Seoul home. 9 a.m. the Mayor of Seoul organized the Seoul Branch of the Korean Union of the National Mobilization. After that 10 a.m. the Korean Union was formally organized with Mr. Shiobara, as the president. Mr. Shiobara gave lunch to the Managers(理事) of the Korean Union at Chosun Hotel. From the Hotel all went to the Chosun Shrine at 2 p.m. to perform the "Information Service" 奉告祭 to report the Deities the formation of the Mobilization Union. Between 2:30 and 4 a series of "sonaiki" or torrential down pour.

Seoul home. Went to Keijo Y. 9 a.m. to finish the work on the new Constitution of the Korean Y. Union. Thanks to the assiduity of Mr. Kasaya, the General Secretary of the Japanese Y., the draft of the new Constitution was satisfactorily made out.

6 p.m. went to the Chosun Hotel where Mr. Shiobara, the President of the Korean Union of the National Mobilization, gave a supper to a group of reporters of various papers in the city.

Seoul home. 6:30 with Dr. Koo went to Chun Hyang Won Villa Restaurant(天香園 莊) where about 30 people, all Koreans, had gathered to commemorate the 1st Anniversary of Mr. Sayeki's appoint-ness to the Mayorship of Seoul. Remarkable there was not a single elderly man except myself, in the crowd. Half of them were those who are living in fear and trembling under the terrorism of the almighty Police while the other half were young men whom Jung Jai Hup, the right hand "dog" of the Mayor or had collected as worshipper of Sayeki. Before the banquet a collection was taken to buy a platinum watch for the Mayor. 5 men subscribed ￥100.00 each, 6 ￥50.00, 2 ￥20.00. Of the fear-oppressed guests there were 玄濟明, 桂貞植, 朴寅俊, 金道演, 朴仁德, 具永淅, 獨孤璇, Mr. Yi Kun Sey from Tokyo said he graduated from 中央大學 the same school which is the alma-metre of the Mayor. I returned with Koo Y.S. about 9.

Seoul home. 9:30 to Keijo Y.M.C.A. where about 100 Korean Christians mostly preachers and Japanese brethren met to arrange plans for the formal organization of the Korean Union of Christian Workers. About 40 people both Korean and Japanese came from different parts of the country.

Hear Dr. Koo Y.S. was taken to the West Gate Police Station this morning!

Seoul home. This being the Anniversary of the Marco Polo Bridge Incidence, a grand celebration was staged throughout the city. At 8 an immense crowd went to the Chosun Shrine to pay respect the divine ancestors of the Imperial Family. At 10 a.m. the Seoul and Korean Unions of the National Mobilization had their organization ceremonies at the Seoul Stadium. In spite of rain and mud the ground was full. I had the honor of leading the great audience in shouting banzai for the Imperial Majesty. After this ceremony a memorial service in honor of the brave dead soldiers followed. Returned home about 12:30.

At 3 p.m. the Korean Christian Union had its organization ceremony at the old Public Hall. General Minami graced the meeting with an address.

At 7:30 Messrs. Han Kyu Bok, and Ko Won Hoon gave addresses on the topics of the day in the Central Y.M.C.A. Mr. Ko spoke rather too long. Han put some humor in his speech so succeeded in keeping the crowd awake.

Seoul home. Went to the Japanese Y. to have a conversation with Mr. Yebizawa, the President of the Japanese Christian National Council. Several Korean pastors and Japanese brethren present. Mr. Yebizawa had come to give fraternal greeting to the Korean Union yesterday.

Accepting the invitation of Mr. Sayeki the Mayor of Seoul went to his official residence with Chi-Chang about 6 p.m. A nice Japanese supper was served. Mr. and Mrs. Sayeki spared no pains to make the occasion pleasant to the guests who were as follows: Messrs. 玄濟明, 桂貞植, 李根世, 金道演, 羅□□, 尹致旺, 尹致昌, 鄭在洽(who follows the Mayor as a shadow follows a body) Messrs 朴仁德, 金元福, and myself. They drank, drank and drank, I returned home before them at 9.

I invited Mr. Yebizawa, Rev. Mitsui, Mr. Niwa and Kasaya to lunch at Chosun Hotel.

2:35 p.m. to the Station to welcome General Kawakishi(川岸) who had distinguished himself in many battles in North China during the last 11 months. The Station was full to the capacity while the streets were lined with students and others welcoming the General.

Brother Chi-Chang tells me that last night Jung Jai Hup, after my return, called me an anti-Japanese fellow and that he would throw us three brothers into prison. Chi-Chang further told me that brother Chi-Wang took the whole party to Kook-Il-Kwan for 2nd entertainment(!) that there Jung Jai Hup either kicked or knocked Chi-Chang on the back of his head; that Jung threw a beer bottle at Chi-Chang and then tried to throttle him. Mr. Sayeki had to throw Jung down on floor. A shameful incidence; but Chi-Wang was wrong to take them to the restaurant.

Brother Chi-Chang's explanation of why Jung Jai Hup hates us; Ⅰ. In spite of the fact that he had dropped hints in the hearing of my brothers and of 文姬 that he could help release 光鉉 from the West Gate police, we have never asked him for the favor (1) because we know he is a liar and (2) because 光鉉 had told us before went to the Police prison not to ask any favor from Jung Jai Hup even if he(光鉉) had to serve a term.

Ⅱ. Second reason is that Jung Jai Hup is now actually building a house at the estimated cost of 13,000.00. He had asked Chi-Chang to furnish part of the cost and to ask me to contribute the balance, I don't know what Chi-Chang had given but I haven't consented to give any to the "dog" whose greed knows no limit.

Brother Chi-Chang's story: Last night after I had left the party, Jung Jai Hup began to show his nasty temper and tongue especially against Chi-Chang. Jung said Dr. Oh Kung Sun was an anti-Japanese. When Chi-Wang denied the charge, Jung said: "You say so because you are working under him."

Then Brother Chi-Wang, under the influence of too much sake, invited the whole party to Kook-Il-Kwan. There Jung loudly accused me for being an anti-Japanese etc. Chi-Chang narrowly escaped being seriously hurt by being hit on the back of his head, by having a beer bottle thrown at him and by being throttled by the intoxicated Jung―intoxicated by alcohol and by hatred. There were present: 玄濟明, 桂貞植, 朴仁德, 金元福, 金道演, 李根世, 羅□□, 尹致旺, 尹致昌, 佐伯顯, his wife.

Seoul home. Went to Ryong San Governor General's Official residence 6:30 p.m. where General Minami gave a simple Japanese supper to General Kawakishi who used to be the Commander of the 20th Sidan. About hundred guests of whom 16 were Koreans. Returned home about 8:30.

With brother Chi-Chang I invited Yi Kun Sey to a lunch at Chosen Hotel. After the meal I told Yi what I know about the rascality, meanness and treacherous ingratitude of Jung Jai Hup.

4:15 p.m. Miss Young left Seoul on her homeward journey. She was good to our Grace during all the years she studied music in the Ewha College. Seoul home. 8 a.m. called on Mr. Yi Kak Jong and told him what Jung Jai Hup did and said to Chi-Chang the night of 8th inst. Also told him that Jung ridiculed, in the hearing of Chi-Chang, my having contributed ￥5,000.00 to the National Defence Fund on the 23rd May saying that the money could have been spent more profitably somewhere else―(the West Gate Police Station) . I did not mention the last place.

Seoul home. Called on brother Chi-Wang at his office. His version of July 8th affair at Kook-Il-Kwan was substantially same as Chi-Chang's. Chi-Wang told me that two days ago Sayeki invited him and Chi-Chang to a Japanese restaurant to have a reconciliation lunch with Jung Jai Hup. Before the meal was over Sayeki had to leave and Chi-Wang had to pay the bill. This is the usual trick of Jung Jai Hup. Chi-Wang told me also that Jung asked him to contribute ￥8,000.00 to help build his(Jung's) new house(!) Chi Wang first promised to give ￥1,000.00, than ￥2,000.00 and finally ￥3,000.00 on condition he would pay it next year. Only a few days after that Jung sent the contractor to Chi-Wang for the money! Chi Wang was obliged to sign a promissory note due sometime next December. Jung Jai Hup is an incorrigible rascal more to be feared than a viper.

Seoul home. Visited uncle in the afternoon. He said he even now doesn't lie down in day time. He sits as straight as a stick smoking and smoking. He sits up to 12 in the night, if he had someone to talk to. But as soon as he lies down, he goes to sleep at once and doesn't wake up until 12 next day. What an iron constitution he has!

Seoul home. Yi Kun Say called with Chi-Chang 10 a.m. Yi told me that Jung Jai Hup had told him that my young brother Chi-Chang had promised to give Mr. Sayeki 300 "tsubos" of valuable land. In order to test Jung Yi asked Chi-Chang if that was true, in the presence of Jung. Jung flatly denied having said that to Yi and then whispered to Chi-Chang that Yi lied! Yi further told me that Jung had begged him to ask me to give him(Jung) ￥3,000.00 for building the new house.

4 p.m. to the Chosun Hotel where about 200 guests were entertained by General Koiso, the retiring Commander-in-chief of the Army of Korea. He is transferred to the General Staff in Tokyo.

Went to the Station to see off General Ko-iso who left Seoul 4:15 p.m. for Tokyo. From the Station went to the Parsonage of Rev. Samejima, the Japanese Methodist pastor with Dr. Helen Kim. Rev. Kim Jong Woo, Mr. Kim In Yung, Yu Hyong Ki, represented the Korean Methodist Church while Messrs. Mitsui, O-ta, Sowta and Rev. Samejima represented the Japanese Methodism. A plan of uniting the two Churches in such way as to avoid the misunderstanding of the authorities was talked about. The Police and Gendarmery have strong objection to Dr. R.'s having gone to America as the representative of Korean Church.

Seoul home. 10 a.m. went to the Social Education Bureau to be present at the Conference of the Leaders of the Provincial Unions of the National Mobilization.

4 p.m. the above leaders were entertained to a supper at the Chosun Hotel by the President of the Korean Union. From 8 to 10 the local leaders had another conference with the Chief-of-the Social Education Bureau to discuss as to the best means of making the local unions function satisfactorily.

Russians having occupied the strategic point on border land between Manchu-kuo and Russia―each contending that the point in question―張鼓峰―belongs to her, the rumor or conjecture is rife about an imminent, outbreak of a Russo-Japanese war. Does Russia feel sure that Japan is fairly exhausted in money and men after a year's fighting in China? Russia the disturber of the Far Eastern peace for the last 40 or 50 years needs a smashing lesson from somebody. Will that somebody be Japan? Indeed there will be no peace in the East as long as Russia goes unpunished for her international crimes.

Seoul home. The Presbyterian Missionaries in Korea are reported to have decided to withdraw from every kind and grade of educational work in Korea, from village "kul-bang" to the College. Further they have decided that no Presbyterian (Northern and Southern) missionary shall teach in any school anything outside the Bible. Considering the fact that a missionary engaged in educational work has to do many things that may hurt his conscience and pride, we can't blame him for his complete withdrawal from all sorts of school work. But by so doing the Presbyterian missionaries will lose thousands or tens of thousands of young people from their church activities. They should have taken the less of the two evils―a compromise with the present situation or the sacrifice of young people.

9 to 12 attended the ceremony of Official Organization of Loyal Thoughts Union of Korea. The members are those who have been converted from Socialism, Korean Nationalism into Loyal Japanese Subjects. There were eight or nine congratulatory addresses, all long and humorless.

Seoul home. 9 a.m. called on Mr. Kasaya who told me yesterday he had a long chat with Mr. Sekiya hoping to hear some encouraging news in regard to the West Gate Terrorism. All Kasaya said was that he had a one-hour-and half conversation with Sekiya; and that Mr. S. expressed his worry or "sim-pai" about the West Gate affair. For any detail Kasaya closed his thin lips as tight as an oyster. Am afraid Kasaya thinks the West Gate Terrorism a piece of good policy to smash up all Korean organizations which are not merged with similar Japanese groups.

Seoul home. The Government General is determined to make Koreans the Japanese subjects as much as the people of Hokkai-do or of Nagasaki. Everybody in schools and churches are ordered to repeat the Oath of Loyalty in which the phrase "We are the subjects of the Japanese Empire" are repeated three times. Thus we must make up our mind to be the Japanese subjects or else to emigrate to Europe or America or heaven. It is very dangerous to straddle on the fence. Those who want to keep distinct Korean organizations independent―especially in their relations with Foreign Committees―think they can fool the Japanese by verbal subterfuges. They don't know the Japanese psychology and nationalism.

Seoul home. Even as late as 1935 there was talk of raising funds to make the Korean Athletic Association a Zai Dan Hojin. When I hinted that there was no need of so doing since we didn't know when the Korean Association might be ordered to be merged into the Japanese Athletic Association, Yu Ok Kyum was one of the men who contended that there was no fear of that as the Korean Association had been formed according to law with the official permit of the Police Authorities. It is interesting that a notice under name of Yu O.K. has been sent out today to the members of the Association(朝鮮體育會) announcing the fact that it was formally annexed to the Japanese Ath. Association(朝鮮體育協會) by the unanimous action of the Directors of the Korean Association in the special session held on the 4th of July.

Mrs. Hong(李恩卿) told us this morning that yesterday she saw Hugh Cynn coming out of the West Gate inquisition room beaming with smiles nodding to the sorrowful relatives of the prisoners to the right and left as if he were in a triumphal procession. Then Hong Pyong Sun came out from the same room with sad, troubled countenance. His wife already with strong suspicion that Cynn is responsible for Hong's arrest couldn't help feeling resentful toward Cynn. Of course her statement has to be taken with a grain of salt.

Seoul home. Dr. Ryang scheduled to arrive at Yokohama on the 28th inst. hasn't sent a word to his home neither by wire nor by post. This evening's papers report that the Russian troops showing no sign of evacuating the strategic points on Chang Ko Bong(張鼓峰) and Sa Cho Bong (沙沙峰) not only but actually opening fire on the Japanese advance defence lines, the latter had to counter attack them so that between 5:40 and 6 this morning the two hills were completely occupied by the Japanese soldiers. Russians are reported to have lost 200 killed and injured.
