프랑스 국립도서관과 ‘직지’ 전시 관련 대중강연 및 번역 지원하는 협약 체결
문화재청(청장 최응천)은 프랑스국립도서관(관장 로랑스 앙젤)과 11일 오후 5시(현지시각) 프랑스 파리에서 세계에서 가장 오래된 금속활자 인쇄본인 <직지>를 공개하는 특별전 ‘인쇄하다! 구텐베르크의 유럽(IMPRIMER ! L’EUROPE DE GUTENBERG)’(4.12.~7.16.)의 전시지원 및 학술적 협력을 위한 업무협약을 체결한다. * 프랑스국립도서관: 프랑스의 중앙국립도서관으로 루이 11세가 1480년에 창설한 왕실도서관에서 비롯되었으며 세계에서 가장 오래된 도서관으로 꼽힌다. 현재 <직지심체요절(直指心體要節)>(대한민국 1377년, 이하 ‘직지’)를 포함한 2,000여권의 한국 소장품이 있다.
주요 협약 내용은 ▲ 해당 특별전과 관련한 대중강연 개최, ▲ 전시 관련 이미지 제공 및 번역 등의 지원, ▲ 전시회 홍보를 비롯해 향후 프랑스국립도서관이 소장한 한국문화유산에 대하여 학술조사나 연구추진상호 협력 등이다. 이번 협약과 관련된 세부 업무는 문화재청 산하기관인 국외소재문화재재단(이사장 김정희)이 맡아 진행한다.
<직지>는 승려 백운(白雲, 1298-1374)이 고승들의 어록을 가려 엮고 그의 제자인 석찬(釋璨)과 달잠(達湛)이 간행한 불교서적으로, 참선을 통해 스스로 진리를 깨달을 수 있는 주제들과 선종불교의 진리를 담고 있어 제자들을 위한 교본으로 사용되었다. 정확한 명칭은 <백운화상초록불조직지심체요절(白雲和尙抄錄佛祖直指心體要節)>이며, <구텐베르크 성경>(독일, 1455년경)보다 무려 78년을 앞선 1377년에 청주 흥덕사(興德寺)에서 금속활자로 상하 2권이 먼저 인쇄되었다. 이후 1년 뒤 1378년 취암사(鷲巖寺)에서 목판으로 다시 인쇄되었으며 목판본 <직지>는 1992년 보물로 지정되어 현재 완전한 형태로 우리나라의 국립중앙도서관, 한국학중앙연구원에 상·하권이 보관되어 있다. 2001년 9월 4일에 유네스코 세계기록유산에 등재되었으며, 현재 프랑스국립도서관에서 소장하고 있는 것은 금속활자본 하권이다.
<직지>는 1886년 조불수호통상조약(朝佛修好通商條約) 이후 주한대리공사를 지낸 프랑스인 빅토르 콜랭 드 플랑시(Victor Collin de Plancy, 1853∼1922)가 수집하여 1900년 파리 만국박람회에서 최초로 공개 전시하였고 프랑스의 동양학자 모리스 쿠랑(Maurice Courant, 1853~1935)이 저술한 「한국서지」(보유판 1901년, 3738번)에 게재되었다. 플랑시가 죽은 후, <직지>를 구입한 예술품 수집가 앙리 베베르(Henri Vever, 1854∼1943)의 유언에 따라 프랑스국립도서관에 기증되었고, 1952년 프랑스국립도서관의 소장품 목록에 편입되었다.
1900년 파리 만국박람회 한국관 전시, 1972년 ‘세계 도서의 해’ 전시, 1973년 프랑스국립도서관의 ‘동양의 보물’ 전시에서 공개된 것을 마지막으로 그동안 <직지> 실물이 일반에 공개된 적이 없어 이번 공개는 무려 반세기 만의 일이다. 이번 특별전에서 <직지>는 첫 번째 유물로 소개된다.
문화재청과 국외소재문화재재단은 앞으로도 나라 밖 중요 유물의 발굴은 물론, 해외 현지에서 한국 문화유산의 우수성을 알리는데 지원을 아끼지 않고, 이를 통한 활발한 국제교류로 세계 속 우리 문화유산의 가치를 널리 알리고 함께 공유하는 데 최선을 다할 것이다.
On April 11, the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA; administrator: Choi Eung-chon) will sign an MOU at 5 pm (local time) with the Bibliothèque nationale de France (BnF; director: Laurence Engel) on exhibition support and related academic collaborations regarding the special exhibition of “Imprimer ! L’Europe de Gutenberg” (Apr. 12 to Jul.16) which reveals the world’s oldest book printed with movable metal-type – Jikji. * The BnF, France’s national library, is located in Paris. Its origin is generally traced back to the royal library founded by Louis XI in 1480, making it regarded as the world’s oldest museum. It owns approximately 2,000 Korean books, including Jikji Simche Yojeol (Republic of Korea, 1377; hereafter, Jikji). From April 12 through July 16, Jikji, the world’s oldest book printed with movable metal type, will be featured in a special exhibition (“Imprimer ! L’Europe de Gutenberg”).
The Agreement mainly deals with ▲holding conference or symposium in relation to the special exhibition, ▲support including providing the images and translation-related assistance necessary for the exhibition, ▲mutual cooperation not limited to carrying out promotional activities for the exhibition and conducting academic surveys and/or research projects in relation to Korean cultural heritage objects housed in BnF.
The teachings of Jikji were compiled by Paegun (1298-1374), a Buddhist priest, and printed by his disciples, Seokchan and Daljam. The book deals with topics on achieving self-enlightenment through meditation and, due to its coverage of the principles of Zen Buddhism, was used as a textbook for Buddhist priest trainees.
The original full title of Jikji is Paegun hwasang chorok buljo jikji simche yojeol (Anthology of Great Buddhist Priests' Zen Teachings). After its initial printing in two volumes with movable metal type at Heungdeoksa Temple in 1377, Jikji was printed with woodblocks at Chwiamsa Temple in 1378. The printing was 78 years earlier than the Gutenberg Bible (Germany, circa 1455). Today, the woodblock-printed version resides in Korea, in pristine condition, and was designated as a National Treasure by the Korean government in 1992. On September 4, 2001, it was included in UNESCO’s Memory of the World register as a cultural relic that embodies the excellence of Korean printing technology. The book currently owned by the BnF is the second of the Heungdeoksa Temple volumes. Jikji, which was originally part of the collection of Victor Collin de Plancy (1853-1922), a charge d’affaires with the French Embassy in Seoul who was also the first French minister dispatched to Joseon after the Korea-France Treaty of 1886, was displayed in public for the first time at the 1900 Paris Exposition and included in Maurice Courant’s (1853-1935) Bibliographie coréenne (1901 volume, No. 3738). After Collin de Plancy’s death, Jikji was purchased by art collector Henri Vever (1854-1943). In 1950, according to Vever’s will, Jikji was donated to the BnF and, in 1952, included in the BnF’s official collection register.
In the special exhibition, Jikji, which is being put on display for the first time in exactly 50 years, will be the first relic introduced. The actual book has been made available for public viewing on only three occasions in the past: at the 1900 Paris Exposition’s Korea Pavilion, International Book Year exhibition of 1972, and BnF’s “Trésors d’Orient (Treasures of the Orient)” of 1973.
The CHA and the Overseas Korean Cultural Heritage Foundation (OKCHF; chair: Kim Jung-hee) will continue to waste no effort in searching for important cultural artifacts that are currently located outside of Korea as well as promoting the merits of Korea’s cultural heritage properties in other countries. Through the international exchanges that will occur alongside such efforts, both organizations will do their utmost to heighten international awareness of Korea’s cultural and historical heritage properties.
