Seoul home. This morning's paper reports that five middle school in the city of Ham-Hung have declared strike all at one time yesterday morning. Two of them Mission Schools 永生女子高普 and 永生高普. The students in the Christian schools demand among other things such as 5% reduction of tuition. The dismissal of incompetent teachers etc. The discontinuance of compulsory religious instructions. Now, when one goes into a Korean restaurant he goes in with the full understanding that the house dosen't sell any foreign food. If he wanted to eat foreign food he should have gone to a foreign restaurant. If he doesn't want Korean food why did he go to a Korean restaurant. If he doesn't want christian instructions why did he go to a Christian school? The Russian type of brutal socialism has its emissaries in all schools. The concerted action of the students of the 5 middle schools in Ham-Hung is more serious than one may think. The whole plague of strikism will spread all over the country I am afraid.

Seoul home. The Central Council(中央協議會) of the Korean Methodist Church met at the Union Bible School for Women from 9 a.m. till 5 p.m. In making out the budget of the Council, a secretary, to take charge of the Government relations(佈敎管理報告事務) was asked for. His salary ¥600―a year. Dr. Fisher and Mr. Braunum objected to the item as it would increase the overhead expenses of the council. So far all right. But I was sorry to hear them say that the Genl. Superintendent(摠理師) and his secretary could ample do all that work without hiring a man for 12 months to do a work that could be done in a few days! I felt hurt because they showed so little sympathy for the hard working Chong Ni Sha. They ignored the fact it takes all the time and energy of Dr. Ryang to look after the complicated problems of 20 districts scattered all over 8 of the 13 Provinces of Korea. Nobody can accuse Ryang of being lazy. He has heaps of correspondence with the Mother Churches. To ask him, to personally carry the burden of keeping up the voluminous reports to the Government, besides his already too many and too heavy duties―sounds like saying "You are a Korean. You are paid the magnificent salary of ¥150.00 per month. You must therefore do everything yourself―the exacting work of a Genl. Superintendent plus the work of a janitor." I know they couldn't and wouldn't have hinted even such a thing to an American bishop. Dr. Noble simply told them that it would take the whole time of a whole man to look after the Government relations.

Worshipped at the Northward Church. Genl. SuperintendentRyang gave a good sermon on the "Conquering Christ." Fourteen women missionaries ordained as preachers―in this matter the new Korea Meth. Church is ahead of the Southern Meth. Church in America.

The orderliness and business-like way in which the first Annual Conference of the united Methodism of Korea excited the admiration of all. Dr. Ryang has proved himself the only man possible for the difficult position. I and others feared that the coming together of the delegates from different sections of the land might provoke storms of sectional prejudices and hatred. But thank God the meeting has gone so far without any hard feelings one section against the other. No doubt this due to (1) the presence of the older generation 9 preachers. (2) The weight and counsel of missionaries. (3) And the universal good will which Dr. Ryang enjoys.

Seoul home. Went to the C.C.C. to see Mr. 兪億兼. Lunch at 白南善氏’s home. Visited the library with Dean Yu. Found it in the first stage of formation. I offered to contribute ¥2,000.00 as a permanent library fund―the interest only to be used in purchasing such books as the College may deem necessary. The money to be paid in instalment between now and the end of the year 1932. I like to have a corner in the library which I may use for the housing of my collection of Korean books.

Mr. 白 tells me that the Annual Conference came to adjournment about 12:30 this morning.

The Governor General, Viscount Saito was relieved of his office on the 17th I understand. The Vice-Governor, Mr. Kodama also resigned. genl. U-kaki(宇垣) was appointed the Governor Genl. while Mr. Imaida, 今井田, is to be the Vice Governor. So far as Koreans are concerned one Governor―whoever he may be―is as good as another. The Japanese-interest first and last policy will be maintained by every Governor Genl.―military or civil. Yet both Viscount Saito and Count Kodama have been personally very popular by their amiability―and suavity.

Seoul home. Just a month ago the Dong-A-Il-Po published the news that the hill on which the tomb of 李蕣臣(Yi Soon Shin) is located, the old house he lived in, the rice fields which have provided the fund for annual food offerings to his spirit, and the priceless implements of war which he used―all this was to be put under the hammer of the auctioneer to pay the debt which the unworthy descendant of the worthy man―the greatest man of the Yi Dynasty―had incurred. It was further reported that the Tong-il Bank which had lent the money taking the above mentioned property as security had sent a formal notice to Yi's family that the bank would have to foreclose the mortgage if Yi clan did not pay ¥3,000.00 at once. No sooner the article appeared in the paper than money began to come in "yens" and "sens" from children, women, to pay the debt. During the last 30 days only a few people contributed ¥100.00 each. I paid ¥264.00 the largest sum paid in so far. Five sen, fifty sen, twenty sen etc. have been paid in from all parts of the country. The total up to date is quite over ¥11,000.00! None of the well-do-do high yang-bans or rich merchants have so far paid anything. They are afraid of the Japanese.

Seoul home. Hearing through the phone that Mr. 白雲◎ had passed away at 5 this morning. I had to hurry to Song Do by the 10:08 a.m. train. Some facts about him: He joined me, 1907, when I was the Principal of the Anglo-Korean School. He taught drill and arithmetic. His salary began with ¥25.00. When I returned home from prison 1915, he was still teaching with his pay reduced to ¥15.00. 1916 or there about, I appointed him the Genl. Supervisor of my farms. The highest peak of his ambition was to have 50 bags of unhulld rice a year. He said he would think or wish for no more. I lent him ¥4,000.00 with which he bought some fields thus assuring him 50 bags of rice a year. I built him a house to live in but without consulting me he secretly made out a deed of the house in his name―thus proving himself a cunning man.

Seoul home.(Facts about 白) . He had agreed to pay me back the loan of ¥4,000.00 in ten year instalments. He kept his promise for about 3 years. Then I cancelled his obligation for which he seemed to be grateful. He had been paid good salary―far better than he could have gotten anywhere else―30~70 at first―then 100 yen during the last five years. Found he got so busy in feathering his nest that he neglected his work as supervisor. In 1929, I sent him to sell my rice in 和順. He got ¥2,500.00 for it. Then without a word to me he lent the entire sum to 林鍾喆 for speculation. A dead loss. When I showed him my dissatisfaction in his unjustifiable act, he whined that I was treating him unkindly! His failures in his work revealed themselves one after another. I bore with him as long as I could and when the doctors pronounced his tumor fatal, I had to tell him to hand over his work to Allen. In his sick bed he is reported by his son(台星) , to have complained that I didn't treat him right―that he was wronged etc.! I wrong him when he, who came to Song Do a penniless man―whose highest ambition was to have 50 bags of rice a year―died with rice fields yielding him 350 bags of rice a year, a good house and a considerable sum of money in cash! I have altogether ¥550.00 for the education and marriage of his son 台星. Well now 白雲◎ is dead, but I have no tears for him. One more ingrate gone.
