr. 金元培 of Song Do, at 4:30 p.m. in the Town Hall. Mr. Kim gave ¥250.00 to the 三越吳服店 no doubt thinking that they would decorate in a swell style the dirty Hall. Except a curtain back of the platform there was no decoration to speak of two potted palms on both sides of the platform, nor a single flower in sight. The vanity of the Kim was rightly served.
64
21st. Wednesday. Bright. Warm.
67
22nd. Thursday. Cloudy. Cool.
68
Seoul home. Began building the retaining wall of the 翠雲藥水坮. A sprinkling fine rain late afternoon.

Seoul home. 12:30 p.m. with wife took lunch at the official residence of the Governor General, the lunch being given to a bunch of American editors. I was the only Korean invited besides Mr. and Mrs. 金用□ who is after all the employee of the Government. I felt quite out of element.
72
Dr. Oh(吳兢善) who has just returned from Europe tells me that everybody talks about and wishes for peace, but that everybody in America and Europe prepares for war.
74

80
26th. Monday. Sunny. Hot.
83
27th. Tuesday. Lovely. Pleasant.
86
28th. Wednesday. Bright. Hot.
90
Seoul home. A good shower between 7:30 and 8 a.m. This little rain was enough to drive away from their work 3 masons and 8 coolies, engaged to build the retaining wall of the "Spring Site"(藥水坮, 翠雲亭) . The masons are paid ¥2.00 per day or 50 sen more than Chinese masons and the Koreans work at least 1/3 less than the Chinese. No wonder everybody is employing the Chinese, as masons, carpenters and coolies in preference to the Koreans.
92
30th. Friday. Sun. Rather steamy.
95
31st. Saturday. Cloud and sun. Steamy.
