Seoul home. Called on Bishop Moore at Dr. Anderson's home 9:30 a.m.

The Bishop told me that the foreigners residing in the city of Nankin had fully expected that the discipline and efficiency of the Japanese troops would bring order and safety as soon as they occupied the city. But the foreigners were sadly disappointed when they saw the utter break down of discipline among the Japanese soldiers who looted houses, raped women of all ages from 14 to 60, killing the Chinese upon the least provocation―in fact on no provocation at all―.

Seoul home. Entertained Mr. Jo Joon Ho, the elder brother of our son-in-law to a home made lunch at 12.

6 p.m. went to the Boid Grand Restaurant where Dr. Ryang gave a dinner party in honor of Bishop Moore. Nearly twenty Methodist missionaries―men and women―were present.

Seoul home. 5 p.m. a banquet was given by a number of citizens of the city led by the Mayor to the Chinese consuls and the heads of the Chinese guilds who have lately come out as adherents of the Provisional Government of North China. Mr. Pom Han Saing(范漢生) the Chinese Consul-Genl. led the movement. To burn the last bridge between the Chinese in Korea and the old Nanking Government, Mr. Pom publicly burned the "Sun and Blue"(靑天白日) flag of Chiang Kai Seik's Government. But what could the Chinese officers in Korea do for the protection of the 20 or 30 thousand Chinese who are in various lines of occupation in Korea? On the whole I can't blame the Chinese consuls for having adopted this expediency.

Seoul home. 2:15 p.m. went to the Farmers' Cultural Institute(農民修養所) to preside over the closing exercises of the Institute.

This morning I called on Han Sang Ryong and told him that it is a fact that Hugh Cynn had consented to concoct a plan or plot(whatever it may be) concerning or against the Christian institutions in Korea. Those of us who are directly or indirectly connected with the Christian Churches are uneasy because we all know that Cynn is by nature a plotter.

Seoul home. In my conversation with Han S. R. I said we have 3 reasons for distrusting Cynn: (1) Outside of some sort of plans affecting the Christian Institutions in Korea we can't see for what else Cynn could have offered his service to the Government. (2) If so, Cynn should have consulted with Dr. Ryang, the head of the Methodist Church and the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church instead of holding secret meetings with men who are well known among us as unscrupulous intriguers. (3) Whatever may be the plan or a plot Cynn and his crowd are formulating under the protection of the Director of Education―a protection so powerful that the policy itself can't interfere with Cynn's meetings―Cynn must figure in it as its Mussolini or Hitler. In other words Cynn will take this opportunity to capture the Methodist Church government and the Y.M.C.A. movement in Korea for his own aggrandizement. Hadn't Cynn tried but failed to drive Ryang out of the Superintendency four years ago? His dirty tricks to seize the Central Y.M.C.A. two years ago and his temporary failure are will known to us. Han still advised me to see General Mianmi about it. But I don't see what good I can do by seeing the General.

Pale sun a.m. Went to the Mayor's office where a number of Koreans and Japanese met with the Mayor to discuss how and when to celebrate the Imperial sanction expected to be given in a few days to the Government measure of granting to the Koreans the privilege of being recruited as volunteers in the Imperial Army. A Committee was named to meet in the same office at 11 day after tomorrow to perfect the plan and its details. Lunch at the Mayorial dining room.

Called on Mr. Ahn Chang Ho in the University Hospital. He was reduced to a mere skeleton. We were glad to see each other.

Seoul home. 10 a.m. went to the Ewha College with Dr. Ryang to attend the Annual Meeting of the Board of Directors. Lunch at the College dinning room. Returned home about 4 p.m.

12:30 a mass celebration of the 50th anniversary of the promulgation of the Constitution of Japan. This being the 2,598th anniversary of the Founding the Empire by Zimmu-teno. A simple cold banquet followed. From the Shrine Dr. Oh, and I went to the office of the Governor of Kyongki Province to receive the Imperial donation(￥500.00) to the Orphanage and ￥100.00 to the old people's Asylum. The ceremony lasted nearly an hour. Returned home 3 p.m. with a bad cold.

Seoul home. This being the 3rd Anniversary of the death of our mother we, our children from Song Do, our cousins and brothers had a family reunion at 4 p.m. Rev. Cha Jai Myong conducted the service with prayer, Bible reading(from her old New Testament) . Had supper together. Our aunt 87 years old still keeping all senses intact, sweet and gentle gave our gathering joy and dignity. Then we enjoyed the moving pictures in which our mother walked and talked, as if she were actually with us.

Seoul home. Mr. Kim Sung Soo's father a very sensible and interesting old man has the strange habit of keeping his favorite "banchans" such as salted fish, hot-red pepper mixtures of all kinds―all in his closet so that his room otherwise nicely fixed has the smells of a Korean pantry. His odd habit is a matter of ridicule but I can understand it. He is a widower. If he gave his choice "ban―chans“ to his daughter-in-law or servants they would eat them up in no time. Thus an old man over 75 or so must take some self-protective measure for his own comforts. If he has a wife as old as he, she can't be of much use to him in the way of sweet ministrations. If she is young why she would seek her own pleasure and satisfaction with some other fellow. She may be thanked if she doesn't hate him positively ready to put some poison in his coffee or medicine if he happens to be too much in her way. I can understand why my friend Old Mr. Kim, stays a widower.

Seoul home. This morning 8:10 our beloved aunt passed away―in clear mind up to the minute. When she was at our home the night of the 12th, she looked the picture of well-aged health. I thought she was good enough for another 10 years. Just a week after that and she is no more! In her dies one of the luckiest women in Korea. During her long life she never experienced any of the nerve-racking and heartrending emergencies such as my mother had to pass through. Of her five sons the first and third gave her much to worry about, but her second son has shielded her from any acute suffering enabling her to live in comfort, and to die in peace.

Seoul home. Had so long abstained from bathing that I felt miserable with stickiness. With Myong Suhi went to the Electric Bath house (so called) 2 p.m. and had a refreshing bath.

Seoul home. My cold still lingers so that I can't go out in the icy cold air without feeling being chilled. Went to cousin Chi Soh's home 4 p.m. to attend the ceremony of putting on mourning dresses.

9 a.m. the funeral service for our aunt was held in the An-Dong Church 10:10 a.m. The hearse followed by 26 auto's left Seoul For Pyong Taik. Arrived at the family cemetery about 1 p.m. The burial service etc. etc. came to end about 4:30. My brothers, Chi-Wang and Chi-Chang with Allen, Candler and me left Pyong Taik 5 to 5 p.m. in Chi-Wang's private car. Reached home about 7:30―Just 10 days ago our aunt was so bright and healthy. Whoever thought she would be in her grave today? What a dream―what a vanity! There were 5,000 or more sight seers who had to be fed by the mourning family!

Seoul home. Mr. Nakamura, Chief of the Higher Police Bureau of Kyong Ki Province called about 10:30 this morning. He suggested that I should consent to enter the Privy Council, so called, repeated the same arguments or reasons why it would be best for the Government and me to let me stay un-officered. If the Government wants to give me an official position because I am supposed to have some reputation among the Koreans, that reputation would vanish the moment I accept an office.

The other day as the hearse bearing the remains of our aunt was leaving the Church forever, a young crazy woman, clean shaved like a Buddhist nun, spoke loud enough to be heard by the crowd thus: "Woman spends her life in being deceived by man. Man spends his life in being deceived by woman. Both spend their lives in deceiving and in being deceived by each other. In 50 years they all go like that," pointing the hearse. What a cynical yet true-to-life statement!
