Seoul home. Our baby 珽善 had a tooth pulled out by Dr. An Jong Suh as the dentist said. No way to keep the pus from the decayed tooth infecting other teeth in the row. The poor little fellow suffered intensely. Dr. An has set up a new office all newly equipped. He is regarded to be one of the best in the profession. But the dirty way he keeps things in the operation room is simply sickening. What a contrast to the scrupulous cleanness in which everything is done and kept in Dr. Mishina's office! No soap, no clean napkin, no clean towel no clean cup in An's office. An had practiced in the Severance Dental Dept. years before he set up for himself last Spring.

A Korean supper at 明月館 for the double purpose of welcoming Dr. Cynn home and of bidding farewell to Mr. Barnhart who is to leave Seoul for America next Saturday.

Seoul home. Dr. Hugh Cynn, this morning surprized me by asking me to lend him ¥10,000.00 to buy the right of publishing the Chosen Il-Po from a 林慶來. Cynn thinks that with that right in his hand he could rehabilitate that paper etc. Now it is a notorious fact that by series of mismanagement and factional quarrels and by embezzling time and again, relief fund entrusted to its care, the paper had to be suspended after its editor 安在鴻 and its Business Manager 李昇福 were arrested for fraudulent use of public funds. The building, the press, the right of publication are mortgaged to three different persons. To get that paper out of the deep quick mire, even a Cynn will need at least 50 or 60 thousand yen, not in promises but in hard cash. If I had that much spare money I can find far more useful works to help than fooling with a paper that has ruined 申錫雨, 安在鴻, 洪承均, 兪鎭泰, 閔衡植, 崔善益 of Song Do wasted over a hundred thousand yen on the paper, though nobody seems to know the exact amount of his loss. Of course Cynn will have to finance the enterprise with somebody else's money so that if he loses the other fellow will lose, and if he gains he will gain.

Went to 龍鳳亭 restaurant on the Southern shore of the Han-Kang at 4 p.m. having been invited to a Korean supper party given by the teachers of the night school of the Central Y. 7 a.m. had to go to the Bright Moon Restaurant to be one of the score or more Koreans who invited Messrs. Iwasa, the commander of the Gendarmes and Iketa, the Director of the Police Dept. to a Korean entertainment. Sake and kisaing as usual. Quitely slipped out about 10. Rain all night.

Seoul home. Today's paper reports that three detectives beat Kwon Tai Ha, the Korea Marathon runner on the ferry boat at Fusan on the ground that he was impudent in his language. I feared that the Japanese would do some-thing of the kind to vent their hatred against the Korean who had dared outrun all the Japanese Marathon aspirants in the last preliminary contest. The Japanese can be chivalrous and even generous to their proteges. They are dangerously treacherous to their rivals especially when the rivals happen to belong to another race―a weaker race. The Japanese vanity must have been hurt to the core by the fact that two Koreans had to be elected as the first and the second men in the Marathon contest in the coming Olympic Games to be held in Los-Angeles. I wouldn't be surprized if the Japanese will resort to some trick that will put Kwon altogether out of the list between now and the great game. Whatever may be the virtues of the Samurai character―and they are many too―, sportsmanlike generosity is not one of them.

Dr. Hugh Cynn has returned from his last trip to America with a plan for a new movement or organization among the youths of Korea. He has devised five principles and twenty-one rules for the new movement. The principles are such that Christians and non-Christians can join the movement. All good. But all genuine movements seldom start with written statements first. They begin with life and then creeds and rules are added on to them as clothes are put on babies, grammars on languages. Besides we have organizations enough and principles enough and rules enough, all enough to spare.

Seoul home. Went to the dinner party at the residence of the Gov.-Genl. given by him in honor of Mr. Yasuoka, the young scholar who is trying to revive the Confusian principles of life and conduct among the Japanese. He is intensely nationalistic and is hence in high favor with the military leaders of the day. All good: but the tide of unrest and of Bolshevism can't be stemmed until the mass of the people is relieved from actual starvation or the fear of it. And that will never be done as long as the last copper of a poor farmer or of an artisan is taken to make poison gas and bullets for the next great war. Empty stomachs have no room for precepts or sermons.

21. 6월 21일

67
21st. Tuesday. Cloudy―Cool.

68
Seoul home. Fine rain drops now and then.
69
The Saturday Club(土曜會) entertained Mr. Yasuoka to a Korean supper at the 天香園別莊 outside of the Small East Gate. The supper didn't begin until 7―Wine and kisaing and usual. Came home thoroughly tired in body and mind after ten. Mr. Yasuoka is a remarkable young man in his way. He believes modern system of education turns out, in mass production, slaves of science and not rulers of men. He is a typical Japanese scholar clean, sharp but humorless and even heartless looking like a Japanese blade. Wish he didn't drink so much.

22nd. Wednesday. Cloudy. Cool a.m.

72
Seoul home. 9:30 p.m. Mr. Miwa of the Police Dept. called on me. He brought with him a man whom I could not recognize. I was perfectly astounded to know that he was Mr. An Chang Ho who had been undergoing a minute examination in the detention cell by Mr. Miwa himself. Mr. An has changed so much during the 27 years that I could never have known him without introduction. We were glad to see each other once again. Mr. M. told me that they had been to a dentist(咸錫泰) to get An's teeth fixed; that as they passed by my house he (Miwa) thought they might give me a surprize by dropping in and say "Howdie" to me. I thanked Mr. M. for his thoughtful kindness.

23rd. Thursday. Cloudy―Cool.

Seoul home. 7:30 p.m. went to 明月館 to the Korean supper party given to a few missionaries by 彰文社 to inform them of the origin purpose and future of the Company asking them to patronize it so as to enable it to become really a Christian Publishing House in the city. They―missionaries―Dr, Avison, Messrs. Bonswick,Koons, two Salvation Army men, Misses Wagner and Hall―listened to the story and appeal with a deal of interest and sympathy. The trouble is that the Koreans, who are working in the C.L.S. and the B.F.B.S. etc, will not give printing matters to any publisher who do not bribe or tip them. The 彰文社 used to print the War Cry of the Salvation Army. The Korean official―李寅榮?―demanded that three of his own men be employed by the Company at higher rates of wage than other work men. The Korean practicing such corrupt business tricks―as dishnoest as the worst of non-Christian men―wonder that Christianity doesn't make a head way among the people!

Left Seoul 7:40 train for 大田 arriving there a little after 11:30. Mr. 金甲淳's man and two sons met me and other guests from Seoul and took us to the Taiden Hotel. We were treated to a "Yang Yo Ri" lunch which consisted in two dishes―shrimp tempura and chicken tempura―plus a cup of coffee which was nothing but baked peas. At 2:30 p.m. were conducted in autos to the Yu Sung Hot Springs. Mr. 金甲淳 owns the old Springs. He has built a nice house on the bank of an artificial lake and a villa on an artificial island. This being his 61st birthday he has been entertaining his numberous guests at his Kong-Ju residence as well as at the Springs. His extravagance is famous throughout the South Choong Chung Do. Rumor says, according to Mr. 金寬鉉 who ought to know the truth, that he has mortgaged all his land and house to the Industrial Bank to the amount of ¥1,800,000.00. Returned to Seoul by the 6 p.m. train reaching home about 10:40.

Seoul home. A few of the old Anglo-Korean School(韓英書院) boys invited me to supper at 大亞舘 restaurant 金東成, 白南奭, 柳百熙, 金俊玉, 安承煥, 李春昊 present. A pleasant time from 4:30 to 7 p.m.

Dr. Cynn a few days ago, told Mr. Koo Ja Ok something as follows: Mr. Jang Jik sang, Mr. C's son-in-law's father promised Cynn that he would persuade Im Kyung Nai(林慶來) to transfer the right of publishing the 朝鮮日報 to Cynn for a certain sum of money. Mr. 韓基岳 promised Cynn that he would persuade Mr. 崔善益 to give Cynn the right of using the building. Messrs. 韓相龍 and 朴榮喆, two of the shining lights in the pro-Japanese circles of the Koreans, promised Cynn that they would persuade the Industrial Bank to give him the right of using the types and machinery. So Cynn got every right to publish the 朝鮮日報-as far as promised go. Cynn now wants to borrow ¥5,000.00 from me to be paid back in five years. Everybody who knows something of the chaotic history of the paper says one must have at least ¥100,000.00 to rehabilitate it. Here is Cynn who has had no business experience of any kind thinks he can run a ruined paper with a capital of ¥10,000.00. Besides his scheme is based on promises―so many of them that the failure of one would wreck all. I can't afford to put any money in such a shaky affair.
