Seoul home. Sent ￥300.00 to our two boys in Tokyo. In my late trip to Japan I felt that the pervading characteristics of Japan, its houses, its people are their neatness, lightness and artistic-ness. The shrines whether Buddhistic or Shintoistic appeared to share the general characteristics of the people. The multitude of women and men who go to the Shrines seemed to go there to meet a friend all merciful and all for giving and not to propitiate a terrible god who thunders for the burning and sulphurous denunciations. The Jewish conception of God terribly in anger and intolerant of different beliefs, demanding bloody sacrifices of cattle, sheep, goats. Such a terrible and intolerant good would quite out of place or harmony in Japan. Japan's contribution to Christianity will be to emphasize the attribute of the God of 103rd Psalm: Who forgiveth all our iniquities, healeth all our diseases, redeameth our liyes and crowneth us with unconditional loving kindness and tender mercies.

Seoul home. From 6 p.m. with wife, 明姬, and 李恩卿 went to the Citizens' Hall to see or rather hear the singers said to represent all parts of Korea. The hall was full but not with a refined crowds. The performance was long and I didn't like it very much.

Seoul home. The three great totalitarian States of Europe―the beastly Russia, the Nazi German and the Fascist Italy―use terrorism as the foundation of their despotic and super autocratic One-man power. As terrorism must depend on efficient high-police, detective system has to be perfected. But a thorough detective system needs a thorough espionage. That has turned the whole nation, Russia or Italy, or Germany into a nation of spies, spies in primary schools, spies in high schools, spies in colleges and universities in fact in every walk of life. Nobody trust his neighbor. Bad men use this universal espionage as means of extorting money or of revenging private grievances. Under such a system of Government nobody feels any security of life and property. From what one reads or hears Stalin and Hitler are two men who fatten on terrorism.

When one thinks or rather knows what Russia has been doing in the last 50 years, he can't help wishing some great power might give the bloody Bolshevists a sound and crushing beating. As long as Russia goes unpunished there will be no peace in the East.

Seoul home. Allen tells me that our cousin No.4 has also decided to live in Seoul. So has cousin No.5. Thus the old village, Sai-mal is actually deserted by all of us. Yet the village is so out of the way and the means of transportation etc. are so poorly provided that those who have children and old parents have to move to cities where schools and doctors are available.

Under the auspices of Central Y. the 11th lifting-power contest was held in the Y. gymnasium. Even the simple program was by the order of the police, solemnized by or with the (1) singing of "Kimigayo"; (2) the bowing toward the East; (3) and the repetition of the Oath of Loyalty.

Seoul home. 3 p.m. went to the Normal Primary School for Girls to see the Spring Field Exercises. The Parents Association of the school had its second Annual Meeting after the field day events were over about 5:30 p.m. The Association invited the Principal of the Female Normal School and the teachers of the Primary School, 11 in all, to a simple supper in the little Library Hall about 7:30.

Seoul home. The new-born Chosun Christian Union celebrated its birth in the large Citizens' Hall auditorium from 2 p.m. Mr. Niwa, the Chairman of the Union Committee presided. Congratulatory addresses by the Director of Education Bureau, the Governor of the Kyong-Ki Province and the Mayor of Seoul were all listened to with interest by the big crowd. The long program lasted nearly 3 hours.

Rev. Cha informed me that Hugh Cynn and his crowds who had been busy holding secret meetings for the last two months elaborated a plan for the establishment of a Pan-Asian Association with the objective of anti-occident and pro-Orient movement. If so I don't see why the scheme should have been kept so secret under the paternal wings of the Police Department.

Seoul home. 4:30 p.m. about 20 Korean and Japanese Christians met at the Japanese Y. to hold a thanksgivings service for the successful birth of the Chosun Christian Union―uniting the Japanese and Korean Christians for common work. Then a discussion as the means and ways of getting the country churches to join. The Union followed 95% of the men present. Seemed to feel no special interest in the matter.

Seoul home. 3 p.m. went to the Kyong Sung Normal School to attend a meeting of Executive Committee of the Parents' Association of the Korea Primary School, to prepare the program of the Annual Meeting of the Association to be held at 2 p.m. next Saturday.

The new born Chosun Christian Union(朝鮮基督敎 聯合會) would have conveyed its real meaning had it been called the "Union of the Japanese and Korean Churches in Korea." While some Korean pastors and others are enthusiastic about the Union, so called, as it abolishes the distinctions between the Japanese and Korean Churches to harmonize with the spirit of the "Oneness of Korea and Japan"(內鮮一體) , others take it as a means of saving the Korean Churches from constant suspicion and consequent maltreatment from the police officials all over the country. But the vast majority of Korean Christians look upon the Union as a first step toward the amalgamation of the Korean Churches into the Japanese Churches. Hence the positive disapproval and apathy with which the Union is regarded by Koreans. The Japanese leaders ought to be thoughtful and tactful in managing the Union. The Japanese are aggressive. Twenty odd years ago I staged a Japanese-Korean concert in the Central Y. under the joint auspices of the Japanese and Korean Y.'s From the start, Mr. Matsumoto, took charge of the program without a word of apology and conducted the whole meeting as if there were no Korean Y. That ended any attempt at co-operation for 22 years. Will the Japanese do better with the Union?

Seoul home. Brother Chi-Chang invited our uncle and cousin, Chi-Soh and Chi-Byong and Chi-Myong and their wives to lunch at his foreign home. Wife and I and Myong Hie also invited. After lunch uncle gave a very wise advice or admonition to brother Chi-Chang on the unwisdom of having homes too luxurious for one's income. "Don't you think This house is too good for you?" he asked Chi-Chang who had to answer "yes." I do really wish he and his wife were a little more modest in their ambition to live like an American rich man. Already they have seven servants. Thus they have to keep up two modes of house keeping, one Korean for the Korean dependents and another Foreign for themselves. Their too luxurious living―too luxurious for a Korean―is having a bad effect on the women folks and little children of our homes!

Arriving there at 12:30, went to the village and showed 尹 the repairs etc. to be made in the house I had bought from Mrs. Yi Un Kyong and Mr. Hong Byung Sun. Returned home by the 5:29 p.m. train reaching home nearly 10.

1:30 went to the Kyeijo Normal School to attend the Parents' Association of the Boys' Primary School. 3 p.m. went to the Social Center to attend the ceremony of laying the keystone of the new building.

5:30 with brother Chi-Chang went to 天香園庄 to entertain Mayor Sayeki to a Korean supper. Messrs. 曺秉相 and 金思演 also guests. The rascal Jung Jai Hup whom the Mayor call his dear brother of different surname. The Mayor drank and danced as if he really enjoyed the supper. The entertainment cost me ￥91.00 + tip ￥9.00 making ￥100.00 in all.

Left Seoul with 明燮 7:50 a.m. for On Yang Hot Springs. As soon as reached the station we drove to old On Yang to pay our respect to our parents' grave. As rain began to fall we had to hurry back to the Springs. After a refreshing bath and a hearty lunch we left the Springs 1:52 and boarded the express at Chun An 2:40. Arrived at home about 5.

Seoul home. The C.C.C. has been in trouble for the last two months. Three of its teachers have been jailed for having contributed Communistic book to the Library. Yesterday the whole College was searched for questionable books. Mr. Yu Ok Kyum's house also searched. Jung Kwang Hyon, my son-in-law's was searched also last evening. This morning he, and Yi Choon Ho taken to the Police Station. It seems it is the policy of th Government to abolish the C.C.C. or at least to take it out from the missionary control.

Mr. Han Kyu Bok(韓圭復) told me this morning that he had met the Chief of West Gate Police Station and asked him to deal generously with Jung Kwang Hyon for my sake, and that the Chief agreed with him etc. That was about 9:30. It is 2:10 now but no news. The trouble is the whole C.C.C. arrests is a part of benevolent policy of the Powers that be, to crush the mission owned institution. Many a graduates having jobs in banks and business companies have been arrested on charge of propagating Communistic principles! Here after what teacher will dare to teach in the C.C.C. and what young man will care to graduate from it? Cousin Chi-Yung arrested and taken to the West Gate Police.

Seoul home. Had a chat with Mr. Niwa at his room in the Japanese Y. He agrees with me and others that it is a terrible thing for the poor Koreans that the 4 Police Stations in Seoul are vying with each other to make the best records for themselves. The Hon Machi Station got the public and official laudation―and justly for unearthing the fearful subterranean and diabolic doings of the Paik Kyo which under the pretension of a religion ravished and then murdered hundreds of girls and other to keep their secrets. The Chong No Station carried off a doubtful palm last year by smashing up Hung Sa Dan or Ahn Chang Ho's Club. The West Gate Station dying with envy has started the present campaign against C.C.C. In order to make their case justifiable they beast, kick a victim and pour water through the nose and get a confession so called. On the basis of this confession they arrest new men and go on so doing until they think they have gotten a good record. God help us poor Koreans who have to endure these terrors and have no body to appeal to for help! No body dares to tell these truths to the Government General.

Called on Mr. O-ta 7:30 a.m. He said he had told Mr. Kondo, the Private Secretary of the Governor General, to give me a chance to talk to the General about the uneasiness which the Korean Christians are feeling on account of the indiscriminate arrests the West Gate Higher Police have been making. He approved heartily my intention of what my view-point is about my entering the Privy Council.

9:30 called on Major GeneralKitano at the Army of Korea Headquarters and gave him a cheque for ￥5,000.00(￥4,000.00 for National Defence Fund and ￥1,000.00 for the invalid allied soldiers. He and everybody in his office thanked me cordially. I contributed the same―as a congratulatory donation on the Japanese victory at 徐州 where near 500,000 Chinese soldiers had been amassed. This battle is regarded as one of the greatest Japanese forces have had in China, so far.

From 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. there were grand celebrations "Reporting Service(奉告祭) " in the holy of the holies of the Chosen Shrine by the High Shinto Priest and then a Mass Congratulatory Meeting(祝賀) all in commemoration of the great Suchow(徐州) battle. The Mayor in his speech said the battle was greater than the Funtain Battle in Russo-Japanese War as regard to extent of front number of men engaged etc.

Seoul home. (1) Last Jan. Kim Tai Woo told Ryang that Hugh Cynn had offered to concoct a certain plan if the authorities would back him. (2) Hugh Cynn help nocturnal conferences with his right hand men―Sim M.S., Jun P.S. and at his home for over a month. (3) When the Chief of the Chong No Police asked Cynn what he was doing in the secret conferences, Cynn told the Police that as he, the Directors of Police and Education Bureaus had all three agreed not to divulge the plan or plans until they are perfected, he wasn't at liberty to say anything about what he was doing. (4) Rumors have been rife for the last 6 months that Cynn had been planing something to annulate the foreign influence in Korea and to revenge himself on his enemies, 兪 O.K., Kim Helen, Koo J.O., Hong P.S. etc. (5) Just before the day when the Christian Union was to be celebrated, a Gendarmery detective came to me and asked if the proposed union scheme would conflict with Hugh Cynn's plans. (6) The Gendarme man told Koo J. O. that Cynn proposed plan was to be anti-Western and Pro-East. As the C.C.C., Y.M.C.A. and Pai-Wha School are already under the clutch of the cruel West Gate Higher Police, rumor goes the round that the Ewha College is to be attacked next. Then is this dirty work really the carrying out Hugh Cynn's plans under the protection of the powerful directors of the Police and of Education?

He appeared to understand my situation and said something to the effect that as Mr. Toyama in Japan does more as a private individual than he would have done as an official he hoped I do likewise.

Yesterday afternoon in my interview with General Minami, I assured him that the Korean Christians will work in harmony with the "All-Nation" Co-operation Movement―especially as the Union of the Japanese and Korean Christians in Korea has come into being. General Minami emphatically said that he would regard what is past as blank paper.

A chat with Kim Tai Woo. I told him it was very odd that so soon after the assurance which Mr. Tanaka, the Chief of Higher Police Section of the Provincial Police Dept. had given to the pastors and other Korean Christian leaders that everything past would be regarded as a blank paper(白紙) , that he would give all assistance in their legitimate work etc. only a few bays after this, Koo Ja Ok, Hong Pyong Sun, Jung Choon Soo were arrested and jailed by the West Gate Police. Kim seemed to be surprised and promised he would see the Public Safety man about it(?) .

Hugh Cynn sent me word through 黃泳洙 asking me to dismiss the present staff of Central Y.―Koo and Hong included of course, saying that alone would placate the West Gate deities. Now this is almost a conclusive evidence that the dirty work the West Gate Police has been doing against C.C.C. and Central Y. has been plotted by H. C. 2－4 p.m. 省齊育英會 審査會.

Seoul home. At the request of Hugh Cynn I had an interview with him at Yedogawa where we had supper together. I may condense his talk into 4 propositions: (1) We, 3 or 4 hundred thousand Christians are living under circumstances very different from those of the days of Terauchi and Saito. The present Japanese rulers are going to copy the methods of Hitler and Stalin to weed out all whom they think to be half hearted toward Japan. (2) He had prepared a plan to which the Commander-in-Chief of the Army of Korea, the Governor General and the Director of the Police, affixed their seals of approval. But the advent of the Christian Union, so called, put a break on the Plan for the time being. (3) For the sake of the hundreds of thousands of Christians, he said I ought to place myself in line with the authorities. (4) The plan to be successful ought to go through the channels of Kim Tai Woo and of the Public Safety man. When I asked Hugh Cynn what his plan was like he evaded the question. I had to tell him that I would co-operate with him when the rulers call on me for so doing.

Cynn further suggested we might organize a visiting delegation representing the entire Christian Churches of Korea to visit the Japanese troops in North China with a band of barbers to trim the hair of the soldiers etc.

Myong Sup-i has gotten a copy of the Census Bureau Statement that Jung Jai Hup and Jang Jai Okie(his wife) had secured a legal permit for "Divorce by mutual agreement(協議離婚) on the 22nd February, 1938. But Jai Okie doesn't know anything about it the rascal Jung Jai Hup must have forged her seal not only, but also took some other woman pretending to be Jai Okie. Jai Hup is such a poisonous snake I wish the law will teach him a lesson without our taking any hand in it.

Seoul home. For what offence has cousin Chi-Yung been arrested? is still a puzzle. Someone suggests that Koo Ja Ok gave a list of names of the Chung Koo(靑邱) Club members to Chi-Yung to ask them to donated the money they have now in the Club to the Central Y. as the Club has to be disbanded. A spy (Cynnite) seeing the transaction at once informed either Cynn or the West Gate Police and had Chi―Yung arrested. The list supplied the names of victims desired viz: Koo, Hong, Yi M. K. whom Cynn hates perhaps next to Yu Ok Kyum. But the arrest of pastor Jung Choon Soo because he is a member of the Hugh's Club－is that a part of the plan to weaken the Christian Union which the Gendarme Detective said to be in confliction with Cynn's plans?

Seoul home. Through Whang Yung Soo who has been C.'s spy in the Central Y.C. sent words to me (1) to call a meeting of the Central Y. Board of Directors; (2) to have them appoint me the Acting General Secretary; (3) that I should send 20 or 30 men all over the country to solicit the moral and material support of the Churches in organizing and sending the visiting delegation to North China.

I had to tell Whang that I couldn't possibly take the arduous position of the General Secretary, that Y.M.C.A. has no right to mobilize the Churches: that the Churches in the Provinces wold never pay any attention to my request; that the proper body which has the right to mobilize the Churches in this kind of enterprise being the new Christian Union; I would gladly sign a plan with him to present it to the Union. This crafty C. wants to use me as his cat's paw.

In Mr. Niwa's office I met Mr. Hagawa, a Christian M.P. Mr. N. and I gave him some idea of the terrible situation we Korean Christians are in Mr. H. was very much sympathetic when we told him that the Police had promised the Christians that what they had done up-to-date would be regarded as blank paper. Then the arrests!

Seoul home. At Mr. Niwa's invitation went to Chosun Hotel 8 a.m. to have breakfast with Mr. Hagawa the M.P. and Mr. Saito, the General Secretary of the Tokyo Y.M.C.A. Mr. Hagawa said he had interviewed the Governor General yesterday. To the question why the Christians who helped to organize the Christian Union were told one day that what they had done before the day of Union would be regarded a "clean sheet" or blank paper(白紙) and were arrested the next day, the General suavely said that all pardonable misdeeds were to be regarded as blank paper but that they couldn't be let go free for any act or word that endangered the Public Safety Regulations. I told Mr. Hagawa that the clubs which are under fire now were organized when Admiral Saito was the Governor General. Three Governor Generals have come and gone during last 15 years, yet no charge of breaking the Public Safety Regulations had ever been brought against the members of the clubs.

At 10 a.m. went to Y. and after consultation with Mr. Barnhart, we asked Key Pyong Ho to act as "transactor of the Secretary's business" during his absence(事務取扱) , we then decided to convene a meeting of the Board of Directors of the Central Y.

Pastor Kim Woo Hyon told me that Cynn's men, Sim Myong Sup, Jung Pil Soon(the thieves who stole the Christian Messenger in the open day light) have been visiting the leading Japanese pastors trying to prejudice them against the Christian Union.
