4.28(금) 개막식, 4.29(토)~5.7(일) 5대 고궁과 종묘·사직단에서 운영
문화재청 궁능유적본부(본부장 정성조)는 한국문화재재단(이사장 최영창)과 함께 <2023 봄 궁중문화축전>을 4월 29일부터 5월 7일까지 9일간 서울의 5대 고궁(경복궁·창덕궁·덕수궁·창경궁·경희궁)과 종묘·사직단 일대에서 개최한다.
‘궁중문화축전’은 아름다운 고궁을 배경으로 다채로운 전통문화 활용 콘텐츠를 선보여온 국내 최대 문화유산 축제이다. 작년 봄⸱가을을 합쳐 총 89만여 명의 관람객이 방문하여 큰 사랑을 받았는데, 올해는 코로나19로 멈추었던 일상이 회복되는 원년으로 화려한 봄날의 궁궐을 즐길 수 있어 더 많은 관람객이 찾을 것으로 기대된다.
이번 축전은 사전행사로 28일 오후 2시에 창경궁 일대에서 진행되는 ‘창경궁 명칭 환원 40주년 기념 퍼레이드’와 오후 7시 30분에 시작하는 경복궁 흥례문 광장에서의 화려한 ‘개막제’로 그 시작을 알린다. 개막제는 부채춤·처용무 등의 전통춤을 현대적으로 재해석한 개막 공연에 이어 전국 어린이합창단 합창, 고궁 뮤지컬 ‘세종 1446’ 출연진의 주제 공연 그리고 크로스오버 그룹 라포엠의 축하 공연으로 마무리 된다.
축전기간(4.29.~5.7.)에는 다양한 공연, 전시, 체험 프로그램이 준비됐다. 먼저, ▲ 창경궁에서는 창경궁 명칭 환원 40주년을 기념하여 ‘시간여행 - 영조, 홍화문을 열다(5.2.~6.)’가 기획되었는데 사전 공모를 통해 선발된 시민들과 함께 ‘영조 임금의 오순 잔치인 어연례(御宴禮)’ 재현행사를 완성하는 관객 참여형 프로그램이다.
5월 2일에는 ‘영조 오순 어연례’에 대한 관객 이동형 극이 펼쳐진다. 1일 2회 80분씩 진행되며, 사전 예약자들은 수신기(리시버)를 통해 창경궁 일대를 이동하며 극을 관람할 수 있다. 이동형 연극은 궁중문화축전 공식 인스타그램을 통해 실시간(라이브) 방송으로도 송출될 예정이다. 5월 3일부터 5일까지는 프로그램 사전 공모를 통해 선발된 궁중 새내기들(1일 180명 참여)이 ‘영조 오순 어연례’ 준비를 위한 음식·회화·무용 체험 프로그램에 참여한다. 체험 후에는 함인정 인근에서 궁중무용인 포구락을 배우는 시간에 이어 ‘장악원, 가객을 초빙하다’를 주제로 한 판소리, 탈춤, 소리꾼 등 전통 공연을 관람한다. * 1회차(10:00∼13:00), 2회차(13:00∼16:00), 3회차(15:00∼18:00) 회당 60명의 ‘궁중 새내기’ 참여예정 * 체험순서: ①입장 및 환복 →②체험(음식/회화 중 택1)→③체험(무용)→④공연 관람→⑤환복, 퇴장 * 포구락: 고려 문종 때 팔관회에서 추어진 궁중무용으로 채구를 던져 승부를 가리는 모습을 형상화했다.
프로그램의 마지막 날인 6일에는 60분씩 총 2회에 걸쳐 진행되는 어연례 재현 행사와 춘당지에서의 식후 공연이 펼쳐질 예정이다. 이 외에도 창경궁 영춘헌에서는 일반 현장관람객을 대상으로 문관과 나인 등 궁궐 증강현실(AR) 인물들의 복식을 입어보는 궁중복식 체험 프로그램도 상설 운영된다.
이외에도 각 궁궐에서 풍성한 볼거리가 가득 펼쳐진다. ▲ 경복궁에서는 ‘고궁 뮤지컬-세종 1446(4.29.~5.2. / 사전예약)’ 공연과 국악 신진 예술가와 크로스오버 밴드, 클래식 연주자 등 다양한 분야의 연주가들이 출연하는 ‘궁중풍류(5.3.~7. / 현장관람)’ 공연이 진행된다. 특히 7일에는 경복궁 야간관람과 연계하여 첼리스트 양성원이 출연하는 특별공연이 진행된다. 또한, 어린이날을 맞아 가족단위 관람객을 위한 ‘어린이 궁중문화축전(5.5.~7.)’ 프로그램이 진행되는데, 어린이 과거시험 · 궁중OX 퀴즈 등 체험 프로그램으로 구성했다.

▲ 덕수궁에서는 ‘아티스트가 사랑한 궁(5.5.~7., 오후 7시 30분)’ 공연이 개최된다. 덕수궁 중화전에서 선보이는 무료 공연으로, 1일차에는 작곡가 양방언 밴드, 2일차에는 크로스오버 밴드 ‘두번째달’과 김준수, 하윤주, 김무빈, 3일차에는 작곡가 겸 피아니스트 이루마가 출연한다.
축전 기간 중 운영되는 사전예약 프로그램의 예매는 4월 19일 오후 1시부터 티켓링크(www.ticketlink.co.kr)에서 순차적으로 진행된다. ▲ ‘고궁 뮤지컬 세종 1446’과 ‘낭만궁궐 기담극장’은 유료프로그램으로 각 회당 700석, 50석으로 운영된다. ▲ ‘궁중문화축전 개막제(4.28.)’, ‘어린이 궁중문화축전 문과 과거시험(5.5.~6.)’, ‘시간여행-영조, 홍화문을 열다 1일차(5.2.)’, 대한황실문화원 기획 프로그램인 ‘오얏꽃 개화만리(5.4.~6.)’, LG생활건강 연계 프로그램인 ‘궁중문화캠페인-창덕궁 약방 다과체험(4.29.~5.7.)’은 무료로 관람이 가능하나 반드시 사전에 예약을 해야 한다.
또한 4월 19일 오후 1시부터 23일까지는 이번 궁중문화축전 기간 동안 5대궁을 무제한 방문할 수 있는 특별 관람권 ‘궁패스’가 1,000매 한정으로 1만 원에 판매될 예정이다.
이 밖에도 궁중문화축전 기간 동안 5대 고궁에서는 판굿을 재구성한 ‘궁궐 퍼레이드’ 공연이 펼쳐진다. 창경궁은 4월 28일(금), 경복궁은 4월 29일(토), 창덕궁은 4월 30일(일), 경희궁은 5월 5일(금), 덕수궁은 5월 6일(토)에 진행된다.

The Royal Palaces and Tombs Center(Head Jeong Seong-Jo) at the Cultural Heritage Administration (CHA) and the Korea Cultural Heritage Foundation (President Choi Young-chang) will host the 2023 Spring K-Royal Culture Festival for nine days from April 29 (Sat) to May 7 (Sun) at five palaces in Seoul (Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, Deoksugung, Changgyeonggung, and Gyeonghuigung Palaces), Jongmyo, and Sajikdan.
The K-Royal Culture Festival is the largest cultural heritage festival in Korea, which has presented a variety of traditional culture contents across beautiful palaces. Last year, the festival attracted 1.36 million visitors in spring and fall combined. This year, the festival is expected to attract even more visitors as people can now enjoy the palaces this beautiful spring with things returning to normal after the COVID-19 pandemic.
■ The K-Royal Culture Festival will kick off with a fabulous opening ceremony at Gyeongbokgung Palace on April 28. The K-Royal Culture Festival will kick off with a wonderful opening festival on April 28 (Fri) at Heungnyemun Square in Gyeongbokgung Palace. On the day of the opening ceremony, the Commemorative Parade for the 40th Anniversary of ChanggyeonggungPalace’s Returned Name will be held for 40 minutes from 2:00 pm around Changgyeonggung Palace.
The opening ceremony is scheduled to begin at 7:30 pm at Heungnyemun Square in Gyeongbokgung Palace. The opening performance will feature a modern interpretation of traditional dances, such as the fan dance and cheoyongmu dance. It will be followed by a performance by a national children’s choir, and a thematic performance by the cast of Palace Musical: Sejong 1446, one of the programs on offer during the festival. The festival’s opening ceremony will conclude with a performance by La Poem, a male crossover vocal group.
■ Time Travel: King Yeongjo, Opening Honghwamun Gate to mark the 40th anniversary of Changgyeonggung Palace’s returned name. The signature program of the K-Royal Culture Festival is Time Travel: King Yeongjo, Opening Honghwamun Gate, which will be hosted at Changgyeonggung Palace. The program is planned to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Changgyeonggung Palace’s returned name as an audience interactive program where participants can take part in a reenactment of King Yeongjo’s 50th birthday.
Participants selected from pre-event applications will be allowed to participate in the reenactment and experience each step during the preparation process of the royal festival. The event will be held for five days (May 2 to 6).
On May 2, a historical reenactment about the story of King Yeongjo’s 50th Birthday Ceremony, where the audience can move around, will be performed. It will be held for 80 minutes twice per day, and those who book the reenactment earlier will be able to watch the reenactment via the receiver as they move around Changgyeonggung Palace. The reenactment will also be live-streamed on Official Instagram of K-Royal Culture Festival.
From May 3 to 5, New Court Members (180 participants per day) selected from pre-event applications in the program will participate in food, painting, and dance experiences to prepare for King Yeongjo’s 50th Birthday Ceremony. After the experiences, they will learn pogurak, a court dance, watch traditional performances. * For the 1st (10:00 to 13:00), 2nd (13:00 to 16:00), and 3rd (15:00 to 18:00) sessions, 60 New Court Members will participate per session. ** Experience sequence: (i) Enter and change clothing → (ii) Experience (food/painting) → (iii) Experience (dance and Civilian Singer performance) → (iv) Change clothing and leave ***Pogurak: It is a court dance performed at the Palgwanhoe during the reign of King Munjong of the Goryeo Dynasty, and it embodies the appearance of throwing a chaegu to decide the outcome.
▲ For the experience of Court Food, the program will prepare goimsang (meal for a special occasion) for King Yeongjo’s 50th Birthday Ceremony at the old site of Sookseolso (temporary kitchen), which is located near the well on the right side of Myeongjeongjeon Hall in Changgyeonggung Palace.
▲ For the experience of Court Painting, the program will reenact court festival paintings by historical court painting experts and allow visitors to draw palace paintings at Gyeongchunjeon Hall in Changgyeonggung Palace.
▲ For the experience of Court Dance, visitors can watch court performances, including hyangbal (traditional percussion instrument), near Tongmyeongjeon Hall in Changgyeonggung Palace, and learn how to perform pogurak.
▲ Around Haminjeong Pavilion in Changgyeonggung Palace, visitors will watch gugak (traditional Korean music) performances, including pansori, talchum, and sorikkun, by Civilian Singers invited to the palace under the theme of Jangakwon Inviting Singers.
The fifth day of the program will feature the reenactment of the King’s 50th birthday event and post-meal performances. The reenactment of the birthday event will be held twice per day for 60 minutes. After the reenactment, visitors can watch performances by the selected Civilian Singers and other celebratory performances at Chundangji Pond.
Furthermore, Yeongchunheon Hall in Changgyeonggung Palace will provide a permanent court clothing experience program where visitors can try on the clothing of various augmented reality (AR) court characters, who work in a palace.
■ Many things to see in Gyeongbokgung, Changdeokgung, and Deoksugung Palaces ▲ In Gyeongbokgung Palace, Palace Musical: Sejong 1446, a four-day performance, will be held from April 29 to May 2 (paid event with advance booking required). From May 5 to May 7, the program Children’s K-Royal Culture Festival, which consists of a variety of experiences such as Children’s Gwageo Exam (traditional civil service exam) and Palace True or False Quiz, will be held for visiting families to celebrate Children’s Day. Around Sujeongjeon Hall in Gyeongbokgung Palace, performers across different fields, including new gugak artists, crossover bands, and classical musicians, will showcase a performance called Court Music Entertainmentfrom May 3 to May 7. In particular, on May 7th, a special performance featuring cellist Yang Sung-won will be held in connection with the night tour of Gyeongbokgung Palace.
▲ In Changdeokgung Palace, Romantic Palace Gidam Theater, a travelling theater play based on novels stored in Nakseonjae Hall, will be performed for four days from April 30 to May 3 (paid event with advance booking required).
▲ In Deoksugung Palace, there will be a performance called Artists’ Loved Palace, featuring famous artists, at 7:30 pm for three days from May 5 to May 7. Free performances to be held near Junghwajeon Hall in Deoksugung Palace will feature Yang Bang-ean’s Band on the first day, crossover band 2nd Moon and Kim Jun-su, Ha Yun-juand Kim Moo-bin on the second day, composer and pianist Yiruma on the third day.
■ Advance booking program for K-Royal Culture Festival The advance booking program prior to the festival will be available from1pm on April 19on the Ticketlink website (www.ticketlink.co.kr). ▲ Palace Musical: Sejong 1446 and Romantic Palace Gidam Theater are paid programs with 700 and 50 seats available per session, respectively. ▲ The Opening Ceremony of K-Royal Culture Festival (April 28), Children’s K-Royal Culture Festival Gwageo Liberal Arts Exam (May 5 to 6), day 1 of Time Travel: King Yeongjo, Opening Honghwamun Gate (May 2), Plum Flower Blooming Miles (May 4 to 6), a program planned by the Dae Han Imperial House, and Court Culture Campaign-Refreshment Experience of Yakbang(The traditional pharmacy) in Changdeokgung(April 29 to May 7), a program presented in partnership with LG Household & Health Care, are available for free with advance booking required.
Furthermore, the special ticket Palace Pass, which allows unlimited visits to the five palaces during the festival, will be available for 10,000 won. The number of tickets will be limited to 1,000.
During the festival, Palace Parade Performance, which features pangut (Korean folk music), will be showcased in the five palaces. It will take place on April 28 (Fri) in Changgyeonggung Palace, April 29 (Sat) in Gyeongbokgung Palace, April 30 (Sun) in Changdeokgung Palace, May 5 (Fri) in Gyeonghuigung Palace, and May 6 (Sat) in Deoksugung Palace. And Oprating hours are different for each palace.
