1. 3월 1일

2
1st. Tuesday. Cloudy―Mild.

3
Seoul home. Weather looks preparing for some rain―which we need much to wash out the drainages.

2. 3월 2일

5
2nd. Wednesday. Rain a.m. Cloudy p.m.

6
Seoul home. Rain from 9 last night until 10:30 this morning. Went to the Central Y. where the funeral service for Mr. Kim Sang Sul was solemnized. The large hall was nearly full with the boys from Jang Hoon Primary School of which Mr. Kim was the Principal and many Japanese and Korean friends. He was of such a poor family that when he came to Seoul at the age of 6 he was carried on a "jigge" on the back of his father. He made his little fortune and many friends. His hearse was preceded by hundreds of school children and followed by nine auto's carrying the members of his family and friends.

3. 3월 3일

3rd. Thursday. Pretty on the whole.

9
Seoul home.

4. 3월 4일

11
4th. Friday. Cloudy a.m. Pretty p.m.

12
Seoul home. The Choi Rin called this morning. He told me that the Governor and his Cabinet are determined to make me a councilor of the Central Council 中樞院. I had to tell him that I would see the Governor General or the Director of Interior Affairs and present to them my reasons for refusing to accept an official position.
13
10 a.m. wife and I went to the First Higher Common School to attend its Commencement Exercises. I was glad that our Jang Suni got his graduation certificate. I had feared that his long absence from the school last year on account of ill health might have prevented him from graduation.

5. 3월 5일

15
5th. Saturday. Cloudy.

16
Seoul home. Rained last night.
17
Our precious Jang Sun and Ki-sun left Seoul 4:15 p.m. for Tokyo. Jang Sun to enter or try to enter the Tokyo Higher Agricultural School and Ki-sunthe Uyeno Musical School. This being the first time these dear boys have left us for so many months to come, wife and I cried like babies. God bless these precious boys on land and sea and in the great city where they will be strangers among strangers.

6. 3월 6일

19
6th. Sunday. Cloudy.

20
Seoul home. Rain from 7 to 8 a.m. Received telegrams from our two boys, one from Fusan and another from Shimonoseki that they had arrived at those ports all safe and sound. Thank God!
21
This morning called on Mr. Tanaka(田中□太郞) the official interpreter of the Korean language, in the Government General. I told him how and why I would be very much embarrassed if I were appointed a Councilor(中樞院參議) . Mr. Tanaka heartily agreed with me and said it was the lack of knowledge of the local situation on the part of the rulers here that made them to put me in a official position. He said that I could serve the Japanese administration where I am now.

7. 3월 7일

23
7th. Monday. Bright. Icy cold.

24
Seoul home.

8. 3월 8일

26
8th. Tuesday. Bright. Icy cold.

27
Seoul home.

9. 3월 9일

29
9th. Wednesday. Cloudy. Icy.

30
Seoul home. 4 p.m. I went to the office of the Chief of the Provincial Bureau of Police at his polite request. Found a number of well-to-do Koreans and Japanese. The Chief, Mr. 高安, told us that the Government General had decided to detach the Mail-Shinpo (Daily News) from the Keijo Nippo to form an independent stock company with the capitalization at one million yen to be covered by 40,000 shares @ ¥25.00 per share and that ¥350,000.00 is to be raised by "voluntary contributions" from the people in 13 provinces. The people of Kyong Ki Do are to be favored with 3,000 shares for which they mostly Seoulians pay ¥75,000.00―with gratitude and joy!!!

10. 3월 10일

32
10th. Thursday. Snow―Icy.

33
Seoul home. Snow from last night and all day today until 5 p.m. The biggest snow Seoul has had not only this retiring winter but also in last several years. But for the constant thawing as the snow fell on the ground, the depth might have exceeded at least 5 or 6 inches.
34
Hear Mr. Ahn Chang Ho passed away last night. He had a half dozen diseases in him all at once so that there was hardly any hope that he could pull through. Better it was for him to go. Yet I can't help feeling sad for losing a friend.

11. 3월 11일

36
11th. Friday. Bright-Icy.

37
Seoul home. 9 this morning wife and I went to the Girls' Higher Common School with anxious hearts to see the list of the names of the girls who had passed the entrance examination successfully. The front yard of the school was packed with applicants and their relatives. At ten the list was posted and were grateful to see our Yung Hie's number(104) in the list. It was heartrending, on the other hand, to see the unsuccessful applicants and their relatives turn away pale at their failure.
38
6 p.m. wife and I entertained 光鉉’s father, Dr. and Mrs. Ryang, Mr. and Mrs. Yu Hyung Ki, Mr. and Mrs. Hong Pyong Sun to a Chinese supper at the Woo-Moon Restaurant.
39
Myong Hie entered the Government Medical College Hospital.
40
Dr. Ryang told us that forty policemen had been detailed to surround the room where the remains of Mr. Ahn Chang Ho were kept so that nobody outside of his near relatives was allowed to go in without his name being recorded. So nobody dared to go there to pay the last respect to the remains.

12. 3월 12일

42
12th. Saturday. Beautiful.

43
Seoul home. Myong Hie gave birth to a girl this morning about 5:30. Wife and Mary had stayed with her all last night.

13. 3월 13일

45
13th. Sunday. Beautiful.

46
Seoul home. According to the papers, Austria is to be annexed to Germany. Hitler is reported to have gone to Vienna and that German troops have already crossed the boundary line. Thus the last page of the Versailles treaty, the meanest and insanest document that the diplomats of the greatest nations in Europe have ever put their seals on is torn to shreds. In it France played Shylock; America, through Woodrow Wilson, acted Don Quixote while Britain, by siding with France grabbed everything that was worth grabbing, and by patting on the back of W. Wilson, made him father a silly peace machine called the League of Nations just to protect and perpetuate the status quo to the benefit of the biggest grabbers. With all my admiration for the great qualities of the Anglo-Saxon nations I can't help feeling that they are suffering awfully from the disease of superiority complex.
47
This disease made them so careless that they actually offered to disarm themselves forgetting or overlooking the fact that three great war-like hungry nations were arming to the teeth to jump on any prey that might come within their reach.

14. 3월 14일

49
14th. Monday. Cloudy p.m.

50
Seoul home.

15. 3월 15일

52
15th. Tuesday. Beautiful.

53
Seoul home. 3 p.m. went to the office of the Kyong Ki Provincial Governor where a score of Japanese and Koreans had been invited to perfect the plan for organizing the stock company of the Mai-il Shinpo. The Japanese subscribed 1,276 shares while the Koreans, took 1,160 leaving 564 shares to be distributed among the 20 counties(都) and 2 prefectures(府) .

16. 3월 16일

55
16th. Wednesday. Beautiful.

56
Seoul home. According to the Chosun Il Po there are 33,000 applicants for all the Higher Common Schools in the country. Of this number the existing schools can accommodate only about 5,000 new students. The Tai Dong Commercial School can admit only 100 out of 1,350 applicants.
57
4 p.m. Mr. Tanaka, the Governor General's Korean Interpreter called. He kindly informed me that he had a talk with Mr. Kondo, the new Private Secretary of the Governor General about the wisdom of not appointing me a Central Councilor and also with Mr. Otake, the Director of Home Affairs and that they both seemed to appreciate my situation. However nothing definite until the return of the new Governor, Mr. Ohno from Tokyo.

17. 3월 17일

59
17th. Thursday. Beautiful.

60
Seoul home. Wife left Seoul for Song Do 12:20 with Allen.

19. 3월 19일

65
19th. Saturday. Beautiful.

66
Left Seoul 8:15 a.m. with wife, 文姬, and 珽善 for Song Do. The weather looked rather threatening early morning but turned out to be one of the prettiest days of the early spring. The wedding ceremony of our grand daughter, the eldest daughter of Candler, was celebrated at the North-ward Church at 2 p.m. The bridegroom, Kim Myong Ho, looks a nice fellow. May their union be richly blessed by God, the giver of all good gifts.

20. 3월 20일

68
20th. Sunday. Beautiful.

69
Song Do home. Lunch at Mr. Kim Jin Ok's(金鎭億) home at 4 p.m. According to Song Do custom the bridegroom's family entertains the members of the bride's family to a feast the day after the wedding.
70
After breakfast wife, Sun Hie's grandma, our baby boy, Allen's wife and I visited Kwan Poong Tai, the property of 珽善. Wife seemed to enjoy the excursion.

21. 3월 21일

72
21st. Monday. Rain.

73
Song Do home. Rain from small hours of the morning. Ja-Hie's wedding was first planned to be solemnized today. What a good luck to have changed the date so that we had a glorious day on the 19th. God grant this may be prophetic of the good lucks she and her husband shall have all through their lives!
74
Lunch at the home of Kim Jong Hoon, the husband of Yung Hie, the second daughter of cousin Chi Oh. Kim has a big estate 50,000 tsubo on which he has about 30 sheep.
75
Returned to Seoul 4:50 p.m. train. Rain all day long in Song Do and in Seoul. Old farmers say that even a cloudy day on the 20th day of Second Moon(old calendar) promises a good year. Hence this rain so gentle and steady is welcome by all farmers.

24. 3월 24일

83
24th. Thursday. Cloudy. Misty rain p.m.

84
Seoul home. With wife and Mary went to the Women's Normal School to see our Yung Hie(瑛姬) graduate from the Primary Dept. of the school. Over 200 Normal School graduates receiving their diploma, the program of the exercises was long and elaborate. The whole procedure was characterized by scrupulous neatness, orderliness and ceremoniousness. The addresses all written and long winded. Not a crack of smile or a whisper of cheer. Everything was so cut and dry. Too solemn for such an occasion.
85
Our Yung Hie is a beautiful girl. She graduated with honor. Our five daughters have graduated from this school. Every inch of the school ground is sacred to me.

25. 3월 25일

87
25th. Friday. Beautiful from 10 a.m.

88
Seoul home. Dr. Ryang left Seoul per 4:15 express on his way to America to attend the Methodist General Conference. The trip will do him good―giving him the rest which he needs so badly.

She has been living in Tokyo for the past few years. Ki-suni discovered in her a great friend as soon as he reached Tokyo this time. She introduced him to Mr. Iguchi, a well known pianist in the Uyeno Musical Academy. I shall however have to wait a few days longer to be positively assured of Ki-sun's success.
