Our 琦善 left Seoul per "Akatsuki" express 4:15 p.m. for Tokyo. God bless him and protect him on land and sea, in his school work as well as in everything he does! Tokyo which used to have no more attraction to me than London or Paris, is now a city whose sun shine or rain, heat or cold, are of the deepest interest to me because our two precious boys are there.

Seoul home. 7 a.m. went to Chosun Hotel to see Mr. Sekiya who shows himself a real friend to me. He is a true and good man, if anybody ever was. When he heard what I had told the West Gate Police he was very much worried that I had indirectly admitted my having known that the Club was organized for promoting the cause of independence. He even suggested that I might go and see the Inquisitor and recant what I had said. Both Myong Sup and Yun Hak Soon strongly disapprove such a step as that will incur the animality of the Higher Police. 4 p.m. went to the Chong No Police Station where an elaborate Funeral Service for Uchida, a former Police man who died as soldier in North China.

Seoul home. Yesterday afternoon about 5 received an urgent telephone call from Koo Ja Ok in the West Gate Station asking me to come to the Station quick. In great surprise I went and found in a room 具滋玉, 兪億兼, 申興雨, 李萬桂, 李寬九, 李, 鄭春洙, 具永淅, 朴勝喆, Yu O.K. and Yi Kwan Ku were writing or translating a "manifesto" (a public confession) in which the prisoners expressed their regrets that they had organized the Hung Up Club to promote the cause of Korean independence and to support Yi Sung Man (Dr. Rhee) : and their firm resolution to live and work for the Emperor etc. etc. I was called to give my approval of the manifesto. They―at least Cynn intimated that they would be released today (the 3rd) and the poor prisoners who are doing or saying everything and anything the Police wants then to say or do―just to get out of the hell―may yet be disappointed.

About 2:30 p.m. 31 men who have been detained in the West Gate Police Station for the last 3 months or more were released by the Prosecutor.

3 p.m. went to Chosun Hotel to attend the tea party given by about 60 Koreans in honor of Mr. Sekiya. Thence to cousin Chi-So's home to see cousin Chi Yung just out of the West Gate Prison.

Seoul home. At his request, called on Governor General at his office at 11 a.m. He was as affable as usual. In gist he said: "Let by-gones be by-gones. Three things I hope you will bear in mind in leading the youths of Korea: 1. Teach the young men of the Peninsula to be consistent in words and deeds. Tell them not to think one thing and act another. 2. Remember that the essence of the ideal to make the Orient the "Orient of the Orientals" is the unification of Japan and Korea(內鮮一體) 3. The root and fountain of the Unification of Japan and Korea is to be the faithful and loyal subject of the Empire of Japan.

Seoul home. (Interview with General Minami continued) The General in talking to me had the three points jotted down on a card. When he finished talking I asked him to give me that card. Upon which he gladly wrote the three points of his expectations(希望三要綱) with brush on Japanese letter roll and gave it to me.

Before leaving him I briefly told him that I who had opposed the independent movement in 1919 would not have the folly of joining a Club to promote Korean independence; that not only I but no other sensible Korean would do or have done so. Then I begged him to deal leniently with those men who have lost their school positions.

Seoul home. Called on Mr. Nakajima of the Central Korean Association(中央朝鮮協會) of which he is the General Secretary. He came to Seoul a week ago with Mr. Sekiya, an unofficial representative of Baron Sakadani, the President of the Association.

We had a very frank conversation in regard to the attitude of the Korean people toward the great drama that is being played in the Far East. Told him the intelligent class all realize that the only thing and the best thing that the Korean race can do is to became one with the Japanese race.

Seoul home. Cool both ends of the day but hot in the mid day. From the men who had the taste of the West Gate horrors I learn that all of them were put to torture, to confess what they had never dreamt of doing. One of the most cruel forms of torture was to be forced to stand for hours on end with two arms stretched forward. Hugh Cynn says he was made to stand 72 hours once and 52 hours once. I can hardly believe it.

Seoul home. West Gate Police summoned this morning Yun Hong Sup and Miss Kim Helen. The former has nothing to lose hence nothing to fear, but Helen if she offends the inquisitor, may lose her present job. Great heavens! Why doesn't the police let people live and work in security? Helen Kim can have nothing in the world deserving Police inquisition in political matter. I wonder if Hugh Cynn or his Positive beggars have something to do in this trick.

4:30 a tea reception at Chosun Hotel in honor of Mr. 山崎the Chief of the Social Bureau of 厚生省. He has charge of looking after the well-being of the Koreans (730,000) in the great cities of Japan proper.

Seoul home. One of the hardest things which West Gate Police has afflicted on the ex-members of the Hung Up Club for the fictitious crime－a crime which never existed except in the torture extracted confessions－is compelling the offenders to resign their positions in educational institutions. One of these unfortunate victims is Kim Joon Ok, the most efficient and successful principals the Song Do Higher Common School (now the Song Do Middle School) has ever had, was yesterday compelled to sign his resignation for having been a member of a secret society working for the independence of Korea!!!

Seoul home. An ideal autumnal day. 9 a.m. went to Pak-Moon Temple(博文寺) where an elaborate Buddhistic funeral service was held for H.E. Yi Yun Yong who had passed away a week ago. The, to me meaningless Buddhistic chantings, incense burnings, Buddhistic Scripture recitations, made me to ask in my heart the never ending question. "How do these ignorant monks know that their mummeries would affect the dead one way or the other?"

5 p.m. I entertained to a supper the ex-members of the Hung Up Club at Kook-Il-Kwan and gave each one a facsimile of the Governor General's Three Points Message. A committee of three(Yu O.K., Cynn, and Yi Choon Ho) appointed to prepare a program for future activities.

Seoul home. 8 a.m. went to the Chosun Shrine where over 20 ex-members of the now extinct Hung Club had gathered to pay our respect to the Shrine.

The Christian homes under the jurisdiction of the Chong No Police Station collected one brass article from each household to be presented to the Army Headquarters. All together 620 pieces came to the Central Y.M.C.A. from whence they were forwarded to the Police Station. The Police were highly pleased.

Seoul home. Messrs. Yu O.K., Yi Choon Ho and I met at Hugh Cynn's home 11 a.m. by appointment to formulate a plan and program of what the Hung Up Ex-members should do in the way of patriotic efforts. Decided:―(1) To join the great patriotic associations and to contribute such services as occasion and needs demand.

Left Seoul 6:10 a.m. for Song Do where I arrived at 8. Went straight to Allen's home. Breakfast over I went to the Song Do Middle School at 10 to hold an extra meeting of the Board of Directors. The resignation of Kim Joon Ok was accepted with deep regret but without any comment moved and carried to give him 3 months salary. Mr. Suh Pyong Sung, the Dean of the school was appointed the transactor(取扱者) of the school affairs until such time as a new principal be found.

Returned to Seoul per 11:40 a.m. train. Attended at 2 p.m. the organization ceremony of the Provincial Anti-Communist Association. Then the officials paid respect to the Chosen Shrine.

9:30 to the 1st General Conference held in the Government General Hall attended by the Provincial Heads of the Provincial Unions of the National Mobilization. The meeting lasted all morning. After lunch the Conference resumed meeting until a little past 2 p.m.

General Minami gave a tea party at 4 at his official residence in honor of Mr. Sekiya where some of the latter's acquaintances―Koreans, Japanese, foreigners―were invited. Bishop Moore also present.

5 p.m. the Central Y. board of director's meeting held in the Y. Social Room. Mr. Barnhart's resignation as to Principal of the Y. School was accepted. I was asked the select the successor and report at the next meeting. I went to put Hong Pyong Sun in the place but there is much opposition.

Today being the anniversary of the 49th birthday of wife we had a family reunion. 9 a.m. went to the Seoul Stadium where the All-Chosun Young Men's Association was inaugurated―4,226 young men from the 13 Provinces participating. Each Provincial Unit had its banners all so beautiful. The march and other soldierly exercises presented a stirring sight. The Governor General made a fitting address. Usual numbers of congratulatory speeches, telegrams. I read the 宣言 or Declaration of the Association. The whole ceremony lasted about 3 hours.

Left Seoul with 永善 and 珽善 for On Yang 7:50 a.m. Arriving there about 11 a.m. we went straight from the Station to Old On-Yang to pay our loving respect to the tombs of our parents. Returning to the springs a little before 12, had a refreshing bath. Lunch over I had a little nap. Leaving the Springs 4:07 p.m. arrived home about 8.

Seoul home. At noon, Mr. Hashi(□師) of the Broadcasting Bureau invited me among others to the Chosun Hotel to meet Admiral Takarabe, the President of the Scientific Research Association. The admiral is 81 years old and is a veteran of two great naval battles―the Sina-Japanese and the Russo-Japanese wars. Yet how gentle and affable he looks!

Seoul home. Sudenten is a rich district in the north western part of Czechoslovakia. Germans form a majority of its population. Hitler wanting that piece of land adjoining Germany mobilized troops threatening to take it by force if Czecho Government refused to give it up. Sudenten was in great danger of becoming the second Serajevo leading to another world-war. England and France step in and persuaded the Czecho Government to concede to Hitler's demand. So far all right. Why don't England and France return the German colonies which they seized by the grace of the Versailles treaty?
