‘1973, 천마를 깨우다’ 비전선포식 개최(5.4.) / 천마도 장니 공개 특별전 및 미디어아트도 운영
천마총, 향후 지역 경제 활성화에 기여할 세계적인 ‘K-관광’ 자원으로 성장 기대
문화재청(청장 최응천)은 5월 4일 오후 1시 30분 경주 대릉원 내 가설무대에서 천마총 발굴 50년의 성과와 발전을 되돌아보고 미래 백년을 다짐하기 위한 ‘1973, 천마를 깨우다’ 비전선포식을 개최한다.
천마총은 우리 손으로 직접 온전한 신라 고분을 제대로 발굴한 첫 사례로서 신라문화유산의 우수성을 입증하고 널리 알렸으며 우리나라가 문화유산 발굴 및 보존, 활용에 눈뜨게 된 계기로 평가받은 바 있다.
이와 같은 신라 문화의 상징인 천마총의 가치를 널리 알리고, 국민과 함께 기념하고자 기획된 이번 비전선포식은 천마총 발굴 이후 50년간 한국 고고학의 성장과 조사·연구 조직의 확대, 발굴 및 보존처리 방법의 고도화, 유적의 복원·정비 및 관리 역량 강화 등 변화와 발전을 거듭하며 만들어낸 그간의 성과를 바탕으로 ‘다시 한번, 미래를 향한 큰 파동’을 희망한다는 뜻의 “다시 보는 천마총 50, Silla-Wave Again”이라는 주제로 진행된다.
비전에는 천마총 발굴을 시작으로 이룩한 비약적인 성장과 국민의 넓은 관심을 바탕으로, 앞으로의 100년은 신라문화유산이 ‘K-헤리티지’의 중심에서 세계인이 찾고 주목하는 더 큰 ‘신라류(Silla-Wave)’의 파동을 일으키겠다는 힘찬 포부를 담았다.

비전선포식에는 1973년 당시 천마총 발굴 대표자를 비롯한 문화재청, 국립문화재연구원, 경상북도 및 경주시, 국립경주박물관 등 5개 기관장과, 지역 국회의원, 문화재청 문화재위원장 등이 주빈으로 참석하여 자리를 빛낼 예정이다.
국립경주문화재연구소는 천마총 발굴 50년을 기념하는 홍보영상을 기획‧제작하여 비전선포식에서 처음 공개한다. 세계적 댄스 크루인 저스트절크가 창작 ‧ 출연하는 이번 영상은 ‘천마’의 역동적인 모습 등을 ‘K-댄스’로 표현하였다. 천마총의 이미지를 브랜드화하고 우리 문화유산을 전 세계에 알리는 계기가 될 것으로 기대된다.
국립경주박물관에서는 5월 4일부터 ‘천마, 다시 만나다.’ 특별전을 개최한다. 자작나무 껍질 위에 그려진 ‘천마도’(天馬圖)는 빛에 약하기 때문에 상설전시에서 만날 수 없었으나 발굴 50주년 기념 특별전을 통해 총 2회(‘하’:5.4.~6.11 / ‘상’:6.12~7.16) 공개하며 이번이 신라 회화 걸작 ‘천마도’를 실견할 수 있는 뜻깊은 기회다. 또 한국 예술사진의 새로운 지평을 열었다고 평가받는 사진작가 구본창이 천마총 출토 유물을 촬영한 작품도 함께 선보인다. * 천마총 발굴 당시 백화수피제 말다래 2장이 상하로 겹쳐진 상태로 출토되었다. 그 중 상태가 좋은 말다래(하)가 많은 사람들에게 알려져 있는 천마도이다. 이번 전시에는 그동안 볼 수 없었던 말다래(상)이 2014년 이후 2번째로 공개된다.
경상북도와 경주시에서는 신라인의 이상과 꿈이 담긴 신라고분의 아름다움과 웅장함을 관람객들과 폭넓게 향유하고자 5월 4일(목)부터 한 달간 대릉원의 밤하늘을 화려하게 수놓을 ‘경주 대릉원 문화유산 미디어아트’(주최:경주시) 행사를 진행한다. 경주시는 5월 4일부터 대릉원의 입장료를 전면 폐지하고 무료 개방하며, 천마총 고분 내부는 미디어아트 행사 기간(5.4.~6.4.) 동안 무료로 운영한다.
문화재청은 정부혁신과 적극행정의 일환으로 시행하는 천마총 발굴 50년 ‘1973, 천마를 깨우다’ 비전선포식을 통해 앞으로도 우리의 중요한 문화유적이 대한민국의 역사성과 정체성을 확립하고 ‘K-관광’과 연계하여 지역경제 활성화에 크게 기여할 수 있기를 기대한다.
The Cultural Heritage Administration (Administrator Choi Eung-Chon) will hold a ceremony to declare the new vision for ‘Awaken, Cheonma 1973,’ where officials will look back at the achievement so far regarding Cheonmachong Tomb (National Treasure No. 207) and plan the next century. The ceremony will be held at 1:30 pm on May 4 at a stage set up in the Gyeongju Daereungwon Tomb Complex.
The Cheonmachong Tomb is considered the first-ever case in the history of Korean archaeology in which Koreans excavated a tomb from the Silla Dynasty (57 B.C.–A.D. 935) properly, on their own. The exploration not only proved the importance of cultural heritage of the Silla Dynasty but also opened Koreans’ eyes to the world of excavation, conservation and utilization of cultural properties.
The declaration ceremony is hoped to convey the value of Cheonmachong, the epitome of Silla’s rich culture, and celebrate Cheonmachong with everyone. In particular, the Cultural Heritage Administration wishes to highlight the remarkable advancement of Silla’s cultural heritage since the discovery of the Cheonmachongandstrive for more strides in the future. For this very reason, the ceremony’s theme is ‘Rediscovering Cheonmachong 50, Silla-Wave Again.’
‘Silla-Wave’ - a new vision marking the 50th anniversary of the discovery of Cheonmachong - embodies the strong determination to bring people and their attentionback to Silla and its culture once again and position it at the center of ‘K-Culture’ where people from all around the world would visit and adorein coming years. All this is considered possible because of the remarkable achievement since the discovery of the Cheonmachong 50 years ago as well as the Korean people’s continuing interest and support.

At the ceremony, representatives from the 1973 excavation will be present as well as the heads of theorganizations involved in conservation, research, maintenance and utilization of the Cheonmachong Tomb. They are Cultural Heritage Administration; National Research Institute of Cultural Heritage; Province of Gyeongsangbuk-do; City of Gyeongju; and Gyeongju National Museum, among others. Local lawmakers as well as the Head of the Committee for Cultural Heritage will also attend the ceremony.
Along with this, people will be able to view the Cheonmado Jangni - the famous painting of a heavenly horse on a saddle flap found in Cheonmachong – at a special exhibition at Gyeongju National Museum. The painting, made on the bark of a birch tree, was conserved and has been kept at the Gyeongju National Museum since. Due to its vulnerability to light, it has rarely been displayed in a permanent exhibition. In order to minimize its exposure, the bottom part of the Cheonmado Jangni will be displayed from May 4 to June 11 while the top part will be displayed from June 12 to July 16. Photographs of artifacts from the Cheonmachong Tomb taken by renowned Korean photographer Koo Bonchang will also be displayed at the exhibition.
* Archaeologists uncovered the Cheonmado Jangni painting made on the bark of a birch tree in two pieces, on top of each other. The painting most people have seen is the one on the bottom, which is in a better condition than the top one. The top part has been on public display only once, in 2014. With this, the upcoming exhibition will mark only the second time that the top part is being shown to the people.
In addition to this, a media art show will take place for a month starting May 4, lighting up the nighttime sky at the Gyeongju Daereungwon Tomb Complex, which is where the Cheonmachong Tomb is located. Hosted by the City of Gyeongju, the media art show is intended to show the Silla people’s ideals and dreams as well as the Silla tombs’ beauty and magnificence. The City of Gyeongju will abolishadmission charges to the Gyeongju Daereungwon Tomb Complex from May 4. They will also allow people to go inside the Cheonmachong Tomb free of charge during the media art show.
The vision declaration ceremony of ‘Awaken, Cheonma 1973’ is part of the Cultural Heritage Administration’s attempts to reform and be more active. With this, the Cultural Heritage Administration hopes to continue to build and foster the history and identity of Korea’s cultural heritage as well as connecting it with ‘K-Tourism’ and contribute to vitalizing local economies.
