4
3 p.m. went to Soo Song Primary School where the Shero Police Station celebrated the inauguration of Police Prevention Association(警防團) into which the Fire Brigade(消防隊) , Flood Brigade(防水團) , Anti-Communist Association were merged into one. The service was impressive.

3. 10월 3일

10

11
Seoul home. The Principal of Tuk Sung Girls' Industrial School―formerly Kun Wha School―gave a feast to the friends of Miss Kim Melisa, the founder of the school, at her new home in honor of her 61st anniversary. No doubt she is a remarkable woman. Ignorant and deaf yet her horse common sense and indomitable will enabled to start and to keep up a school in face of difficulties that might have discouraged even a strong man.

4. 10월 4일

13
4th. Wednesday. Beautiful. Warm.

14
Seoul home. Rain―good rain―from 7―more or less through the night.
15
At 7:30 the inauguration ceremony of the new Bishop of Korea Methodist Church took place at the Jung Dong Church. The house was full everybody seemed to be pleased with the new head of the Church because his election had no tricks or politics back of him. The people especially the western delegates object to Kim Yung Sup because of the constant sneaky manuverurs of Hugh Cynn and his tools, to have him elected.

5. 10월 5일

31
Nothing is so good that it can be carried to excess without evil effect. Peace-loving. But carried to excess, it produces a race of human mollusks an easy prey to every aggressor. Worse still, excessive pacifism saps every heroic element in human nature. It turns the fighting instinct into factional spirit which instead of meeting enemies in battle fields, butchers its enemies by intrigues―by pen and tongue as witness the disgraceful and degrading quarrels between the aristocratic families in the last 3 centuries of the Yi Dynasty.
32
On the other hand, excessive war-loving turns a whole nation into brutal Prussianism which seems to prefer the misery and destruction of others to the happiness and prosperity of their own people.
33
The world will never become a safe home for a high civilization until man has learned to be the master of peace-loving and war-loving instincts or spirits and not their slaves.

10. 10월 10일

35
10th. Tuesday. Pretty.

Seoul home.

38
11th. Wednesday. Beautiful.

39
Left Seoul per Akatsuki 4:15 p.m. for Tokyo with Dr. Ryang, Bishop Jung, Revs. Yi Yun Yung and Liu Hyong Ki. Sorry to leave wife at hospital. Reached Fusan about 10 a.m. Left Fusan 11 by Ko-an Maru―very comfortable.

12. 10월 12일

41
12th. Thursday. Cloudy.

42
On train. Arrived Shimonoseki about 7:30 a.m. after a peaceful voyage. Breakfast at San-Yo Hotel. Left the port 9:15 express for Tokyo.
43
Bishop Jung Choon Soo, who is visiting Japan for the first time is enchanted with the lovely scenery along the road. He says he feels like traveling in a well kept park. Yet the more I see Japan the more I admire the Japanese people. Only wish they loved war a little less. Reaching Kyoto at 8 Jung Bong Sup met me at the Station and got on board of the train to go to Tokyo with me.

13. 10월 13일

45
13th. Friday. Cloud and sun.

46
Arrived at Tokyo Station 7:30 a.m. So happy to meet our 璋善 and 琦善 and 龍求 “將軍”, cousin Chi Soh's 6th boy and 源善, his 3rd brother also met us at the Station. Bishop Kugimiya and a few other Church leaders gave us a welcome at the Station. I went to our boys' home and while others put up at the Y.M.C.A. hostel. So glad to be with our boys.
47
Before we parted this morning we, Dr. R., Bishop J., Rev. Y. and L. and I paid our respect to the Meiji Shrine and the Imperial Palace.
48
Happy to have sukiyaki supper with our dear 璋善, 琦善. 龍求 and 奉燮 at Marukin(丸金) restaurant.

14. 10월 14일

50
14th. Saturday. Clear.

51
Tokyo. Rested at our boys' lodging.
52
I am impatient with a Korean who has been abroad to America or Europe when I hear him speak disparagingly of Tokyo by comparing the buildings and streets of the city with those of America or Europe. A Korean ought to compare Korea with Japan and be humble. What has a Korean to do with America or Europe? It will take Korean a couple of centuries to catch up with the Japanese in ability and efficiency.

15. 10월 15일

54
15th. Sunday. Cloudy.

55
Tokyo. Called on Mr. Usami. He and his charming wife were glad, really glad to see me. Called on Mr. Sekiya but missed him.
56
7 p.m. I addressed and over-crowded roomful Korean students at Y.M.C.A. Hall on Luke 16:12. I was deeply moved to see the boys and girls in a city where they are strangers in a strange country.

16. 10월 16일

58
16th. Monday. Rain all day and night.

59
Tokyo. The old lady Mrs. Kon(今) who lives next door to our boys' lodging has been exceedingly kind to them. On the day Korea was annexed to Japan every house keeper was ordered by the police to hoist the Japanese flag in celebration of the joyful event. Mrs. Kon says she didn't do it because what was Japan's joy must have been Korea's sorrow. She has certainly a real samurai blood and spirit.

17. 10월 17일

61
17th. Tuesday. Rain all day.

62
Tokyo. Rain all last night.
63
Called on Mr. Iketa(池田淸) , the Commander of the Metropolitan Police Dept. He used to be the Head of the Police Dept. of the Korean Government General. From Korea he was promoted to the Governorship of Hokai-Do and then to that of Osaka before he filled the present important position.
64
Paid visit to Mrs. Saito, wife of Viscount Saito, Mr. Maruyama and General Ukaki but missed the last.

18. 10월 18일

66
18th. Wednesday. Bright. Cool.

67
Tokyo. 11:30 The Korean delegates and the Japanese Committee met at Harris Hall in the Aoyama Gakuin. Dr. Abe, President of the Gakuin was elected Chairman. Dr. Ryang most ably presented the Korean side of the proposed co-operation between the Japan Methodist Church and the Korea Methodist Church. The Japanese Committee was very considerate and reasonable and showed no effort to force a union of the two bodies. Practically everything Dr. Ryang proposed was accepted. Ryang showed himself a statesman-like leadership in the negotiations.

19. 10월 19일

69
19th. Thursday. Cloud―Cool.

70
Tokyo. Was invited to breakfast by Messrs. Yamamoto, President of the Japanese National of Y.M.C.A.'s and Saito, the General Secretary of the same at Imperial Hotel―General Hibiki was also present. He is 83 years old while his wife is 82. He hopes to live to 100 years of age when he and his wife will make a world-tour together! He is indefatigable in preaching the Gospel of Christ. It is wonderful that the couple are both over four scores of years and still enjoy such degree of good health. But it is greater wonder that he could have kept his Christian faith through his army life. When a Japanese samurai becomes a Christian he is as true as his sword.
71
By the 9:50 a.m. train went to Kamakura where the Japan Methodist Church holds its General Conference. The Kamakura beach is very much like the Song Jun Beach, only the land on both sides of the bay extends further to the sea than at Song Jun. The Joint Committee met again at the Parsonage and formal agreement was decided.

20. 10월 20일

73
20th. Friday. Cloud. Cold.

74
Tokyo. Rather too warm at noon. I invited to a sukiyaki supper at Marukin. The children of cousin Chi-Soh and of cousin Chi-Sung, Miss An Yung Ja(now Mrs. Pak) also came.

21. 10월 21일

76
21st. Saturday. Sun and cloud.

77
Tokyo. Went to Kamakura for 9 a.m. train. Returned to Tokyo late afternoon.
78
Received a telegram informing me that wife had returned home from Hospital quite well.

22. 10월 22일

80
22nd. Sunday. Cloudy―Chilly.

81
Tokyo. Worshipped at the Y.M.C.A. Hall where the Korean congregation has its temporary meeting place. Pastor Yi is an active young man.
82
Today being the 18th anniversary of our Kisun's birthday we had a supper at home all by ourselves. 奉燮 and 璋善 prepared the rice and soup. 龍求 also present.

23. 10월 23일

84
23rd. Monday. Cloud a.m. Sun p.m.

85
Tokyo. Went to Kamakura in the morning to see the new Bishop elected. The election took place at 2 p.m. Dr. Abe was elected by 57 votes out of 79. Returned to Tokyo by the 3:53 p.m. train.

24. 10월 24일

87
24th. Tuesday. Clear and cold.

88
Tokyo. At 11 a.m. visited the Korean Y.M.C.A. with Pastor Yi and Dr. Ryang. Then we four 梁, 李, 尹槿, and I, went Maruouchi Restaurant for lunch.
89
Dr. Ryang and I went to Kamakura to be present at the inaugural service of the new Bishop. Returned to Tokyo soon after the service―璋善 went to Tokyo Station 9 p.m. to buy the ferry sleeper ticket, my plan being to leave Tokyo on the 26th and to take the boat at Shimonoseki on the 28th. He returned home after 12 and said he couldn't buy one so he had made arrangement to get a ticket for the 29th boat.

25. 10월 25일

91
25th. Wednesday. Rain all day and night.

92
Tokyo. Rain, rain, rain.
93
Was invited to a tea party at the Chu-O-Tei given by a few of the officers of members of the Central Korea Association(中央朝鮮協會) of which Baron Sakadani is the President. When I and Dr. Ryang went there 3 p.m. we were greeted by Mr. Mizuno(水野) who was the Vice Governor of Korea under Viscount Saito, and who was one time the Home Minister, Messrs. Usami, Sekiya, Maruyama and several others all prominent in the political circles of the city. I was asked to say a few words about the attitude of the Korean people toward the present regime. On the whole they made us glad to have been invited.
94
At noon Dr. Yebizawa, president of the National Council of the Japanese Churches invited me, Dr. Ryang to a sukiyaki lunch. Some of the leading Christians of the city were present―of whom I knew Mr. Tanikawa m.p. and General Hibiki.

26. 10월 26일

96
26th. Thursday. Rain all day and night.

97
Tokyo. Rain―rain―rain. Stayed at home feeling already sorry at the prospect of leaving our precious boys all by themselves with nobody to look after their comforts.
98
Mrs. Kon(今夫人) sent us a good Japanese supper.

27. 10월 27일

100
27th. Friday. Beautiful.

101
Thank God the rain that kept the two preceding days in gloom stopped early this morning and gave me a lovely day to start my journey home. Thank God the ticket arrangement was so made―as if by chance―that I had to leave Tokyo today instead on the 26th, one of the rainiest days I have seen in Tokyo. Left Tokyo at 9 a.m. for Kyoto. So hard to part with our 璋善 and 琦善. Arrived at Kyoto 4:25. Bong Supi met me at the Station and took me to Nak-Dong Apartment.
102
After supper I went to bed. Tired but I had such yearning for our two boys in Tokyo that I couldn't sleep. I had to take a capsule of Amytal.

28. 10월 28일

104
28th. Saturday. Cloudy and sunshine.

105
Kyoto. Thanks to Amytal I had some sleep last night. It's a working dope for insomnia. I wish I didn't have to resort to dopes for needed sleep.
106
8 a.m. with Bong Sup called on Prof. Kimura under whose supervision and direction he had completed his research work. Found the Professor a typical Japanese gentleman. Cool, courteous, clean. I thanked him for his kindnesses to my son-in-law. Spent the rest of the day by visiting Nara, the ancient capital of Japan. Was charmed with the parks, temples and the famous herds of tame deer.

29. 10월 29일

108
29th. Sunday. Pretty.

109
Left Kyoto 9:30 a.m. and arrived at Shimonoseki 8:40 p.m. Went on board of the Ko-an-Maru about 9:10 leaving the port a little past 10.
110
I was a little worried when 璋善 told me he couldn't get the boat-sleeper ticket for the 28th night, as the bigger boat was scheduled to leave on that date. But now I have to thank God and then our 璋善 for the change of that dates. (1) It rained so dismally on the 25th and the 26th that it would have made departure from Tokyo all the more harder if I had to leave on the 26th. (2) I had one more day for Tokyo and the 27th was such a glorious sunny day. (3) I had a day of rest in Kyoto and for Nara excursion. (4) The big boat, contrary to schedule, left Shimonoseki on the 29th instead of the 28th.

30. 10월 30일

112
30th. Monday. Beautiful.

113
Arrived at Fusan 6 a.m. Left Fusan for Akatsuki 6:30 a.m. with Dr. Ryang. Arrived at Seoul 1:30 p.m. Allen, Mary(文姬) and Myong-Hie with cousin Chi-Soh and his wife and others met me at the Station gladdening my heart with the news that everybody is well at home. Brother Chi-Wang took us to home in his auto. Thank God I have had a good and safe trip to and from Tokyo and had great joy of being with our precious 璋善 and 琦善 at their Tokyo home.

31. 10월 31일

115
31st. Tuesday. Cloud and sunshine.

116
Seoul home.
